My Mother has Dementia and I have found the Alzheimers web site really helpful, don't know of any information here though I am afraid. Good luck with your search. I know how awful this illness is for family and friends.

Sad to say there is, as I understand it, very little expertise in the TRNC on many of the diseases and illnesses of the elderly, it is something that tends to be swept under the carpet as it were. There are some ex-pats who as Msg.8 states, specialised in this field back in the UK. I do hope you manage to get some help and assistance.

I would recommend the following to read prior to involving pyschiatrists. Caregiver Survival: I Hate Alzeimers by Joseph J Sivak MD. He explains that Alzeimers is the commonest form of dementia and is mainly a discussion on whether it should be classified as a mental illness that should or could be dealt with by pyschiatrists and is better dealt with by specialisets in dementia as a whole. I do hope you find the help and advice required.

A psychiatrist will monitor the level of deterioration over a period of time. Its always important to receive the correct daily care that they do not offer too.

The reality orientation approach is most important in every day care of people with dementia.

spider, you seem to know an awful lot about dementia!

Surely all the links/telephone numbers etc you keep putting up regarding psychiatrists, help etc etc, are enough to make us all think we are suffering from every thing in the 'medical book' !!

Its bringing them back to the hear and now. where they are, what is going to be done. who you are and they family etc. It lowers the anxiety levels. Also good is a visual relaxation DVD.

Dizzy sorry life is not always about your farm and cow's lol. You do not need to read my posting or even comment As you know I have worked many years in this field

Rowan, I do not think that any country in the world is much help to dementia, unfortunately my Mum suffered so badly in the UK of it, and it was a long time diagnosing, and a very trying time for the family, it completely changes a person and hopefully they are really not aware of this fact, I think and I could be wrong that the best help they can have is ignorance to tantrums (they are so ashamed when they realise what they have done) and understanding, my heart goes out to you, and I hope that you can bear with them, and keep remembering that they are the person you love, and they also still love you, xx

Very well put Barbieb. My dear Mother suffered too, its like cancer it a terrible illness.

Its heartbreaking I have worked with people who have suffered this illness from the age of 53yrs old being the youngest I have seen and he was like a man of 80yrs with the very same illness. Bless his wife I remember them both well.

Maria…………I’m sorry to say that your expertise in every aspect of health matters from child psychology, marriage guidance, domestic violence and abuse, drug and alcohol abuse, cognitive behavioural therapy, signing for the deaf, old age mental health, split personality disorder, epilepsy, Alzheimer’s……If I’ve missed anything off then I apologise, or I would if I did not think that you are not an expert in these any of these fields, you may have worked in some capacity in the health service, though perhaps not as an expert as you would lead us to believe. What I would say that most of what you offer on here is from cut & paste or as seen in the past if you do post it as from you, pure plagiarism. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing & when used without such expertise the results can be catastrophic.

continued.

I work with people who if they used the advice you gave I would hate to think of the consequences. This may I add is my opinion, others may disagree, but I felt I must make my feelings know.

I have work in the construction of elderly carehomes . Dementia is a un won battle.

You can only be there for the person unconditionally .

After designing many sensory gardens and got to know these people , i know some days they are ok and other days not

My message to the families affected in my own words

" if today you are not in my mind , you are always in my heart "

Paul I recall talking with you and Jeannie just the once, down at Deniz Kizi beach,Jeannie and I had a swim together, you were out of work at the time, and wanted to do something in the care sector. I did mention that if you worked voluntarily it may help you achieve your goals. Hope it did.

Sorry but I have never worked with children.Except my own and am very proud of how they have turned into loving, confident adults. Even though at times I was busy working all week, even doing evening and night work at the same time Oh what a very busy life it was, back in the old days even working for free

I enjoy linking for no other reason than giving extra informative information.

When you are both over next I would be happy to show you my CV and qualifications. Hope to meet you again in June maybe at the 44 gathering of members.

Dizzy, Paul and yourself are not what I would call friends of mine. I have met you for a moment of time.

Please feel free to email.

Spider..........I have worked in the voluntary sector for 10 years now at my local hospice in their family support unit. At the time you spoke to Jean I was working for the Passport Agency & have not been out of work since I started work in 1974. Perhaps at the time Jean said I was interested in doing a degree in support of my voluntary work? Accept my apologise regarding your working in the child health sector.

Dizzycows, you have added absolutely nothing of any value to anybody in this thread. You have just chosen to pick on Spider for no reason at all. If I was in Rowan's position I would be thankful for any links that others posted. As it is, been there, done that etc my experience with my Mum being very similar to Barbieb. Please do not hijack these threads for your own selfish reasons.

joeandjelly, a lot of us have had to deal with parents or family just like Rowan, the fact being there are to many self appointed experts !!.....

My own selfish reasons as you put it is perhaps concern for the actual person starting the thread to be inundated with emails and links to confuse any one with a worry...
