| In the Cyprus Dialogue (02-09 Jan 09 page 13) the spokesperson for The Peoples Party Rasit Pertev stated that he believed the election timing was due to 2 issues (my summary and paraphrasing). 1) The worsening economic situation and the government spending most of its 2009 budget in 2008 meaning it will encounter huge problems in 2009. 2) They are taking advantage of the uncertainty before the ECJ decision on the Orams case which he said was highly likely to follow the Advocate General recommendations. This will affect not just the Orams but also the GC case against Sercem Construction and Mermet Ali Talat. This will take away the credibility of the CTP's "stand for peace" which is their only reason for being kept in government. Obviously the second proposed reason is more interesting and Machiavellian but it does raise the question why call the election so close to the expected ECJ decision given its importance. Aussie |

| Aussie, It does seem that these situations are being created to put pressure on the negotiators, in order to get them to reach an amicable solution! wyn |

| Paul You would think so but then they must have some reason to believe they have a better chance now rather than at the end of the year or early 2010. Perhaps they are playing the party of peace/ settlement card now as their best chance of victory before it can be eliminated by a failed negotiations or referendum, or an adverse ECJ ruling which could cause a lot of concern and possibly defensiveness locally.
