If you were going to open a business here what would it be? Is there a niche somewhere?

A chimney sweep.

Not only do you get to sweep chimneys but you get invited to weddings as well.

hi again bill, if i had the money and access to the grants available i would open a re cycling plant. I am so surprised that no body has done this. Also you see old cars everywhere, there must be a demand for scrap metal. Buisness here open daily and close within a month or 2. The bankrupcy courts are full with around 20 or so each day. There could be plenty of opportunities but it the duties you have to pay to bring anything in that deter people. We would love to bring really good New world Italian and french wines but you would be horrified at the duty.

Re cycling would not appear to be a good idea, at present the market is very depressed, U K councils are having to store vast amounts.

Here's my shot at a business that involves re-cycling TRNC waste, art & design.

Robs Stained Glass Studios.

Colours will be mostly shades of brown, due to the use of empty Efes bottles.

Production will initially be small scale for windows, art, vases, light fittings etc.,

but will expand dramatically once Wyn has moved to the island!

I would import and supply electric and solar powered de-salination untis, you can get small domestic models that process about 1-2 ton per day, and have a small tanker to deliver sea water to the houses.

8ytl/ton for sea water is a lot of profit

All the rubbish collected is sorted for recycling where possible, it is all sorted at the collection depot.

Hi Brian24001,

Have you got a spare small stainless steel tanker knocking about? If you haven't, by the time you buy one, get road tax and insurance and fill it up with diesel, pay the driver (even if thats yourself) you will knock a big hole in your "lot of profit". I've done the sums for seawater swimming pools and the problem is that although the sea water might be "free", getting it out of the sea and delivered isn't.

I know the maths Vaughan.

I woudn't actually get involved in any type of business in NC, but if the encouragement and incentives were there, this 'could' be an opportunity for someone.

BTW I would use a plastic tank, stainless rusts like buggery in any chloride bearing liquid.

If I had plenty of money to spare, I'd open up a bowling alley. It would make a change for going to a bar or restuarant.

It would also suit all age groups.

There are exemptions for duty on certain imported capital items for use in approved tourist facilities. They do not exempt you from KDV however.

Sorted by the tourist ministry.
