Been asked today to supply a Poice check by the solicitor for permission to purchase, is this infomaion supplied direct to you from your local police station?

what are the implications if you have a previous history? are there any costs involved? what degree of offences would result in a refusal of PTP? any info much appriciated.

You can apply to the local plod who will give the appropriate form to complete. It costs £10 I think and it is sent off to police HQ for the area you lived in before coming here. It's called a Subject Access Form.

They have 40 days to respond.

Your right to get a print out of your lengthy criminal record is enshrined in the Data Protection Act...

My lengthy criminal record did not prevent my PTP but then it is only Cliff Richard... ;¬)

I hope both Cliff and yourself were over 16 at the time, Grouch.

Actually, how ironic is that? Having to get a police check before settling in the TRNC.

If it's good enough for Australia it's good enough for the TRNC...

I am pretty sure when we did ours we were told about a website to print off the form and send it to the Police in London. I was very surprised when ours came through some weeks later - mine was a thin envelope but my husband's was thicker!!! I got straight on the phone and called him to say I think he may be hiding something from me (LOL!!). Anyway he asked me to open it and yes he did have a criminal record from when he was 19 years old he had an accident in his first car, went and bought another car and transferred the tax disc without thinking and got a parking ticket and the traffic warden reported the error on his tax disc - that's why he now has a criminal record. Got sent to Court - had a £20 fine (at that time!) and thus this came back!!! Anyway I got in touch with our advocate straight away and she said because it was only a minor offence and some 20 years' ago it wouldnt be a problem. Having said that we are still waiting for our PTP's to come through!

Groucho,

I didn't know having a criminal record was still compulsory to get into Australia.

His offence out to have been expunged as a minor offence and should not have turned up I think...

Pike you'll know about the rehabilitation of offenders...

Groucho I think probably the difference is that if "you" ask for your record then you will be provided with all information. If someone else was asking about "you" then maybe the rehabilitation of offenders act would come into force and spent convictions would not be disclosed?

Dixie

I would not worry, I just could not believe that from you previous postings that you would not have criminal record.

Yep, and there are exemptions to the "spent convictions" for certain categories of employment. Before joining the police I had to declare an underage drinking rap from the 1980s. It was a £5 fine.

We bought here in June 2005, came lock stock & barrel in Feb 2006..

As we had no address in the Uk our "Clean letter" which is what our solictor told us we had to obtain, was done through the police station in Girne... Took a bit of time but we got it... Sept 24th our PTP was approved & YESTERDAY got the koçan in our names, albeit for the land only...Next objective to have the house added to the koçan... Took almost 3 years to get off "Builders electric", seem to be getting there...Yavas, yavas

I got the police clean record letter as instructed by first lawyer,

transferred to another lawyer, with whom I left it, as third lawyer

told me I didn't need it, and PTP should be arriving soon.
