Hi im moving over next year, and in the process of buying usual stuff like tv kitchen things, linen etc. But was wondering after reading various threads looks like theres quite a bit that you A) cant find in N.Cyprus or if you can is expensive..this we all know. Can anyone help with any comments or advice on things maybe they regret not bringing after living there for a while or any advice on what to bring/not to bring...?

thanks hope you are all having a nice evening!

lulubell and barabus - you'll get loads of good advice from people on this forum. I think a lot depends on whether you're bringing a container or just large suitcases!

You'll be surprised what you can bring over several trips with a couple of cases!

Good luck

Jean

Thanks wicks, how much are we talking for a container ?...roughly and how much really for any other type of shipment. I know this is a bittie bizarre, but I used to be one of the worlds top dealers in a certain type of cellectable toy and I have kept one full set for investment purposes and would hate to NOT have them here.

lulubell and barabus - never used Jo Valentine, but have heard very good reports. Worth getting a quote I reckon

PS Lulu - if you can fit it in, I think a good idea about electric blanket - it can get bloody cold at night. Like you, never use one at home, but .....

PS Dolphin seem to be very helpful - they gave us some good advice in the past. They have a website and also advertise in Cyprus Today.

Hope this is helpful

my advice - don't be hasty in throwing anything away, for example you won't believe how cold it gets here in the winter.

Most things you have in the uk will be more expensive here and often harder to get.

Hope this is helpful,

Lulubelle ..I dont live inTRNC but converse regularly with most people on the board and the one thing they have not yetmentioned to you is ,if your villa/apartment has no central heating bring some Parrafin Heaters with you..A lot of the board members have told you it gets cold at night in the winter and tobring a electric blanket,I would certainly put a coup[le of heaters in as I do believe electric heaters or using your air con on heat can be a bit expensive....

Electric blanket definitely and stick in a log burning stove as well if you've got room. Oh and if your husband has got feet bigger than a size 11 make sure you bring plenty of shoes!

Hi Lulu,

we had a container through Olaytrans.

To be honest, I quite liked living minimalistic, so when they unloaded all my stuff, I wished I hadn't bothered, be careful, there isn't a lot of storage in these houses.

There are three things that I'm glad I bought over;

my steam iron with exra shsh, george foreman grill, and the slow cooker.

Also, be careful bringing your car over, import duty is so high now.

I'm sure you will be happy here, with or without a container load of possetions

good luck Lulu,

x,

hi lulubell well i think you have received some very good advice. however i would check out the car situation. dependant of the age and country of origin thats howw they base the import car. Cars here are very expensive even for a banger they want top dollar. I am not sure but if you bring your car I think you have a year to pay taxes. I will try to find out for youHave a good day and I will email you once I have some info. Love lilli xxx

Lulu,

We bought our car over in a container. Yes we did have a year as a tourist.

But after that year, the import surcharge had gone up.

We budgeted about £5,000 to import it. After the year it cost us over

£10,000. In hindsight, we'd have been better just buying one over here.

Cars are more expensive here, but once you've paid all the dues on an

imported car, it works out about the same, with less agro.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Things to bring from the UK:

Any and all things electronic (tvs, hi-fis, computers etc) are much cheaper in the UK and you'll have a much better selection than here. If you're bringing a plasma tv be sure to stow it upright and in such a way that it cant fall flat (to do with the gas in the screen or some such).

Bed linen: 100% cotton.

Kitchen utensils and equipment - better quality from UK.

Sofas and suites from the UK are of a better quality and use better padding than here.

If you're installing curtains heavier than gauze that need runners rather than a bar then see if you can source heavy duty curtain-railing and METAL runners and hooks and eyes.

Things to source here:

White goods are ok here and will carry guarantees so probably not much point in bringing them from the UK.

Garden furniture: there's quite a good selection here but I'm unsure as to how the prices compare with the UK

If you dont have air conditioning, a few good fans. The ones you buy in Cyprus all have a very short life span.

Hi Lulu.

