We burn pine and I am not happy with the performance.

Burns quickly and does not heat much.

I found this guide on how to find best burning wood useful:

http://www.mastersweep.com/wood.htm

I hope to try the eco-briquettes from this company this week.

http://www.woodstock.com.tr

I heard that olive tree wood and locust wood burns well, but they are not easy to find.

What kind of firewood do you burn?

Where do you buy it ?

Izzet,

The Eco-bricquettes light well and burn very well, almost too well.

If you have an open fire rather than a log burner, you'll find you'll be getting through them very quickly, which makes then quite expensive.

We have used them in our log burner and by turning the air flow down, they do burn longer, but over all i found olive wood better.

Perhaps if coal were available it would help many people, however I understand you need a licence to import it (some was imported a couple of years back).

Perhaps if the forestry commission had the licence, imported coal and sold it on a commission basis through the filling stations (er! at sensible prices which is where this idea will fall apart), they would not need to cut down trees, and we would all have plenty of winter fuel at a sensible price (maybe??), and the forestry commission would get the profits, from which they could plant more trees and secure their own future.

Be very careful abour burning pine.

The resins in pine will eat away at mortar in an open chimney very quickly, leaving you with a bill for a chimney rebuild, or at the least, an increased risk of a chimney fire.

Pine should only be burned in an open fire or a log burner if you have a propietery flue liner installed.

Hardwood, including olive logs, will not cause such problems.

Pine can be safely used if stored in dry conditions for at least 2/3 years. All other woods, including olive should be dry stored for at least 12 mths.

Whatever you do, do not order wood and burn it immediately. Buy it in spring for use next winter. The price of logs is normally cheaper in spring and summer.

Buy it early, store it, dry it! The heat output of 'fully' dried logs is at least 50% higher than 'fresh' logs.

p.s. Are there any chimney sweeps in NC?

Good stick'um..hows it going Memduh?

While looking for logs, I bet you will find a lot of chanteralles (under pine trees) and white mushrooms ( in open fields) too after the rains there should be lots of wild mushrooms .

I bet Lilli would be interested in fresh wild chanteralles if you find any, they are great cooked in a cream sauce with veal.

in Feb-March it will be wild asparagus, mallow, dandelions, chamomile etc etc..

My favorite time of the year in Cyprus.

Sounds more like it. Someone tried selling me less than half a ton of mostly olive, with pine and unseasoned lemon wood for 300YTL.

Do you have a contact number please?

Does anyone know if it is possible to get seasoned wood - we are late starters and having read here, it seems that we should have bought it in the summer...! oops.

We probably just want a ton at a time as we only have space for that in our storage area.

Thanks!

It's a shame the Minister of Forests here isn't more clued up.

If the forestry lot here imported coal, and sold on at a reasonable profit (that's probably where this will fall on stony ground), the profits could, apart of course from topping up the ministers bank account, go to fund planting of more trees for the future. Logs may be cheap here now, but this is a small island of people who are happy to think only of today and sod the future for their own kids. They won't last forever.
