Today, prime minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer has annouced that, from now on meat and milk and their byproducts will not allowed to pass from south part of the island to north.

There will be tight control at check points. He was noted saying the same procedure is applying in the GC check points so we have to do same thing.

He calls to Turkish Cypriots to understand the sutiation and follow the rules.

and not before time either, too many brits buy all foodstuffs from the south, which IMO is disgraceful, if you live in the north buy from the north, support the economy, after all we all get good interest rates on our money so we should plough that back into the economy here, I shop at Supreme 7 days a week and am proud of it.

I have only gone south for a few items of clothing and xmas decorations and the odd pack of lurpak lol, which I will have to forego now, a small price to pay.

Here we go again, more new laws. If only they had quality stuff and were competitively priced in the North people would not be forced to shop in the South.

Watch all the prices shoot up now.

Captive audience.

SO glad I dont live there, but it still pisses me off to read about stunts like this.

Very bad timing.

re: mess 11 - Dee,

Just a thought - why not go to Supreme once a week, rather than 7 times a week and buy a trolly full - you'll reduce your carbon foot print and save a bomb on petrol !

Can you just imagine the response if the Irish government told its population not to shop in Northern Ireland. How long will this little excersie last I wonder, just after the New Year!

i am sure people don't enjoy going to the south to buy products but so many products are missing or are out of prices - they had the opportunity to compare and of course they buy -

This decision of the government might look innocent & reasonable at first glance but when you think of it, it means they will start detailed searches of vehicles, hence slowing the crossings..

In my opinion, they do not want people to shop in the south at all and want to put a stop to this, but due to the Green Line Regulations they cannot do this, so they will try to make life as unpleasant as possible to people at checkpoints by making them waiting in long queues.

Has this gov not heard of carrot and stick? It seems only to understand the stick. It recognizes that shopping in the North does not provide what people want, so instead of doing something about it, i.e. price controls and/or subsidies, it just makes it Obsons Choice.

perfect timing wonder if they will stop the gamblers coming this side to give the casinos thier cash. i thought it all equated out they gamble we shop. happy xmas to those who make up the laws. Whilst i agree in principle it would be great to keep the money here but grossly inflated prices, lack of products etc it does make life difficult. I bought a pie which was an Iceland pie price sticker 69 pence what did i pay 8yt. lWhy cant they bring down the import taxes and let us deal with other suppliers. Even the supermarkets here get some products from the south as does to restaurants so we can give a variety of choice, how many more will e leaving soon. x

I think this Government needs to get a very firm grip on its self!! This is almost starting to sound like the former USSR. What you can buy where you can go, who you can associate with. Were will it all end, very messy I belive. We are all reconised here as EU citizens by the EU, only the government is not reconised.

This goes a long way to getting world reconision for TRNC what a load of T+++ers.

I will have to be very carefull when I next put my thinking cap on, some one may be listening!!!

The very thing which is bitterly resented in this country is the Embargo. Freedom to travel and trade with whoever, wherever, whenever is what this country rightly deserves. However, it doesn't seem to see that it should apply at home as well as abroad. As a tit-for-tat measure, this is cutting-off ones nose to spite ones face.

It's a shame, as it doesn't set a very good example.

Could you please remind the Irish Finance Minister- Brian Lenihan - of that! ;)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/northern_ireland/7794882.stm

"Irish Finance Minister Brian Lenihan recently rebuked the cross-border bargain-hunters.

He said: "When you shop in Northern Ireland, you're paying Her Majesty's taxes, you're not paying taxes to the state that you live in."

It was a blunt appeal for patriotic shopping."

SOYER ANNOUNCE NEW MEASURES AGAINST SHOPPING IN SOUTH CYPRUS

TRNC government has announced new measures against shopping in South Cyprus.

The government banned meat and dairy products to be brought from South Cyprus.

This was announced by Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer yesterday.

Reminding the announcement by the Greek Cypriot Minister of Agriculture that meat and dairy products were banned to be brought from the TRNC, Mr Soyer said it’s been seen that the Greek Cypriot authorities have launched a dissuasive and boring application at the crossing points in the south by using the meat and dairy products as an excuse.

Noting that in this respect, the TRNC government has decided to intensify the inspections at the crossing points, the Premier said products costing 135 Euro in total will be allowed.

Mr Soyer called on the people to pay attention to the issue.

However

President Mehmet Ali Talat has said that the Cyprus problem should be solved in 2009.

Mr. Tal

Mr. Talat responded to journalists’ questions following his meeting with the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias yesterday.

“Our aim is to solve the Cyprus problem in 2009. The aim was to solve the problem in 2008 but we transferred this aim to 2009. The time is passing rapidly and we should absolutely solve the problem in 2009” the president said.

Stating that the issues to be taken up at the negotiations in January were also determined, Mr. Talat said they are aiming to complete the discussions on governance and power sharing in January and to start discussing another subject.

Meanwhile, at the end of their meeting yesterday, President Talat and Greek Cypriot Leader Christofias have reaffirmed their strong commitment to find a comprehensive settlement.

Mr Talat and Mr Christofias voiced the commitment in a joint statement read out by the UN Special Envoy Alexander Downer.

`Looking back to our efforts since March 2008, we recognize that we still need to consider a

a long list of chapters. We also assess that although some progress has been made, it has been insufficient`, the two leaders said.

But, they gave the assurance that they were resolved to do all in their power to reach a settlement as soon as possible.

The leaders also thanked the United Nations for their contribution to their efforts.

`With this in mind, we would like 2009 to bring peace and prosperity to Cyprus, our common homeland, as well as the whole world`, the statement concluded.

So as usual and inept and childish tit for tat gesture by a Mickey Mouse representative who seems to forget his boss is engaged in peace talks with the other side.

Never mind a bold move stating that whatever the RoC did, the TRNC would decide on a case by case basis acting in the best interests of its citizens. That's too much hassle and involves statesmanship which is too much effort when you can thumb your nose as you've been doing for decades. Pathetic yet utterly predictable.

without competition retailers are given carte blanche to do whatever they wish and from my dealings on this side they will not stop until maybe all the family are driving Range Rovers!

please think about that next time you drive happily to Supreme or any store.

In which case it really does look like tit for tat. I hope nobody like the idiot Soyer is involved in the peace talks, but from past experience this is almost a certainty. This was an opportunity to get one over on the RoC and show some diplomacy and statesmanship. But third-rate politicians don't care about their own people - just pathetic banana republic gestures that have kept the Turkish Cypriots in an isolated backwater.

Charlie 15; The Black night crossing in Famagusta was permanently open as it is on the sovereign base area. You had to go to Ledra and get a one day or monthly visa to get across.

I was a member of Dhekalia JSGC golf club at the time and went over many times a month.