We have moved over here from N.I also and just wondering if you are sending a container would there be any space for a few boxes in it. We would of course contribute to the cost. We are not talking about a lot (2 or 3) so don't panic. I Hope you will be doing your mobile beauty when you get here and some real brown bread would be heaven.

Yes it is cold at night but right now it is just over 70 degrees in bright sunshine, something like home I suppose!

You can ring me on 028 95812775 anytime.

The only reason we did not bring a tumble dryer with us,was that we thought it would just be the two of us at winter, how wrong we were with family coming over it was difficult getting the towels dryed, it would be handy !!!

lullu

bring everything!

forget the car the customs tax will be stupid, more like 100% of the value.

they told us 7k before we sent ours on arrival 7k became 12k.

a friend brought one in last april again tax was 12k

if you need a shipping company try george baker at felixstowe, they are on the net.

dolphin are a load of scammers who let us down at the last minute.

(they wanted to leave our brand new car parked in the street in north london for a week before putting it on the boat.)

Hi

We used valentines and i can recommend them very professional company

In terms of what to bring, everything that you where going to bring then add everything that you where going to throw away, then when you get here you wont be saying i wish we had brought that as well, as we are doing now

In respect of a car we drove over and the cost of importing it was horrific

especially as they made us pay the import costs after a month not this time next year as we hoped.in terms of what things cost here garden furniture,sunbeds,b-b-q,s are expensive as are most things electrical TVs,s etc

my wife swears by her tumble dryer you do need one at this time of year just wish we had put an electric blanket in

Also bring your own fridge freezer, I remember being in the same situation as yourself, and i asked the same question, and some of the replies i got was how the fridge freezer in the UK was no good, and that i will have to buy one here that can cope with the Cypriot heat, what a load of bollocks you can save yourself money if you bring one over.

Hi lulubell

I am from Ballymena and we have a property on the TBV site. I would recommend you bring a safe (purchased one from Makro for £19.99) and also fire blankets and extinguishers if you have room they are expensive. I brought all blankets, quilts and covers, curtains, all electric stuff for kitchen and living area, bbq and 4 recliner chairs. All over on the plane!!! I did get some strange looks but what the hell you have to chance it. Got it over no problems.

I did bring Lilli her soda and potato bread the last time I was over in August. Lilli I will hopefully be over April/May and also in July and I have your soda/potato bread on my list. We will be back for a meal.

Hi, we used Olaytrans - they were fantastic - the one brilliant piece of advice we got was to bring a shed! They are very expensive here and ours has been a godsend (flat pack from B&Q)!

There is an element of truth to the temperature issue, but you are quite right in saying that it is better to bring one from the UK, as freezers that meet the 'class requirements' are readily available in the UK - you just need to check.

"Climate class-

This is the room temperature that the fridge freezer can operate in. The most common classes in the UK are N class which means it should be in a room with a minimum temperature of 16°C and a maximum temperature of 32°C. SN models can cope in temperatures between 10°C and 32°C. Other classes are ST and T which operates best at a minimum temperature of 18°C and a maximum of 38°C and 43°C respectively." taken from http://www.reevoo.com/pages/fridge_freezer_buying_guide

Most Samsung fridge/freezers are ok, class info is given on a label inside the fridge compartment, and in the handbook.

You may want to take the item out of its original packing, and use it for a while to avoid having to pay Custom's duty!

lullubell

jock is quite correct regarding fridge freezers.

buy something that is A rated as the electric prices here are on the up and up.

in the uk we always either ate out or purchased fresh food on the way home and cooked.

here my freezer is a god send and i never used one in the uk.

its just so time saving and you can shop without having to drive miles to get fresh everyday.

also i can have a big shop in the south where prices are cheaper and quality better and just stock up.

its amazing how you can adapt, lol.

i might have a freezer now, but still don't need a microwave,lol.

Lulubell, you have received a huge amount of advice and I have found it very interesting. But one thing not mentioned is the comparative costs of import when everything is added-up compared with bringing some oddments over on the plane and buying the rest locally.

My situation is different in that I just want to furnish a holiday flat in the next 2 months, but just what are the real essentials that MUST be brought from home ? Surely the cost of collection from UK home, freight and insurance, customs clearance, duty, and final delivery to the local address must weigh heavily on the expected bonus of getting say a fridge or tumble drier a 100 quid cheaper than in Cyprus?

