Has anyone heard of having a home system that gives you hot water and central heating from a system running on diesel (like a boiler)? I never heard of it before, but it exists.

Does it work out cheaper in the long run? if one has the radiators installed already to run on gas, can it be converted to run on diesel?

Seems like a good idea, you get hot water at the same time, saving on using the immersion heater .

Any input would be appreciated.

This sort of system is very popular on yachts and heating in lorry cabs.

Manufactureres are Ebersbacher. Not sure however if the systems are beefy enough for a large villa. May be good for an apartment.

They are usually 12 or 24 volts. blown and ducted hot air and water haerting is through a heat exchanger.

My friends have oil fired central heating from a combi-boiler in a remote part of Notts where there is no mains gas. Fuel oil is about 40p a litre but i don`t know if it`s the same as diesel oil. It`s afloor standing boiler with a storage tank outside about 4ft sq. The radiators and plumbing are the same for either fuel, a wet system. The hot water is on demand Ie. the boiler kicks in when the tap`s turned on. The radiators are controlled by the room-stat.

Why don't they build houses over in Cyprus with back boilers heated by the fire? When there isn't enough sun to warm water via solar panels then it's generally time to get the fire on. So why not use that energy to warm up the water and provide central heating? I don't know how feasible it is to retrofit this, probably not very but if I was getting another house built, I think I would be asking for this as a 'feature'.

Yes thats right and log burning stoves are available with back- boilers as i`ve been looking into them to fit two into a barn conversion i`m doing to power the underfloor heating system and provide the hot water supplemented by solar panels if the sun ever comes out.

Our central heating and hot water system runs off diesel. Not the same type of system as message 4 as we have 13 radiators throughout the house. Asel Engineering installed it for us 5 years ago and it has been trouble free and we are cosy!!!!
