There have been several discussions regarding the way forward for Cyprus as an Island.

What are members proposals, views and opinions upon a future that maintains the current peace, provides settlement of property, political and nationalistic issues and moves Cyprus forward towards a unillaterally accepted and unified Island.

It would be most beneficial that proposals focus upon the important precedent for peace and prosperity for ALL

I really think that there is not enough common ground between TC's and GC's for a 100% solution that will satisfy everyone. If a solution is all or nothing then I don't see it going anywhere. I would like to think that a compromise solution could be arrived at with further normalisation of relationships both TRNC/RoC and TRNC/Rest of the World, with the balance of the issues to be revisited in the future. I could see the TC's going for that but not the GC's.

speaking with people from both north and south i think they do realise that they are going to have to compromise and will never have 100% it all their own way.

it will be about how much compromise they are prepaired for.

there are so many people working towards a solution that it would be such a shame to let this opportunity pass.

re msg 1/ Waz - your ideal seems fine to any unbiased person... who is going to compromise the most..?

Who has the longest memory for injustices, and can't forgive.. all VERY understandable.

So many Cypriots lost loved ones, their possessions and homes to get your version of "peace"..

re/6 "TRNC" Vaughan - I think you know, that the stumbling block to every plan is GCs say they want their property / land back..or the RIGHT to go back, and TCs seek autonomy, protection.

The funny thing is when TR held the Eurovision contest, we saw TR called Cyprus "Cyprus" and the RoC flag was shown as the flag of Cyprus...2004

I remember the streets of Limassol in 2003 - every kid, every shop , bar, was listening/ playing to the Turkish winner of Eurovision.. Cyprus and TR gave each other points..

Then "Liealotopulous" came to power and promised GCs a "better" solution..

We should engineer a Cyprus win for Eurovision, a great TC footballer playing for Cyprus, and who knows...

Compromise is not an option for the Greeks, they want it all and they want it NOW.

In the meantime if the talks result in the people being able to vote then I believe whatever it is both sides will say no, as they have lost faith with the politicians.

Things will continue as normal and peace will remain as we know it.

Hi CJtill!

re msg 9

Please don't "encourage" some Greek speaking Cypriots by referring to them as "Greeks".. Greece is a country 300 miles to the west ..

Greeks WANT TR in the EU....

The sooner all Cypriots can live without the "help" of the Motherlands, the better...

Waz

You have hit the nail on the head to live in peace should be paramount

My view we already do

Close the boarder and become part of Turkey

I agree this may not ensure short term prosperity be you will be able to sleep soundly in your bed at night

how would you feel if you were in their shoes? More importantly to many ex-pats - how would you feel if you were in their HOUSES? Worried? I would be!!

I hope for reunification, for the Islands sake, not for my own sake.

I can’t understand why we would rather live with people who tried to exterminate us, turned on us when we were their neighbours and murdered us in our beds rather than those who came and risked their lives to save us?

Are we so easily deceived?

I can only imagine we put the thought of money before our safety

msg 12,

"Close the boarder and become part of Turkey"

Turkey doesn't ever want that to happen but more importantly neither do the Turkish Cypriots. They are Turkish-speaking Cypriots, not Turks.

I am a Turkish Cypriot

If we do fall for the GC propaganda, put our wallets in front of our brains and once again get into bed with them I hope the mainland Turks don’t take a similar view and refuse to come to our rescue a second time

Its good to get everyones opinion even if you dont agree with it.

The referendum (when it comes) will decide the islands future.

Meddmale, re msg 12/14

1/ It ain't a "border" and it was opened because Turkey HAD to open it because a TC Doctor won a ECHR ruling - against Turkey. As he was being prevented from crossing.

2/ If annexing the part of Cyprus currently under TR control was an "option".. don't you think it would have been done, already ?

3/ I wonder how many TCs would thank you, who earn a living in the "rump" RoC?

It is not so many years ago shells fell in Dubrovnik, and tourism in N.Ireland was a joke...

If you think most GCs don't realise that (militarily) TR holds the upper hand.. WAKE UP.. they have been ( until recently) much more savvy politically and legally.

i think you only have to walk around orphanides in the south to see many tc's doing their weekly shopping.

we usually meet loads of people we know.

along with many of the restaurant owners from the north.

OK OK....I'll ask and look stupid.

Why is the Republic Of Cyprus referred to as the "rump"?

If it's a steak analogy, then it's not the best cut,and is in fact the arse end !
