http://articles.boston.com/2012-02-20/news/31080262_1_historic-monastery-turkish-cypriots-restoration

A historic monastery where an apostle of Jesus Christ is said to have performed miracles is close to caving in and needs immediate repairs, the leader of Cyprus’ Orthodox Christian Church said Monday.

Archbishop Chrysostomos II urged Greek Cypriot pilgrims not to travel to the Apostolos Andreas — or Saint Andrew — monastery in the island’s northern breakaway Turkish Cypriot northern sector for fear it could collapse.

He said if Turkish Cypriot authorities didn’t act fast, he would dispatch restoration crews to prop up the monastery’s crumbling central archway, possibly stoking tensions on the divided island.

On a lighter note Alex Salmond might want to add his bit from the Scottish purse to fund their patron saint's church ) ) )

This is old news, perhaps going back several years. In fact the authorities are happy to have the restoration work done, and have even moved the market stalls away from the immediate area to make this easier. But the dear Archbishop keeps finding reasons not to authorise the start of the work. (It's still an active orthodox church, so he does have a say in the matter).

It's all part of his on-going campaign of hatred for anything Turkish and Turkish Cypriot.

@ msg 1, No1Doyen: Thanks for the link, Bill. Renovating this monastery has caused problems for years now between TRNC and RoC and unfortunately Archbishop Chrysostomos II, this fine man of god, is the number one troublemaker.

Renovate it and convert it into a Casino/Nightclub/Brothel and the monies and profits will flow from the Greek Cypriot customers and put an end to their propaganda.

Looks like it would make a lovely house, and so full of character.

Maybe the Bish would pop in for Turkish coffee and some Turkish delight, or would it have to be Cyprus coffee and Cyprus delight?

Such a beautiful historic building. so very saddened that it is being allowed to crumble whatever the reasons.

The building is bigger than all the problems and must be saved for future generations.