Just wondering - cheers

yes i have had lots of helpful advice and feedback, and it is also a very different situation for me as we are moving over permanently this year and have not purchased a holiday home, therefore a container will be shipping all of our belongings over anyway so a few extra things doesnt really make much difference and maybe its just easy to bring some things that you cannot find easily in trnc.

Thanks for your quick response, but I was rather hoping that some old hands with such experience in these calculations would respond, as I appreciate that you are like me in terms of making a first move. Though, to my advantage I have been working in TRNC over the past 2 years and have some idea of 'how it works' as it were. But perhaps as a professional economist I am attracted to working out the costs ! Does that make me dull ??

cheers

Guin in my experience (first setting up a holiday home then moving here permanently) there is nothing that you absolutely must bring from the UK other than your personal effects, e.g. clothes. We brought a couple of items of furniture that we wanted to keep (for example a large antique cupboard that has been a godsend in the kitchen) but unless you are bringing a full container then I would say that the cost outweighs the benefit. The items we brought came overland and we paid rediculous amounts of duty on stuff that was old and definitely well used.

Thanks J&J and Nick.

J&J you are proving the rule I think. You will remember from our previous contact my intention was to buy a holiday flat and then find a retirement home later. So now I have found the flat I am in phase 1. But I appreciate that you and Lulubell do have a different agenda.

Nick, I fully appreciate your view, but there are plenty of heaters for sale in TRNC without the need for me to import one, well, maybe a fan heater in the luggage perhaps. I have also seen the recommendaton for catalytic paraffin heaters, but I doubt very much that they are easily found at the right price in UK, such is their volume of sales there.

As an expat worker I have seen many heaters in other countries right for the local conditions, so assume the same for TRNC. Though, I note that a few members like the heating supplied by the standard aircon blower. Though in my experience maybe the addition of a ceiling fan would make it more efficient.

Great help, thanks to you all

Hi Guinness

I have a 3 bed apartment on TBV. I brought over on 1st trip all curtains, bedding, pots, cutlery, cockery, kettle, toaster (refused to pay £45 to £60 for each) TV/DVD,drill, hoover was over my limit on baggage but just paid the excess I used the 4 hold baggage to my advantage and brought my clothes in the handluggage. Use vacume bags.

2nd trip - 4 recliner chairs, rugs, folddown tables, light fittings, hubby brought over electrical stuff as this is expensive. No surcharge used my charm which was really my 4 year having a hissy fit at the check in and the guy just wanted rid of us so everything booked on no charge.

Next trip - ceiling fans and energy saving lightbulbs

Hope it helps

I think they will tell you where to go , but hey i might be wrong , but how would you transtport them from the airport unless you can hire a people carrier or lorry , and don't forget they are quite heavy at that size , so you will be looking at axcess because it's only 20 kg per person baggage allowance . Or maybe Jo valentine can take them over for you , she does post if she has room left in her containers , e-mail her , it might just be worth it . Good luck , i hope you are successful

hi guin

if you want to bring in a container i have someone in lefkosa who will help you, from our village. hence you won't get stung for major taxes!

but as a holiday home you should shop locally and as i think you only get one chance for personal stuff when you live here full time, leave that for retirement.

when are you next out??

i can get someone in your area to help you with shopping so you get a local price, lol.

RE: Msg 65.

Hello FS you have picked-up a posting I made in January ! But thanks for your care and I will take you up on your offer of some more of your kind help, will be in touch soon. Since my last trip - and after spending valuable time with Simbas in UK and getting some very good advice - we have accumulated some essentials. The vacuum bags used on my trip in January were invaluable, so we have bought 5 more ! In the next 2 weeks will be bringing small electricals and tools, towels, curtains and bedding (surprising how much you need for a 4/6 person home). Also took your hubby's advice and stocked with tea bags & coffee ! We are gradually accumulating and weighing packed luggage on the bathroom scales as we go. I would advise anyone in a similar situation to look at Ikea for bedding & towels, plus the major mail order catalogues for sales of curtains, we found some real bargains. Oh don't I sound domesticated !

