hwilde, because of your history of spoiling any thread I start you are on a very short list of people who I don't want to join one of my walks. Furthermore the people I meet during walks introduce themselves to each other and don't write anonymous silly posts from behind a keyboard. If you like walking (not) and are interested in history (not), too bad, no walking with me. And not one bit of information either.

The truth, which you are a stranger to, is that you are trading without a work or business permit and so you dare not say what your walks cost.

Woodspeckie mentioned that no charge was made when going on a walk with DC and on his site it mentions the word "free".

If all DC is doing is inviting people to walk with him and he can explain the History of Northern Cyprus whilst walking, that he is ensuring, that as far as possible what is presented as fact is accurate, that a clear distinction is made between fact or opinions and that everyone is aware of their own Health & Safety, in which case they should make sure their own Health Insurance is up-to-date, then one can only assume he would not have been invited to the Cocktail Party for Tourism Guides if there was a problem.

'2 thing 1st AJ you are not a mod anymore

Phil, first of all I despise personal vendettas on 44 especially when no evidence is provided to support accusations. And thus I will do whatever I can do to stop these situations from happening. These sort of postings are morally wrong or do you not think so?

If you think I am 'bullying' then so be it. But we all know that you have no morals, at least if you have then you have not shown any so far.

I would not go on one of these walks because I guess Han's would not allow me But I would not bother to ask ! I could even follow behind him with his little red flag and hid from time to time I must say that he does do a lot for the tourist's here. Even though is walks are not free. I have no idea how much they are either. But for people who like this sort of thing its all good that at least we have something and someone who knows a little of these historical buildings.

Maybe soon he might be able to get invited to this event next April and even receive an award. I was invited with the KLD. For all the free time they give to the tourists and charities over here. Well done the KLD.and we were all sorry not to see Han's invited to collect his trophy.

http://postimage.org/image/yfxkymo3b/

Well done to the liners and good luck Han's that you to might be picking yours up soon.I think the KLD are a little shy to show their great achievement so I have posted it.

If people dislike or distrust DC that is their choice, if they don't want to go on his walks, again that's their choice, but there are people who do enjoy the walks and DC is providing information for them.

To those who just join in the posts to have a go at DC why don't you butt out and stop spoiling it for others, it gets very boring.

PERSONAL OPINIONS OF HANS DON'T MATTER! Opinions of his walks that he is offering do matter. I have been on one of his walks and it was informative and FREE. If you wish , you may buy a map etc, but that is a choice, and don't forget that they cost money for Hans to produce, so what is wrong in giving him the costs back!

The accusations of his illegality etc, etc are unwarranted and unkind. The guy is offering a service which people may or may not choose to take up. Personally I think they are a terrific freebie for anyone who knows little of the history of the island and can learn a lot from Hans.

as I say, whether you like the guy or not it totally irrelevant. You are taking a commodity from him namely knowledge of the island. definitely a bargain.

@ msg 30, Minertor: (...) Wife bought a cd and a map that I thought were dear (...)

▶ Tony, for your personal information. A map of Kyrenia, Nicosia, Famagusta, Slamis etc., is FREE to use during a walk.

(My only question: "Please, don't bend the map and keep the map tidy if you are going to return the map.")

Only one out of ten participants during a walk buy/keep the map.

Because they like the map or they leave the map in their villa for future guests to use.

I charge 5 (five!) Turkish Lira for a laminated, regularly updated map.

A printed map costs me 1 TL in Girne.

I or my wife drive 2x 12 km to and from Girne (2x 1 litre of petrol), waiting for the prints for one or two hours.

At home we laminate the map: 1 TL per laminate sheet.

We put the laminated map in a plastic cover: 1 TL.

I won't bother you with all the details about the equipment I need to design maps. Did you notice that the latest Adobe CS 5 suite I has this price tag: 1500 Euros?

Msg 38 (continued).

Forget the rest of the software I need and buy (for 20 years I have NO illegal software on my Macintoshes). Forget all the money I spend on Macintoshes and peripherals. Any idea how much you pay for dual-core new Mac able to run Lion and Mountain Lion software?

