They were four brothers and two sisters in all but now only the eldest and the youngest is living. Others including my mother died many years ago. He will be 100 tomorrow and we are planning to celebrate it altogether. His brother who normally lives in London is here for the occasion. May we all have the opportunity to celebrate the same in good health as my uncle. Let us hope we have another celebration after ten years. Why not? Last time I saw him he was in good spirits.

Would love to know how he attained this great age Ismet, please do not tell us that he eats well, smokes a pack a day and enjoys his Raki also!

Bet he had a lifetime of hard work and hardly any red meat.

Whatever, I sincerely wish him a very happy birthday and may he have many happy returns. Trust you will all have a lovely time helping him to celebrate!

Elko2,

Would you mind emailing me the travel insurance provider that your uncle used?

I am struggling to get cover for a person this age.

I would be grateful for any help.

Nurse and Sue,

I am not very certain about the recepie for long life but I do know that he spent some time in UK and left his wife behind in Cyprus. In those days the telephones was almost non existent. So may we presume that a lack of wife nagging may be the answer?

Janjin,

I don't think we Cypriots ever bother with voluntary insurance. So he would have no idea but my uncle's daughter is in travel business in London and I hope I have a chance to ask her tomorrow.

My uncle had a relatively easy life. When the American Cyprus Mines Corporation started mining in Cyprus they built a railway from Xero to Lefka to carry the copper ore. My gran dad's field was nationalized for that purpose but he never accepted it. At night time he kept obstructing the rails and was not afraid of any police action. The company offered to give his son an easy job at the mines and it was a deal. He worked in the office keeping records of workers going in and out of the mines. Later he went to London

ctd.

to earn some money and he excelled in dish washing. He worked long hours and spent very little. So he managed to save some money and return to Cyprus. He had a good family life and no unhappy events in the family. His son is now in Cyprus after USA and UK and he proved to be a very good businessman. I admire him for paying great attention to detail and I think his secret to success lies there.

When in UK the tax office taxed my uncle as single because they insisted on proof that he looked after his wife through bank receipts. I appealed to Special Commissioners made up of lawyers and won the case and I had a good tax rebate for him. He did promise me a meal but we never had the time. I think tomorrow will be the day

Ismet bey To him many congratulations and I hope he has an enjoyable time.

however your tale of his life must strike terror into the hearts of many as it shows that both longevity and being an awkward blighter are in your family geenetics!

Harold,

I know that I am an awkward blighter but what makes you think that my uncle is in that class? He is a very nice person and will accept whatever you throw at him.

Happy Birthday to your uncle what a wonderful age 100yrs. I hope he and all your family have a great day of celebration. Back home one would get a card from the palace what do they do here from the government to remember and celebrate all his life. He has seen and done so much I would be delighted to hear some of his stories.

I was also sorry to read of you recent family bereavement but again with the whole family together it will be full of love, laughter and happiness. Sending big congratulations.

We had a fantastic meal and meeting at Aspava Restaurant at Yedidalga by the sea. It was a very moving event with all the close relatives coming together for the first time. About 25-30 relatives flew in from London for the occasion. My younger uncle who is 87 was not told why he came to Cyprus with his family but he was happy to be here. He learned the occasion when he met his older brother at the restaurant. I spent a few years together with my younger uncle in London when I was a student at London University.

I talked with my older uncle about the old days in London in early seventies and believe it or not he remembered things better than I did. BRT TV was there to interview him and his son tried to prompt him on a couple points before the interview. I said "Listen, he has been talking for the last hundred years, he needs no help" As simple as that. There was too much noise and I did not hear a word of what was said. Hopefully he will be on BRT Family channel on Monday 8 pm.
