i am one of those people who have just lost bbc1 and 2 as a result of the bbc rather selfishly moving to a new satellite. it appears that this is a permanent situation and even though i have a 4.2 metre dish (which my neighbours hate) i can now only get the same channels as i had a couple of years ago with a 1.8 metre offset dish. whilst in the UK recently i bought Apple TV (not sure why) but have not yet set it up. i also believe that BBCiPlayer works here as long as you have your IP address masked and routed through a UK proxy server, however i rang Extend today and they say this is impossible. if i dont get Upstairs Downstairs soon my wife has threatened to annul our 2-year old marriage, cut off certain parts of my appendages and spike my tea with LSD. although the latter may be interesting i could really do with some help........either with Apple TV (do i need to fool them with a bogus IP address?) or how do i get BBCiPlayer?

Hi rickheff

The most common means of getting access to bbc iplayer (and other UK online tv services) is to use a VPN (virtual private network). Using such will make it appear to most UK TV internet services that you are within the UK. Some ISP's here like the one that I work for, multimax, are providing such VPN services are part of their standard package. If your ISP does not offer such then there are both 'ad sponsored' VPN services and pay for VPN services. An example of a paid for VPN service would be vpnuk.info though there are many suppliers.

I have not played around with apple TV specificaly but the content on it will be region specific. Getting this device to work 'through' a VPN will be harder than getting a PC / Laptop to work with one, where you can configure the VPN directly on the PC itself, but not impossible.

I would also say that any net based TV will not be the 'same' as broadcast system and expecting it to be will lead to disapointment.

go to:

http://www.my-private-network.co.uk

£5 a month for VPN, you can then use the net to access BBC iplayer, ITV player, 4OD, etc

Having lived overseas for over 35 years...initially in places that only had local/national African channels, I can assure you that life without BBC1 & 2 does exist..and can be very enjoyable.

hi erolz. it seems that the best way forward is to sign up to multimax and their 10Mbit download speed. i have an account with extend up to end of august 2012 - do you know if i could get a refund from them?

again i am unsure what gets affected if i change to a new IP address - will it affect anything that i have already set up?

do you know how soon multimax can get installed in upper kyrenia?

Rick, as you know, you are a customer of ours with the ADMC Barclays Premier League and the JSC card. We also do VPN's to enable you to watch UK TV. I am also an agent for eXtend and you can watch UK TV through their system but you need a VPN. We charge £5 per month for one or £50 for the year. Gwyn 0533 869 4371

Re Msg 4: Yes, so you just switch the VPN on when you want to access BBC or ITV etc iplayers.

The MPN (VPN) shortcut will be on your screen of course.

I would highly recommend My Private Network (message 3). They give an excellent service and, if you have any problems with the BBC iPlayer, they will assist. We had a quite complex problem with ours recently which took them quite some time to resolve but, they never give up however long it takes.

For FREE UK TV channels, without having a VPN, go to:

Interesting link Geoff and for now seem to work pretty well on the free channels I have tried. Filmon have a long history of battles with broadcasters both in the US and in the UK about them using the broadcasters content without their permission. Seems like a good resource for now, not sure how long it will last in that form but thanks for the link.

Rumour has it, the latest 6m dish will be available soon to give BBC 1, 2, 3 & 4 along with all the ITV channels and Sky 1

No need to ask your neighbour about installing the dish, all that is required is an "I'm alright Jack" attituude !

Please let me know if anyone wants any updates of "soap" or "costume Dramas ?" missed due to the BBC's rather selfish moving to a new satellite.

Thanks to the forum I was able to get the sports for last weekend.

I also set up the filmon which works with occasional buffering on the laptop but when attached to the TV the vision is fine but no sound. Is this likely to be a cabling problem or something more fundamental?.

I also have a SKY package. Can the UK terrestıial channels be received through it?

Any info. appreciated.

Which SKY package do you have Ian, and does it include HD?

If it includes HD, and you have an HD receiver, you can get ITV2 HD, ITV3 HD, and ITV4 HD.

You can also get ITV1 and All the Channel 4 group (More4, E4 etc), and channel 5HD.

The ITV1 and Ch4 group you get as "added on" channels (other channels).

Thanks Geoff, The package is Sky World although not HD. I have no problem with ITV1 although Channel 4 has disappeared.

OK Ian,

For Ch4 go to Add Channels and key in:

12480, V, 27500, 2/3

For other ITV1 regions:

12402, V, 27500, 2/3

As you don't have HD you cannot get Ch5, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4