Cheers all

guin

Hi lullubell,

I used to work in customs and here is my suggestions:

Dont bring ( you can but not worth it!!)

1) Car

2) Chainsaw ( not quite sure whether you are into things like this! )

3) Fax machine ( special licence required)

4) Telephone ( " " " )

5) Not more than one tv ( if so you have to pay approx 30stg per tv)

6) Not more than one of garden electrical goods.

7) Anything that it will draw customs officers attention e.g. 50 pairs of shoes or 10 boxes of wines etc.

What to bring:

1) Yourself ( come on summer is here!)

2) Garden furniture ( very expensive here)

3) Anything

Advice:

Do not keep any orijinal wrappings on even new products!!!

List them all second hand

Once you goods arrives here in trnc there is maximum couple of hours running around to do and..............you can sit back and enjoy the sunshine....

good luck.

if you need further details drop me a line,

I love helping,

Segmen

segman

you must have had loads of free kebabs, cos the price of more than one tv sound a little high to me,lol.

you probably still work for customs regarding your advice!

i bet you love helping!

lulubell,

Am too lazy to read all the previous threads, so here is my advice (apologies if I'm repeating!)

Electronic goods (tv, radio etc): bring from UK

Bed linen: from overseas if possible

From my experience, it can be expensive furnishing an apartment in NC unless you have good friends who will let you know what is best to buy there, or in the UK/overseas. Best thing is to ask people living there where is best to buy in NC. I've heard Ikea in the South is very expensive too? But perhaps I'm wrong in this?

I would say:- Duvets & covers etc. microwave, dvd player, good candles,

instant coffee (if you like it) non-stick pans.

Have never needed electric blankets but hottie useful

Winters are mild compared to ours but think folk get used to

them. Never needed dryer either, plenty of days when you

dry outside on patio, but if you have big family, maybe?

Firestarter, you are completely wrong about Segmen..and I think you should apologise for those horrible remarks..he is one of the nicest most genuine people here..he doesn't work for customs...he has his own business and sells his products at very reasonable rates and gives discounts..and he is only too happy to help anyone.

I am shocked by your remarks.. Dee

dee,

my remarks about the tv i stand by. 30 gbp is far too much tax for a tv, we have a 42 inch plasma, we didn't pay that price.

customs officers here , it is well known they like a free kebab and a free drink.

i also asked where he previously worked for customs? as i was interested as most people i have met from customs don't speak english .

i don't know segmen and can't comment on his business or his discounts, so i guess no apology needed!!

Hi firestarter,

I don't think that it matters what size the TV is, - I believe that ALL TVs (in excess of ONE) attract the same duty.

Have to agree that I don't remember it being 30GBP, although it was 3 years ago now...

Keith.

msg 63 Some years ago I brought over the biggest Trampoline you can buy, via; Heathrow. My Wife, my Son and I , negotiated 4 Trolley loads of metal Tubes, Bars and canvas through a busy Terminal. Oh, we were popular!!!

Managed to avoid paying Duty mainly because they couldn,nt wait to shift us from the Desk. (Huge Queue behind us). At Ercan, we almost completely filled the Tour Minibus . We brought it to sell. We did, but that's another story!!

Yes, it's amazing what you can get away with sometimes ,but I wouln't recommend it as a general rule.

Hi Mrs Snakes

Our container arrives May 2nd so we are in the same position as you, loads to do and time running out. Thirty six years in this house and two children as well means a hell of a lot of clutter, I can't believe some of the stuff we have thrown out. Hope everything goes well for you

Lulubell I'll give you 12 months and I bet you'll be having a clear-out of all the things you brought with you and realise you either don't really need or can't fit in your house!

Good luck with your move and I hope everything goes smoothly.

Oh Jo ,

Please don't say that, I have thrown so much stuff away/given to charity/passed on to family that there cannot possibly be anything that I don't need in Cyprus that I have packed in these dozens of boxes.

Tired but undefeated, yet ! Not long now until we finally make the move.
