My friend had a burglar last night they were are home watching the tv and he sneaked in throught the unlocked ktchen door and took her hand bag containing money. Her husband heard a noise and gave chase but lost him. The police said they can do nothing. It was in upper Catalkoy behind the Sirinli holiday village. The road is a dead end and not many people know there are a few houses there so i think he must be local. So watch out!!

I never sit outdoors with the doors unlocked unless I am sat outside said door.

At this time of year, as soon as we come indoors (evenings) the logs are got in for the night and then we lock up. Our Cypriot and Turkish neighbours are also careful about locking up and the elderly ones lock the door even in the daytime when they are in.

So sad, when we first came here we never locked the doors, often just went to bed and forgot to lock up.

Not any more though. My house is very secure but having said that, I still take my bag upstairs with me when I go to bed.

Very sorry this has happened to you.

Update another three houses in the same road were "done" on Weds night. Police say he only seems interested in money or jewellery.Tell him not to bother coming to my house then i have neither. The police thought that was funny.

There's been a couple of 'young men' (older than kids anyway!) riding around the streets at the back of the Serinli the past couple of afternoons, on these big 'off road' motorbike things. They've been causing a nuisance (to me anyway!) because of all the racket they've been making. They are new faces and although I don't like to start sounding like I'm throwing accusations (they may be quite innocent) it doesn't harm to warn people to be vigilant of any new faces they see knocking around.

Sorry to hear about your friend, but thanks for the warning

We all have to help each other. The worst thing was he was brave enough to enter when the house was occupied. He was looking through a small gap in the curtains as an empty crisp packet and coke can were found under the window. Also they have 2 small children it has really upset her.

I think it is worth mentioning the youths on the quads to police, they won't be hard to track down.Leaving coke can and crisps packet smells of kids to me. What about possibility of prints from coke can. I always thought the police nearly always get thier man over there.

re msg.1.

The same thing happened to neighbours nearby in Catalkoy, some years ago. They blamed building workers who were next door at the time & would have known the layout of the house. They were upstairs at night watching TV in their lounge. The intruder entered their kitchen through an unlocked patio door & stole a wallet left on the work surface. Sounds exactly the same to me as you describe. These were new TL notes & more than usual. The Police took details, but the burgler was never caught. He was taking a big chance because he could so easily have been caught in the act, even if he was quick & not in their kitchen for long.

We always keep our doors locked if we are not in the same room.

If the perpertrator took just money and jewellery, if they try to off load the jewellery in Girne the shop owners are quick to report such activity to Police so maybe they will be caught. Let us hope so.

The door was unlocked because the cat had just been let out and normally comes straight back in surely we are human and dont always remember to lock the door! The police said there was no point taking fingerprints from the door as other peoples would be on it have they not heard of elimination? they said they could not lift prints from the coke can it has to be a flat surface, blks

Deniz1

What the police said about not being able to lift prints from coke can is absolute tosh, my hubby was a scene of crimes officer for many years and took evidence from many drinking vessels. Sounds like a case of 'Can't be bothered to me'

Deniz, just a thought, sparked by Mindy's comments, if any gold items were taken, can you describe what they were - either on here or drop me an e-mail (cyprusjules@yahoo.com ). Just in case anything should turn up at the markets or someone gets in touch with me, I can watch out for it and alert the police/you.

Maybe worth a visit to the Jewellery shops in Girne to see if the jewellery is up for sale. The owner might be able to give clues of the seller. Worth a try.

It has been a long time now, but it's about time I brought my bazooka out of retirement and address these current, disturbing matters to a final conclusion!
