Why you should boycott Israel:

What a UN offical had to say about Israel.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/7335875.stm

By Tim Franks

BBC Middle East correspondent

The next UN investigator into Israeli conduct in the occupied territories has stood by comments comparing Israeli actions in Gaza to those of the Nazis.

Speaking to the BBC, Professor Richard Falk said he believed that up to now Israel had been successful in avoiding the criticism that it was due.

Professor Falk is scheduled to take up his post for the UN Human Rights Council later in the year.

But Israel wants his mandate changed to probe Palestinian actions as well.

Professor Falk said he drew the comparison between the treatment of Palestinians with the Nazi record of collective atrocity, because of what he described as the massive Israeli punishment directed at the entire population of Gaza.

He said he understood that it was a provocative thing to say, but at the time, last summer, he had wanted to shake the American public from its torpor.

"If this kind of situation had existed for instance in the manner in which China was dealing with Tibet or the Sudanese government was dealing with Darfur, I think there would be no reluctance to make that comparison," he said.

That reluctance was, he argued, based on the particular historical sensitivity of the Jewish people, and Israel's ability to avoid having their policies held up to international law and morality.

These and other comments from Professor Falk comments are, if anything, even harsher than the current UN investigator, John Dugard, who himself has been withering about Israel's actions.

A spokesman for the Israeli Foreign Ministry said that Israel wanted the UN investigator's mandate changed, so that he could look into human rights violations by the Palestinians as well as Israel.

If that were not to happen, the Israeli government may consider barring entry to the new UN investigator.

Well the Israeli govermment will do just that because how dare someone of importance dare to say anything harmful to the Israeli's.

We know that Israel acted after rockets fired by Hamas. There is a great parallel with Georgia here. They had acted irresponsibly by bombarding the Russians of Osatia which is a province of Georgia. Russia hit back very hard and US and EU came down heavily on the side of Georgia despite the fact that they started it all.

The hypocrasy is so transparent. The fact is that Israel is overreacting as usual and as long as the Jewish community in US control the politics there, the injustice will prevail until they wake up. The trouble is that the Jewish communşty in US is only 2% but hold 10% representation in the senate.

RE msg 4, Ismet : (...) The fact is that Israel is overreacting (...)

===> We disagree here, Ismet. If Hamas didn't fire rockets into Israel, there wouldn't be any Israeli reacting, forget OVERreacting. The ceaese-fire would have had a chance to become peace (Jordan and Egypt did it!) - Hamas wasn't interested.

Hamas is the elected power in Gaza (for what that is worth after the bloody clash with their fellow-Palestinians from Al-Fatah) and I would suggest Hamas to use its money to buy food for the population instead of rockets against Israel. Even better: they could learn from Israel how to grow tomatoes and other vegetables on sand.

RE msg 7 : As far as I know no tulips, but Israel exports a high quality assortment of flowers - indeed with aid and advice from Holland. And vegetables and fruit and high quality computer software etc, etc.

What else than daily terror do your favourite "freedom fighters" from Hamas export (and cause in Gaza)?

RE msg 10, deecyprus4 : (...) DC you really are a scatterbrain (...)

===> Dee, you really are a cheap and worthless contributor. I called *you* a scatterbrain yesterday (I admit, I had to find the right but very appropriate word in my dictionary and I'm satisfied that the word passed the Mods judgement) and all you can do is... You've obviously never learnt to loose a debate or discussion with dignity - all you can do is make it personal and call others idiots, sheeps etc etc when they disagree with you or ask for counter-arguments. Sad and hopeless.

I thought Boycott had retired from Cricket!!! (joke)

Elko2

You are so right about the hypocrisy but at the end of the day if you start aggressive action and then get your arse kicked you are in no position to complain. What many don't seem to realise is that there are quite a number of Palestinians who actually live in Israel quite happily. If the Israeli's are out to destroy all Palestinians, as Dee thinks, why are these Palestinians quite happy to live in Israel. The silence from the other Arab nations also demonstrates THEIR feeling's about Hamas.

I hate war and innocent people dying in the name of " a cause" but I still support the right of ANY country to defend itself

The problem here is that everyone has their own "truth". Logic is long gone.

There was, however, an interesting snippet on the news (TV) this morning:

"Hamas are exchanging gunfire with other Palestinian fighters in Gaza this morning."

Is this true? I have no idea. If it proves to be true it begs several very interesting questions.

No doubt what will happen next is that Hamas supporters will denounce it as lies as it is rather inconvenient for them and Israeli supporters will say that it proves this that and the other about Hamas, all without bothering to find out the facts.

Dee, I repeat my message from yesterday (in a different thread): "You don't argue, you shout your silly remarks to us. I'm glad you're not on my side in this 'discussion'. I quit or ignore this thread, you're hopeless."

I fear this message may become a habit - whenever you start or enter a thread. One cannot have a debate with a political fanatic.

All they have to do is stop firing the rockets!!! Hamas do not care about their own people, all they care about is power. They really are the most stupid people on this planet. Just stop firing the rockets??? How hard is this to understand?. Hamas fired 600, yes 600 rockets in this last week alone. Who is helping them? The bloody Syrians and Iranians thats who. Building tunnels and bringing rockets in for the Hamas to fire into Israel. Just bloody stop it.

Israeli troops have now invaded the Gaza strip and have cut the territory in half with tank blockades. Israeli warships have prevented any movement along the coastal road. What a disaster, and no end in sight.
