Dependant upon where the cracks are running from and to, I would consider seeking the advice of a Structural Engineer in the first instance!

no don't need a structural engineer they are just the normal Cypriot cracks and if I knew what to treat them with would do them myself - any suggestions

I wonder what sort of a job he will make of your cracks if I tell him that you said I was Crap singer.

Actually he will proabably agree with you l.o.l.

@Message 3; The difficulty about advice on such an issue on an internet forum is understanding the problem in it’s entirety, and whatever advice you do receive, should be appropriate for the root cause of the problem, whatever that is, ‘normal Cypriot cracks’ isn’t a cause I’m familiar with The permanent remedy may involve a lot more work than most people anticipate! On the other hand if your requirement is purely short term and for cosmetic purposes, the procedures would be entirely different, I invested in the Readers Digest DIY Manual back in the early ‘80’s, I found this particular manual, written/edited by construction industry professionals to be invaluable for day-to-day maintenance issues in domestic premises, if you are serious about Doing it Yourself, I personally couldn’t advise you any better than this particular publication.

Top Ten

1)first you need to chizzel out the cracks to make them bigger.

2) mix up a solution of 1/7 of pva and water and paint it in the crack to seal it.

3) go to izzy aka sparks d.i.y store in karsiyaka and get a product called CRATEX to fill the cracks with and fill them-let them dry sand down and re fill if needed.

4) finally mix up solution of pva and water again same 1/7 ratio and paint over the top of the finished filled crack.

5) finally paint two coats of the villas colour i assume white over top.

Job Done i hope this helps.

The major problem is expansion and contraction of masonry...The Villas here are built without Expansion joints of any kind ..with a temperature differential of 50 degrees masonry must be allowed to move/expand and contract...The render is also incorrect for the weather conditions, it contains no waterproofing agent, and is applied to hot dry walls/base masonry ,therefore correct bonding does not take place..All in all the building techniques are way behind the times, and a quick dodge up is about as good as it gets..Built properly there would be no problems, built cheaply, well, you get what you pay for..

Hi. I am the Painter & Decorator currently re-painting Turtle Bay Village.

If it is just hair line cracks that are appearing every year there is a good product available from Genc DIY called exterior putty that comes in a tub ready to use. It is easy to use either with a paint brush or filling blade. Just wait for it to dry,rub down and then re-paint. EASY.

It can be used for bigger cracks but these may need digging out and filling, again no problem and is easy to do.

Hope this helps

If these cracks are an eyesore, then by all means fill them. But Martin message 9 is correct, its all about expansion and contraction. As soon as it gets hot, the cracks will come back.

As your home was built on or adjacent to a bamboo bog it might be prudent for peace of mind to follow the advice above of Dillon first if you have not already done so.

mcity - this exterior putty - is there an equivalent for indoors? İ have an old stone-built house and suffer cracks each year in and out doors!

thank you

Our propereties are built on an island that is susceptible to movement so cracks will arise , such as hairline that are to be expected, if they get to a point where you can see daylight through or they between 4 & 6mm then you will need a structural engineer to check.

Hope this is helpful to all.

msg14."our properties are built on an Island that is susceptible to movement"

That Smity, and the temp differentials is precisely why they should be built "With" Movement/Expansion joints.. ..

When the mentality of so many so called 'builders' is 'Dump it and run!', shoddily and hastily erected 'concrete tents' are the result!