When I have to drive to Famagusta to conduct a walk - my petrol is free of course. Yeah.

Five Turkish Lira for a nicely printed, laminated map.

Too "dear", eh, Tony?

Why do people insist on commenting on DC's threads when they just want to try and discredit him? He is offering a FREE service to people who are interested in the history of Cyprus. If you are not interested... don't read his threads. Simple. Leave it to those who are interested

Whenever I look at this site it seems to be the same people 'having a go' all the time. Just give it a rest.

As someone has already said...it is boring.

I wasn't "having a go" at anybody. I was merely expressing an opinion. My wife bought the map, 10tl Hans, not 5tl and cd, 25tl for the 2, and was quite happy with them. I laminated the map myself, it was in a loose film bag when we were loaned it.

You don't need to explain anything to me, I would quite happily have paid the 25tl for the walk. One of your better ideas.

ok PB, it was a donation. The cd and map were free. I have the cd in front of me. CD Nr. 11 15ytl

"A lecture by Hans Doeleman for the Medieval Cyprus Fellowship"

It contains 150+ photographs. Well worth the 15ytl donation but there is no dialogue. It does say below "ILLUSTATED TEXT OF THE READING WITH ALL MAPS, DRAWINGS AND PHOTOS"

I suppose the two were worth the 25tl donation. At the time my wife was disappointed that there was no lecture.

Cont; yes Hans, the map is laminated and must have been when my wife bought it. It is inside the sleeve from a ring binder. Which is why I was going to do it myself. The price on the accompanying info sheet says:

"MAP ONLY: 10TL. CD ONLY: 15TL. SPECIAL OFFER: CD AND MAP: 20TL"

Guess my wife owes me 5tl.

T

ps I charge 5 (five!) Turkish Lira for a laminated, regularly updated map.

Hans, the map states "Kyrenia around the year 1300" Where do the regular updates come from.

pps Hans, do me a favour, don't reply. I take back all I said about "too dear" I'll have another to compare the changes. I have no wish to become embroiled in another slanging match. My ban (conditionally lifted) doesn't end until May 2021. I wish you well with your helpful endeavors.

Message 42.

Minertor. I really didn't mean you. I just get fed up of coming onto the site and the same people seem to be squabbling amongst themselves or trying to pick a fight with other people.

A small minority of people use it as a site for their personal vendettas. It's easy to tell who doesn't like who. Some people make it their mission to leave negative messages on every single thread DC starts. I like to look at DC's posts as they are informative and helpful but then have to read all the rubbish where people write horrible personal remarks. It is always the same people.

▶ Sorry, Tony, I must answer you! First the CD: you obviously got a faulty CD. There SHOULD be pictures AND text on the CD. I'm sorry that this is not the case on your CD. Here are solutions I can think of now: I can return your money, I can make a new CD (on my new LaCie CD/DVD writer for Macintosh: 130 Euros...) or I'll make the complete CD #11 PLUS another free and illustrated lecture of your choice available for downloading (If you choose this option I'll mail you the download link). I hope, Tony, you find this satisfying?

Now for the map you bought: the first maps I had printed were more expensive (10 TL) than later maps, when I went to Magic Touch in Kyrenia. As I stated above: Magic Touch makes good quality prints on reasonable paper for 1 TL.

Updates of maps I use and provide for free use during walks. In Minertor's case: Kyrenia (if I'm not mistaken). The "Kyrenia 1300" map has been updated at least nine times with major or minor additions, since the first version. I've added some monuments and updated the city lay-out. The Kyrenia Castle can now be printed and shown according to the Lusignan situation (around 1300) and/or after the Venetian alterations (around 1550).

I'm always pleased when people show an interest in the art of map designing/making. So, Tony, don't hesitate to mail me with more questions or write them here...

Several times, mainly after a Kyrenia Walk, when we end the walk near the terrace at the ancient Roman harbour, East of the castle - I have accepted a free beer!

This must be another terrible shock for you and your high morals.
