Muntader al-Zaidi, the Iraqi journalist who threw his shoes at President Bush, appeared before a judge today in Baghdad and admitted to “the action he carried out.” Reuters reports that “the court decided to keep Zaidi in custody” and that after an investigation is completed, “the court may send him for trial under a clause in the Iraqi penal code that makes it an offense to attempt to murder Iraqi or foreign presidents.” Abdul Satar Birqadr, a spokesman for Iraq’s High Judicial Council said that al-Zaidi faces up to 15 years in prison

No wonder he's apologised for embarrassing the Prime Minister of Iraq...

Whatever the wrongs of Bush, he was a guest of a democratically

elected Prime Minister & that would cause so much embarassment

to his hosts. Now the offendent is cringing & asking for mercy.

America is a very generous country and an outgoing president will

be accorded respect. It is very unArabic to do this kind of thing.

Bush was on TV the next day and didn't seem to have a problem it. But he did urge them not to overreact, because he was not bothered by the incident.

The reason he threw the shoes was because in his society it is a very serious insult. If it wasn't, he wouldn't have done it. If he had wanted to physically hurt GW he could have hurled a camera/dictaphone at him.

Having committed such a serious breach, he must now surely have to pay the price. He obviously thought he could act like an arab in Iraq but be treated like a westerner in the USA.

I have no sympathy for him - which doesn't mean I approve of GW in any way.

15 Years? If that had happened in the UK he would have got a telling off by the local Chief Constable or at worst an ASBO!

For a man who's been beaten up by a pretzel Bush handled the incident very well.

I really do not know what the concern is. If the shoe had hit George W, it couldn't have mentally impaired him as his backside was under the table!

This man truly has been the moron of the century...god help the world with people like this at the helm!

Have no sympathy for Bush but it was embarrassing for the

Iraqis & now this guy doesn't have the guts to take his

punishment for it, as he is wingeing & asking for forgiveness

from the Iraqi president.

Rose,

I think he would have missed, hit somebody else and caused even more of a stink...

As it is I think he did the right thing.. duck.

I was quite surpised that the signal from his optic nerves reached his brain and even more surprised that his brain was able to process the information and send a transmission to the rest of his body to move... quite outstanding for someone who, up to now, had given the impression that the lights were on but nobody was home... ;¬)

He was lucky that it was only shoes and not a bomb. Bush should be on trial for war crimes, he is a disgrace.
