I suppose one might also wonder why their colleges can't "teach" them, rather than "learn" them

Cuba has one of the finest medical research institutes in the world, research facilities the likes of I have never seen before or since.

But for all this the poverty is horrendous, only rich or dirt poor in this country no in between.

So if people try to escape to a better life for them and their families it is understandable. The people we met were proud, would only beg for soap to wash their kids or pencils and paper for the kids to take to school, they would not accept money! Havana itself was an eye opener with school girls openly prostituting themselves to tourists!

It may have changed since we were there in 96 but that was the way it was then.

Yes, Chris, when we were there in '97, one young boy asked my husband if he wanted to go with his sister!!! While I was actually stood at the side of him!!! ( He said no lol!!)

But we had taken pens for the local kids after reading they liked to get them, they were so grateful for such a small gift shouting 'thank you' as the coach left Havana to take us back to the resort.

There were actually lawyers and doctors working in the hotels as they could earn more from the holidaymakers than their actual wages.

As for healthcare, we were advised to take a medical kit with us as supplies were scarce.

Its probably changed, hopefully, since then.
