i agree with you , but do you think a more sinister reason for awarding it to south korea exists ? after all it would allow top brass to enter the south , and maybe take a peek at what the north was upto .

hi rowlo, you are seeing conspiracy where it doesn't exist. Brass can go to Korea anytime they want,

This is just another example of UK ship-building going abroad.

All the big ships built in the last few years, including P&O and Cunard ships have been built in foreign yards.

Our ship building and Merchant Navy have been allowed to go to the dogs.

USA and France build and man their ships - why don't we?

I'm afraid BAe (plus the grip the unions have on wages and working practices) mean that they get priced out - plus unless there's significant profit they won't bother bidding (they have turned down at least 3 minor build / refit projects to my knowledge). They also don't have the build capacity at the moment (stretched with current Type 45 / QE Class builds plus Astute). French and USA governments still heavily subsidise their ship building and pay heavily for it. RFA's are effectively civilian build standard units anyway (not bespoke warship standard) so Korean contract no suprise.

UK yards are too expensive! Are you saying they should get the work whatever price they charge?

Surely not! The Govt would then be accused of not getting value for money.

Twixt a Rock and a Hard place comes to mind.

Tony,I had 2 holidays in the Phillipines last year.I stayed at a 4*hotel in Cebu, owned by South Koreans,at least half the visitors were SK's,the shopping mallnext door, owned by SK's,on a bus journey we passed at least 10 fish farms, yep, owned by SK's.They have even built a Shoe making factory to exploit "cheap labour"

Bob,I was in the Fleet Air Arm,so mainly shore based.Dartmouth, but did sail on Ark Royal and Centaur, when the RN had carriers

What makes me sad is after wacthing the beeb programmes "empire of the seas" " Hearts of Oak" how we were once the premier league naval nation ,to now not being able to build our own ships Samuel Pepys and Francis Drake must be turning in their graves

PS a really good programme
