I have a TC friend, who came from the South. He originally did not have a surname, but took the name of the village he fled from.

Surnames (as we know them) were only introduced in Turkey after Mustafa Ataturk came into power in the 1920's. The introduction of surnames were part of his Westernisation of Turkey. I think that this was only adopted by Turkish Cypriots after 1974. So no, he isn't telling porkies!!

thanks for that guys.

it all makes sence now, sort of?

so if your birth certificate said your surname on it, after 1974 was the additional surname given with some sort of documentation?

this guy was born in the trnc, under british rule.

hi cyprusishome

my friend has the same sort of problem, which i was having to explain in a letter to the uk pension people.

he recently got married but the certificate is in his turkish surname not in his origional which is on his passport and uk documents.

marriage certificate and passport in different names.

try explaining that to the pension people!

i dread to think what they will make of it.

it sounds like he should have some sort of documentation regarding the second surname, i will chase him up on this and if not see where he can get some sort of legal conformation.

rose,

That's why people started calling themselves "Volkan/Volcano" and "Teknikal/Technical" etc etc when they were given the chance of a new name. Funny how I've never met a "KarsiCleaner" yet.

your friend needs to get a 'soyadı varakası' that states your new surname. İ dont think you should have any problem my parents changed their surname and they get a pension from UK. As long as Quarmby says not 2 pensions.

I used to work with a TC called Rajhib Rajhib - he always said that his father had celebrated to excess before the 'Naming', and became a little confused...

The issue is not of 2 surnames.

Before 74 people were called by their name then the name of their father.

So if your name was Ali and your father's name was Mustafa then you would be called as Ali Mustafa and so on.

After 74 there was a surname legislation which has passed. So each family had a surname and everyone would be called with their name followed by the Surname (Not their father's name)

So it is a replacement not instead of your previous surname.

Hope this is clear enough.

thanks biker

this is the thing with our friend, he just failed to tell the pension people and explain.

hence in the uk he is still using his name and his fathers name as his surname.

not the second surname so to speak.

remembering he went to the uk many years ago.

he should have straightened it out but hasn't up till now when he has to.

because he just got re married, so we wrote to them explaining, hopefully they will understand.

he must have some documents somewhere, i will just get him to look for them.
