This has probably been covered before but I couldn't find it. Can a car hired in the North be taken across the border to the South subject to paying the insurance and if so what is the cost of the insurance for a day?

Certain hire companies will allow their vehicles across the line (though by no means all). You will need to ask them. Insurance will cost you €25, as the minimum is a month.
