I rarely use my bike but recently was told that it is the law that a helmet should be worn, ok fair enough on that point, but also that the bike should be registered with a number on the back?

Can anyone confirm /deny this please.

I know the helmet rule is there for mopeds or motorbikes.

You must wear bicycle clips at all times (even when wearing shorts)

Probably true - unless it belongs to a Pakistani gardener or is a government vehicle! Never heard of this myself.

Mr Vince, how lovely to hear from you.

Isn`t a saddle something you put on a horse.

I used to see a guy around Lapta whose bike tyres were strips of cloth wound round the rims.

Never actually saw him riding it though....it was always being pushed!

Matula, the guy with the bike with rags for tyres is sometimes seen pushing it around Alsancak. I also have never seen him riding it.

I have seen him riding it! Down-hill only though, always pushing it up-hill... In the Açmenya road Alsancak.. you have to admire his refusal give-up on the bike, a true 'Turkish Cypriot' never say die spirit... don't see that so much these days apart from all the cars.

This guy is a character in the nicest sense of the word and he lives just down the road from me. He spends most of his day collecting rubbish that everyone else throws out. So his bikes (he has about 3) fit in well with what he does and that is: ......................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

recycling.

He also spends hours on end, in all weathers, knee deep in roadside vegetation, collecting edible plants, then carts a massive, plastic, bagful to a restaurant in Alsancak where they pay him a pittance. He will always repond to a wave or a hello but, unsurprisingly, I have yet to see him smile. I am working on it with cold drinks in the Summers !

Hi Brian

I have attempted to speak to him in Turkish and although I know my Turkish is not 100% I knew that the replies I received were shall we say gibberish as confirmed by one of my CT neighbors that had a bit of a laugh at my attempted conversation with him. To say he is 'away with the fairies' may be an understatement. But he is a character and this world needs characters.
