I read today on BRT, that the CTP party is going to call an early election in 2009 not the planned 2010.

Presumably the TRNC election will now take place before any Cyprus settlement. Why would they do that?

There is a good chance that they could lose to the UBP, and that would likely mean, that the UBP, would look to renegotiate any settlement terms that would have been agreed up until that point.

Perhaps it is to put pressure on the GC's to negotiate quickly in the peace process?

Mark

The UBP are the party of choice for the majority of TC's at the moment and I think for the CTP an early election may be a damage limitation exercise. The UBP are certainly more hardline than CTP and certainly not the party that the GC's want to see in power in the North and the UBP may have a better understanding/alliance with mainland Turkey. If the UBP came into power I for one would be a happy man.

Dave

Recent reports would indicate that the UBP is the party of the moment. The UBP must be rubbing their hands with glee.

2009 end is the cut off point for re-unification talks/agreements and if the UBP are successful in winning an early election then that will be it. Permanent partition and Turkey I think declining EU membership. Fingers crossed.

Hi

Is this why the appointment of a new TRNC London representative has been postponed? As an explanation for the delay it was reported that Talat wanted to make the selection himself and that TCs in England weren't bothered anyway.

I think that CTP have put themselves in absolute s--- and there is nowhere to go but call a general election and pass all the problems over to the next lot, I feel sure it will be UBP. I know hundreds of people who voted CTP thinking that we would have a united Island (not me) but those people are very disappointed with what has happened to this part of the Island. Ferdi Soyer was wondering why the English were leaving!!!!!!! Where is this man coming from. The UBP are more handline when dealing with the South, good.

if you were in buisness youwould know how much this govrment has done to help businesses her all shops closing because nobody can afford the crippling taxes a we all now pay it has doubled over the last two years and another big rise due now most companies have not paid there taxes for the past 2 to 3 months because thay havent got anything left in the kity but still get these huge demands for taxes so if this island is to avoid disaster a genral election would be a way out to help us all

Talat still remains as President even if UBP get it, but if he were an honourabe man he would resign. When he first stood as a Presidential candidate I had quite a row with him about poilitics here on the Island. He kept on and on that everybody wanted to join the EU on the Island and that all the Turkish Cypriots wanted to live side by side with the Greek Cypriots. Guzelyurt voted who heartedly for CTP and Talat, but when you see them now interviewed on TV they all admit what a dreadful mistake they make. He went into the talks willing to give everything away, he has pulled back a little, but not enough. At the funeral last week, the Church had banners all over it with propogander written about the dreadful Turks and people marching with banner dsaying same thing. How can this man sit down like a puppy.

rocking - how did you get to have a conversation with Talat? (row)

Is Talat the head of the CTP or is it Soyer as the Prime minister?

Why does the TC have different elections, one the general election and one for presidentialand and local elctions? I presume the same happens in Turkey with Erdogan and Gul?

If the UBP get in and Talat stays. How does this work? They both represent different parties?

A solution for the Cyprus problem is the only way forward for the TC's. Neither CTP nor the UBP will serve the citizens of NC well. They have failed to do so in the past draining all the wealth of the north in pursuit of self interest.

You are right Karl. They are ready for an upgrade, a new enlightened political party. Not much sign of that happening, not until they have an epiphany, a miraculous awakening.

Mark,

Turkey needs to step back now and let the TC's decide for themselves. This will help Turkey in their quest to join the EU too.

No matter which party is in power, Turkey still has full control over them. Turkey gives the money and therefore gives the orders. TRNC government receives the money from Turkey and therefeore receives the orders too!!

I love Cyprus, will try and answer questions. I knew Talat when he used to come and mend my ice machine (Rita on the Rocks) then when he came to the village touting for votes (not mine) so had big discussion with him then, in fact he could not answer most of my questions - half the village thought I was disrespectful because of questions I asked him. Ferdi Soyer is the Prime Minister of CTP, Talat was before he stood for President. In Turkey it used to be that the President was chosen by the High Court Judges (something like that) but Erdogan changed rules to have parliament elect President so with the majority he has of course Gul was going to get it. Yes Talat would still be the President here even if UBP gets in, unless he resigns. A President is normally a figure head, and the Prime Minister would normally negotiate. But I suppose as Talat and his Greek counterpart went to University in Russia, have something in common.

Thanks rocking for that. I guess, if the UBP gets in Talat would effectively be isolated and lose power. He probably would have no choice but to resign.

In any case, Soyer and Talat seem out of step themselves. Soyer talks about Cypriots being one single community and Talat talks about two separate people (which is the Turkish mainland stance)

Did Talat successfully mend your ice machine?

Are you TC or British?

Talat was born in Kyrenia on July 6, 1952. Completing his secondary education in Cyprus, Talat graduated from Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of the Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara, Turkey.

Involved in various political activities since he was a university student, Talat continued after he returned to Cyprus, and played an important role in the establishment of Turkish Cypriot trade unions and the Turkish Cypriot Students' Youth Federation (KOGEF), becoming the first chairman of its executive board.

There is some talk of the 29th April!!!!!! Came back over several years re the ice machine. I am a Londoner but married to a Turkish Cypriot. We first came to TRNC 1979, had a house build in 1982, then came over permanently in 1987 - and I absolutely love Northern Cyprus.

Sounds like you are a real native now and pleased that you love NC. Thats great to hear.

29th of April. That really isn't far away at all. I read recently, that Christofias said, that a solution right now isn't good for the GC's. He seems to be in no hurry whatsoever, but if TRNC elections are going to take place in April, he must recognise that the UBP could get in, and as you say, he will face tougher negotiations, which would surely mean, no deal will happen.

I think the present government have made such a hash of things that to bail out early is their best option. They have no money left to work with. The talks are going nowhere, separation is inevitable so this may be seen as a move for the greater good!
