Does anyone living in the North go fishing?

I know someone just retired out there with all the gear, but needs the advice of someone who knows where to go and what to do.

Thanks

Hi James

I take it you are talking about sea fishing or is it maybe coarse fishing?

Sea fishing is reasonably easy from the shore line and although fish are scarce there are certain times when you can have some good sport, there are some nice skate to be had and the locals do not fish for them as a rule, not being a coarse fisher I cant give much advice except to say that some friends went to a couple of the reservoirs/ponds but the fish were very small or so they say.

Yes, thisledonicely, I imagined it would be sea fishing from shore, does anyone know anyone that does this as a hobby, maybe he could tag along with?

Thank again.

Mr B has tried to fish from the shore all along the coast, and says it's too rocky and keeps 'losing his gear' Says he needs to buy a boat! He did catch a couple of decent fish off the beach that we know as Akdeniz beach (its a public beach, with no facilities so take everything you need) He caught something that looked like a cross between a stingray and a skate - when he has described it to locals they say they call it electric fish, and it does have a sting in its tail! He has caught a couple from the Top Set Hotel at Karaganalou

Lots of locals fish around the harbour (before the sewqage leak!) but this seems more about passing time than actually catching anything!

Hi

the only fresh water fly fishing I know of is in the Troodos on the other side, there is a fish farm breeding Rainbows who allow you to fish for a bag of four fish which you then have to pay for as well as paying for the privelege of catching them,

there are many places to use a beachcaster off the coast, and now is the time to be out in a boat as there is good sport to be had with Tuna and tunny among others

There is nothing in the North worth catching in the lakes. There are several good dams and lakes in the south which have for example tench trout carp perch bream zander etc. Type in fishing in Cyprus and you will get all the info you need. At the moment it is not that good due to a water shortage this year and some dams are closed for fishing but there are still several open near Nicosia.

With regard to it being to rocky of the shore, if it is anything like the UK, thats where the best fishing will be, best way to get over the lost of tackle is to use an expendable weight on a weak link, so if you do get caught up you can break of the weight but retain your trace, i used to work in a garage and collected all the old sparkplugs to use, i am sure there are a lot of other things you could use.

Tutor4u & jamesb,

Not moving out until next year some time (1st half hopefully) but would be interested in club, I think it could be really interesting searching out good fishing sites etc, not to mention finding a good bar for the club meetings and discussions.
