It saddens me to post this but I think it's right to warn everyone. A lady known to me personally last Sunday was the victim of a theft in a car park in Girne in broad daylight.

Clearly the perpetrator had been lying in wait for a suitable victim. She opened the driver's side door of her car and before sitting in the driver's seat, she placed her handbag on the passenger seat. Within seconds the passenger door was opened by the thief and her bag was taken.

I have been in TRNC 2 and a half years and it is really very sad to see how crime is on the increase here. Be careful out there guys.

Thanks Kitty1 Hopefully it will make us a bit more alert and not take things for granted, that's a habit of mine and probably every other woman out there who put their bag on the passenger seat, just have to make sure we put the central locking on

Thanks for posting this Kitty.

Unfortunately it certainly does seem that crime is on the increase. The worry is that these criminals are getting bolder or more desperate as the building jobs they came to work on dry up.

It pains me to say this but having been a victim too, I now don't feel safe in my house there anymore. I am coming next month with 2 motion sensors, security lights and locks for all the windows and patio doors. To date I have spent £350 on all this extra security just to feel comfortable. Sad days.

Ballyboffin i suggest you do what my late uncle did wire up your front gate to the mains electrical supply at night.

Unfortunately late one night my aunt was wakened from her comfortable bed to the horrific screams of some drunk who had the misfortune to urinate on said gate his screams could be heard by everybody up and down the street.

They were never bothered by intruders again

Just to let everyone know who's on here this little tip: ALWAYS put your valuables including your handbags in the boot.

Msg 8, I was on a farm a few years ago and had to help get some calves back into a field, it was rainy, dark and slippery and put my hand out to steady myself.......I have never forgotten what happened next, the electric fence had not been turned off, I will leave the rest to your imagination.

Before everyone starts feeling insecure, unsafe whatever, if you want to put things into perspective a little, pop down to Jo'berg for a week, where there are so many car jackings at traffic lights, the owners getting out and shot, people robbed in the street at gun point, and often shot after handing over money etc that the events rarely even make the papers.

NC is one of the safest places I know of. Just be vigilant and don't carry excessive valuables, and for the ladies, the safest way is to keep the bag on your lap until you drive off. And if you leave the bank with a large amount of cash, don't put it in a bag, put it in pockets as most thieves will take a bag and run.

Does anyone know whether the TRNC law favours the criminal or the victim?

If you are robbed/mugged in the UK and aprehend the criminal and give them a 'good beating' you are more likeley to be the one that ends up in trouble. Would this apply in N Cyprus?

I never used to feel uncomfortable or threatened in any way, but lately I'm certainly a lot more vigilant.

She is retired, but not elderly.

Either way, I think it's a lesson for us all.

Good post Kitty. You'll find that it's not Cypriots on the whole that commit these crimes. Without pointing the finger you will find that most of these "petty" crimes are Turkish mainlanders. I spoke to a Turkish friend of mine who works for the police and he reckons if you took the Mainlanders from the prison you would be removing 85% of the inmates. Unfortunately, along with the construction boom came a lot of low paid workers from the Turkish villages... a lot of them are probably out of work now due to the slow down in the sector.

Message 7/ I think that would be a good business venture Nick. 'Rent A Dog'

You could deliver at night and collect in the morning !

Message 8/ Don't tempt me, my husband used to be an electrician, he could always 'wire up' a little light on the gate and not earth it ???? Would we get away with saying it was just a mistake do you think ?
