everytime i tune my car radio into byrak and drive in the alsancak/escape beach area it keeps changing to ADA radio so eventually i gave up thinking it was my car stereo, then it happene in 2 rentals cars and yesterday in my mates brand new car just as we ent past ADA hotel.

has this happened to anyone else??

Byrak can you put out a stronger signal or do something, or ill carry on listening to fog radio.

while on on the byrak subject, cant you play music suitable for the average expat age rather than for teenages at a rave because they dont listen anyway

Hi Graham,

Bayrak transmits on various frequencies, so it may be worth re-tuning:

Bayrak Radyo 1 - 90.6 & 102.0 MHz

Bayrak FM - 98.1, 92.1 & 94.2 MHz

Bayrak International - 87.8 & 105.0 MHz

Bayrak Klasik - 93.4, 88.4 & 102.5 MHz

Bayrak Turk Musik - 94.6 MHz only - but I presume you're not listening to that racket - Joke! Joke! - Honest!

Graham,

Do let me know how you get on - The Bayrak International transmitter at Seviltepe only puts out 5KW of power on 105.0 MHz, while the one at Kantara is double the power at 10KW on 87.8 MHz - of course it's a lot farther away...

Anyway, keep me posted please...

You are not missing much by not receiving Bayrak. It is about time they got their backsides into gear. I am not really quite sure (and I don't think they know) who they think their target audience is.

Hans,

I'm not sure of the answer to your question, as I don't know the names of the programmes transmitted from Yesiltepe.

There are another 29 Stations listed in addition to the ones I mentioned previously.

I've scanned the relevant page of WRTH 2012, and parked it here: -

http://yorkie.host56.com/images/TRNC%20Radio%20Transmitter%20frequencies.jpg

Now you know as much as I do

Well - more really, 'cos there's all that stuff that you already knew as well...

It's quite a large jpeg, - I didn't want to compress it too much as it's tiny print - if you find it difficult to read, you can borrow the book

If you find it difficult to comprehend - join the club

yenibob,

I'm with you on this - I've got an old laptop whose sole task is to stream Radio 4.

I've hooked the headphone output up to a 'cheapo', low power FM transmitter (the sort that you can buy to listen to your 'iPod' on the car radio) so that it broadcasts Radio 4 around the house, which is really good as I can listen on any radio in any room.

Hans, msg 9,

I think that we're back to my response in msg 4: -

The Bayrak International transmitter at Seviltepe only puts out 5KW of power on 105.0 MHz, while the one at Kantara is double the power at 10KW on 87.8 MHz - of course it's a lot farther away...

It's worth mentioning that Bayrak International claim to broadcast (24Hrs) in Greek/English/Arabic & German

They do broadcast on the Medium waveband as well, on 1098 kHz from Iskele, using 2 x 50KW !!! transmitters - though that is listed as Turkish language - I've never listened to it, so I can't confirm

Of course if you've got a shortwave radio, you've got other options ('though not Bayrak)

I must confess that I find the internet to be the easy option these days, though it will be sad to see AM transmissions cease, they've served us well since Guglielmo Marconi set up shop

yenibob,

that looks amazing - and a damned site cheaper and easier than dedicating a load of other kit to the job (unless you have it already - please don't look in my shed )

Thanks for that!

Message 15 RadioAngel sorry but agree with message 5 as whenever I listen to Bayrack some awful stuff is playing, which I think, although dont know for sure, would sound more at home in a nightclub. I expect this is the result of no real audience survey figures being available as to target audience and just points towards DJ preferences. Its hardly ideal and think there would be heads rolling if they had survey figures available especially as they claim to target the "expat" audience. I am sure you have been to the majority of ex pat bars etc considering your time here am surprised you have not brought this to their attention ? Its just bloody awful and cant imagine ANY expats listening to it at all sorry.

I think that the reading of articles from magazines (sometimes very badly) should be banned and some of the presenters need to perfect their English before being allowed on a radio staion geared to expats. As to the music, mmmm, sometimes I have to mute it, I can't bear the rap style stuff they play - a lot.

'presenters need to perfect their English before being allowed on a radio staion geared to expats.'

But that is the problem. They are not sure of who their target audience is or who they need to be targeting. They need a major shake up and they need to do some research about who their intended audience needs to be and what that intended audience want from their transmissions.

westender,

I have every sympathy with your sentiments - I often feel that although the pronunciation is usually fine, the rhythm & inflexion are frequently 'Off'.

Also, I think that they may be reading 'literal transcripts' of Turkish language articles - the repetitive use of full names and titles is an indicator - so that even tho' they get the Grammar sorted out reasonably well, it still doesn't come sounding 'normal' to a native English speaker - to me, it sounds rather stilted and quaint.

But! - it does remind me that I'm not in England, that I am actually in a Foreign Country, and that the inhabitants are, at least, making some sort of effort to accommodate my deficiencies re. their language. And make as to mistake in my message - it is OUR deficiency, not theirs.

I have no doubt that the quality of English Language Broadcasting in TRNC will improve, & I congratulate all involved for their efforts, but did we come here to live in 'Little England'?

I didn't!

I'm sorry for the spelling, grammatical and syntactical errors in the last post - if I were an MP I would claim to be 'Tired and Emotional'

As it is, I'm going to bed...

In light of the remarks about the quality of presenters on Bayrak radio you may want to ask around as I have heard that there are several national and international quality British presenters and even a station manager now residing in TRNC.

Hi GinaC I note your comments the comments ...However I am but a lowly worker at BRT not the hirer and firer ! But I do know that all input is most gratefully received.

Why not email your comments ( all posters ) to bayrakinterbrt2@yahoo.com ?

This will get to the people at the top who need to know the expats thoughts on the radio transmission.

Thanks

Yes have to agree with a lot of others on here about the choice of music being played. Find it quite hard being eased into the start of the day while listening to rap and rave music !!

There are 2 ex-pats that present shows on Bayrak International, Mike Schofield presents his Juke Box Show every Sunday morning at 10am, and I present the Soul Train on Saturday's at 10am.

However, we are not allowed to broadcast 'live' on air, so all shows are pre-recorded.

Why do the shows have to be prerecorded, live radio is much better if the presenters are up to it ?

I will speak to those mentioned to see if any of them are interested in carrying on in their profession as I think most expats may appreciate it rather than automation and amateurs.

As Cyprusgiant / Max pointed out, both he and Mike Schofield present very professional pre-recorded music progs on Bayrak Radio. I have been told by Can Gazi that non-Cypriots are not allowed to broadcast live on Bayrak, and I can personally vouch that the content of any pre-recorded programme is subject to extremely stringent editing on behalf of Bayrak Radio's political masters. Given that information, Bayrak is best left to its own devices...............

Hi GinaC To be employed at BRT you need to have Turkish Cypriot citizenship and as such we are the voice of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

Bayrak International radio is just one English language transmission. We have many other channels all broadcasting in Turkish. We also transmit in Arabic, Greek and German.

Max and Mike are not employed by BRT just provide their programmes for free for two hour long slots a week which is why they are pre recorded.

Are interviews with non Cypriot Turks recorded or are they allowed to go out live and if they are 'live' is there any time lag?

Hi AJ

I and my colleagues do both live and prerecorded iinterviews with both Turkish Cypriots and any other nationality, as long as they speak English ! We have no delay button on live transmission.
