4.8.metre shark caught 500 mts off Kumyali beach yesterday. As usual the papers sensationalise it. Don't worry as it was only a Thresher Shark which are quite common both in the Med and around the English coast. The 4.8 metres includes it's tail which accounts for 2/3rds of it's total body length. I have dived with and photographed these Sharks on a number of occasions as well as many other species considered "dangerous" and have never had a problem with them.

There are in my opinion other " Sharks" in TRNC that you need to be more aware of.!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a shark swim past me whilst dipping in the paciffic on mission Beach San Diego. I came out of the water not knowing what was going on. Sat on the beach looking back in to the sea for ages and my two buddies asked "Have you seen a Shark" !!! Stayed with me fora long time, I was put at ease by being told.....If you saw the shark....then he must have seen you!!!!

Everytime I go for a swim in the sea I am aware of my surroundings and do not travel out to far. I watch Shark programmes with interest.

You may be interested to know that from the millions pf people who swim in the sea year in year out there are only an average 100 attacks every year of which only 10% are fatal. Most shark attack victims never even see the shark that hits them. I have swum and photographed a number of different species whilst studying them and have never felt threatened even by fairly large one's( up to around 4 metres).

I think they are the most misunderstood and maligned creature on the planet

335.

I have respect for these creatures and wish them no harm. Programmes facinate me and I would love to be in the water with experienced divers to have a look at them.

Watched a programme last night on the "Tommy Shark" was made off Cape Town. The shark is better known as the most feared shark that we know?

HMS Birkenhead sank after hitting a reef off shore and over 500 British Troops went in to the waters. Women & Children were taken off on 3 lifeboats, which was the first cry of "Women & Children First" and later was known as the "Birkenhead Procedure"

Most of the soldiers died from the cold as the waters on this point are freezing. Those that were attacked by sharks were just off which is now recognised as their main feeding grounds in this part of the world…... Unlucky or what. Shark named after the "Tommy" which was the name for our brave lads.

Lots of other interesting snippets in the programme.

If ever you are interested I have loads and loads of books and videos about sharks as I have studied them for around 35 years now!!!!

One thing I should have said in msg9 is that these stats refer to recorded attacks. By definition there are bound to be some unrecorded due to location, remoteness and ship/plane wrecks with no survivors.

I even found a fossilised tooth from a Great White off Australia which I have at home. It is about 2.5 inches long but in amazing condition and I found it at about 40 metres off a reef. Haven't had it dated but it is old!!!

Daft as it sounds but doing just that has actually helped save a number of people. Due to the fact that Sharks have extremely sensitive noses
