I've recently returned from a viewing trip to the Aegean Coast of Turkey and am planning to do the same to NC as a comparison. I was REALLY impressed with the local minibus system (dolmus) as it made traveling around the different areas very easy. The buses were frequent and cheap. As I do not envisage being able to buy a car in whichever location I choose to purchase property, it is important that I can rely on public transport. Can anyone give me feedback on this subject please. How do people manage without a car?

Hi AbbyG I can only comment about one route, which is the Kyrenia to Lapta route. I found it works well and cheap. As I say, I am not sure about the other routes.

hi abbyg welcome to the forum i read that you went to the aegean coast where did you go because im there at the moment and you are right the dolmus routes are second to none in turkey and very cheap to get around your answer to your question to get around north cyprus firstly there is bus routes which serve kyrenia and many of the coastal resorts like lapta-alsancak and most of the west coast and also their are routes that cover the east aswell catalkoy-arapkoy even as far as esentepe and talisu but a bit limited service there are also services that run between kyrenia and lefkosa and famagusta you can do this by bus or by shared car service supplied by a firm how this works is by several people share a car going to another town i.e kyrenia to famagusta and they get dropped off where they want to go compared to the bus where it leaves from a set point and arrives at a set point the diffrence in price is very small the bus costs 5ytl where the shared car cost 6ytl hope this helps you regards ukturk

Hi ukturk and ilovecyprus Thank you for your responses. I spent a couple of weeks going around Kusadasi (OK) Altinkum (I HATED that place, would never consider buying a place there) and Bodrum, which I LOVED. Saw a really nice shell house for an unbelievable price with a great sea view, but I was put off by the location, which was Bogazici, (nearer the airport, about 30 kms away from Bodrum itself). The area itself is fab if you have a car, but if you need to rely on public transport it would be a hassle to get to supermarkets/shops/restaurants/beaches etc. A new golf resort is being built in the area and will ensure that it becomes quite sought after in the future, but I'm too nervous to purchase a place with the hope that things will improve 'in the future'. Anyway, back to NC. I'm going to visit in February and hire a car so I can have a good look around. From what I've seen on various websites property looks more expensive in NC, but I want to check out all my options before I make any major decision. I'll also check out the public transport situation once I'm there. Anyway, thanks for your help; I'm sure to have more questions at a later date so no doubt I'll post another question then. Cheers
