Iv'e read a few things on here about bugs and how to keep them off dogs...Don't know much about cannine anti bug juice, but I do know a very, very affective and cheap way of keeping them away from people...might be transferable in some way and it will make your pooch smell lovely.

My family get eaten alive by them wherever they go...We tried everything. Nothing truly worked, with 100% protection. All the usual guff. Skin'so'soft, eat plenty of garlic or spend your money buying expensive stuff from the chemist here that won't really last too long....get a massage base oil. Probably better with sweetalmond, or if you wanna really plash out and be kind to your skin, Advocado. then buy Citronnela essential oil and either Rosemary or Lavendar....Of course buy this all in the UK, here it will cost you a fortune. First night here in my appartment I was bitten about 30 times. Next day got the goods..not another bite. 20 quid well spent in the UK for a years supply and gauranteed no bites

I swear by catcus juice. Prevention, cure, sun creams. Totally natural Aloe they even do kids sun creams with bite prevention and smells good too.

http://www.cactusjuice.co.uk you will be transferred to another page as a new company now sells it in the UK.

Sorry didn't answer quicker Dozza.....inexpensive, long lasting and I really can't be emphatic enough how really really effective this is....

You don't buy it, you make it and it takes all of a minute to make....

go into just about anywhere in the UK...Boots, Holland and Barret etc, etc, and buy 500 mls of massage oil...i'd advise Sallon Services...much cheaper.

Then buy 25 mls of Citronnela essential oil (this is the active ingredient in most bug repellents) and either 25 mls of Rosemary essentail oil or pure lavendar oil....depending on the smell you want and these also give it extra repellant qualities.

Then drip abot 30 drops of the Citronnela and 30 drops of the other in and shake vigorously....and viola !!!! you have a bug repellant that no bug can stand. aaaaah !! not to mention the aroma !!.....to be honest, 20 quids worth and it will probably be enough if used correctly, to last about 3 years. get fed up with it...you have a massge oil. just use sparingly

That is a VERY, VERY, VERY, VERY good point Craig.........and very, very silly of me NOT mentioning it, Not only would the oil act as lots of little lenses on the skin, but I also believe the Citronella me be photo sensitive...not a gtreat mix.....I assure you NO bites, but too much and you might have some little white spots.

HI

After reading this thread i would like to post my own personal professional opinion. Please be carefull when making any concoction with essential oils. Essential oils should be measured and used very very carefully, yes citronella does work as a insect repellant but unfortunately it is not as easy as 25ml of this and 25 ml of that shake it up and home made remedy!!! Firstly i would like to say that ANYONE with a nut allergy or children with nut allergy SHOULD NOT USE ALMOND OIL.. as it is a nut based oil, Also you need to be aware esential oils need to be stored in correct bottle etc. and before you apply on children again check they have no allergies.Aromathery is very complex , i have studied and trained in all aspects of beauty and have done for 16 years and sometimes people make it sound very easy,if it was really this simple people would not need to study for such long periods!!

As for using it on animals dogs etc, animals cannot break down the esential oils in there system

and you would need to check with your vet before applying any oils to you pet, this sort of mix of esential oils can be burned in oil burner around the house if wanted to act as an insect repellant, but just be cautious when making your own home mix.

thanks

barabus, I didnt doubt for one minute your ability. what i am saying is if you are going to suggest a aromatherapy or essential oils to people then perhaps a more in depth detailing as you obvioulsy know the ins and outs pros and cons of essential oils but perhaps go on the basis that others at home dont have this knowledge, yes im sure your course with its clinical experience is all very valid as is my degree in science and many qualifications in beauty therapy so being perhaps in your position i just think more information and dos and donts, for example you stated 2 oils which are both nut based, people at home might not necessarily know not to ue if they have a nut allergy, hence maybe state this or offer an alternative such as a vitoleum nut free oil which is good for people with nut allergy and without and im sure you are aware of the consequences if someone uses the wrong product with your qualifications and experience. I also didnt direct the thread at you personally it was my

professional opinion and i simply said that it is not as easy as some of this oil and some of that oil mixed together and voila!!! My specific worry was that someone with only half of the correct information could possibly cause themselves more damage than good all with good intentions, as you are well aware when using NEAT esential oils or any kind of massage treatment you always give a consultation, as you are well aware to check for contraindications and existing medical problems. I just felt that you perhaps didnt give enough info on this matter and made it sound all so simple.

Hi firestarter

well my views on homeopathy are limited im afraid as it is different to aromatherapy and essential oils. I have treated my daughter with homeopathic medicine, unfortunately it is very very long winded and to treat a condition unfortunately you do not get quick results so i chose to go back to traditional medicine to treat her problem..

Thank goodness she isnt really a poorly child but esential oils play a big part at home as i do use oils to burn eg geranium in an oil burner as insect repellant very effective i tend not to use on her skin shes very young. For example i burnt the tips of my fingers stupidly after having ironed i unplugged the iron and picked it up and burnt my fingertips, immediatley warm water stainless steel bowl or glass bowl added rock salt and a few drops of lavender oil bathed in solution and i had no blisters or scarring so they are effective in this way but i would say very dubious regarding animals as they cannot break down in the oils in

You are off course onlt too right lulu............There was much I never said and went into....jumped the gun unfortunately. I have seen the affect that nut oils can have on people.......and it was a nut free oil...It wasn't me, but the only conclusion I could come to was that there was a residue on the containers used.....as far as the animals are concerned I did'nt really say use them on them. I know you weren't having a dig...you were merely pointing out a lot of things I should have and maybe ı should do more work...when actually at my work.
