The main hunting season is over but the "light" season begins tomorrow (11 Jan 2009)

during "light" season, hunters are not allowed to take dogs with them or shoot rabits,partridges,francolines...basically,they are after migrating birds.

"light" season is total 15 shooting days

11,14, 18, 21, 25, 28 Jan, 1, 4, 8, 11, 15, 18, 22, 25 Feb & 1 Mar 2009

I support both nn and icemans comments re hunting and dogs, there are two dogs tied up in a garden in the village, they are tied up for 10/11 months, ignored by the owners and their children and they are too thin and they look depressed, I wish I could do something but don't know how to go about it..any advice anyone, I dont want to do my usual barnstorming approach as it would only cause more distress.

Problem is Dee, they are kept as working dogs and not pets. They are only needed to work for a couple of months a year. I cannot think of anything you could do about it without causing offence. This is the way hunting dogs have been kept for generations and will take a long time for attitudes to change.

With regards a ban on hunting - you are messing with tradition, and as foreigners do you have the right? If you think some hunters are shooting too close to properties, you should complain to the Hunting association. As for wanting to go for a walk on Sundays - if you are retired you can go any day can't you? If working, then be patient another few weeks and it will be all over.............This is Cyprus not England!!!

Even working dogs need to be treated fair...properly fed, excercised and more important loved.

Being chained to a tree for 11 months and fed on dry bread and scaps is not fair or humane.

It is very common to hear stories about gun dogs running away from their owners on the first day of shooting season..

Look at it this way,if i were a gun dog tied to a tree or caged up for 10-11 months of the year,i would run away at the first chance i get..wouldn't you?

I strongly believe this country needs more up to date laws on animal welfare.

regards banning game shooting

As a Cypriot i have all the right to "mess around" with what you call tradition.

Do you have any idea of the present number of licenced guns and hunters in this small country?

There isn't enough wild game to go around anymore, cant you see?

Times have changed, agricultural chemicals have taken their toll on wildlife as it is,the increasing number of hunters haven't made life any easier on decreasing wildlife either.

What is the percentage of hunters in the population? 3-4%??

There is a much larger percentage of the population who want wildlife preserved..

The governments have ignored the situation till now because they are afraid of loosing votes and much more importand, the revenue from gun & shooting taxes.

Hopefully increasing public pressure and decreasing wildlife will bring them to their senses.

Iceman, I do not say that the dogs are being treated fairly, what I was saying in answer to Dee's "what can I do", is basically - nothing much without causing offence. With regards messing around with tradition, I believe that hunting (hopefully) may be banned one day - but these changes have to come from the Cypriots (who have the right to vote) not foreigners moaning that their Sunday walks are disrupted!! The drought last year ensured a severe shortage of "game" this season, and even the hunting association recommended a ban this year didn't they? But what did the government do? They stated that they couldn't refund the fees collected so it went ahead as planned!! maybe a compromise could be reached - with breeding of game birds and designated areas for this type of hunt? I believe that some of the hunting fee goes towards breeding game birds - has this been successful?

i think with regards to the care of hunting dogs it is all down to education.

your hunting dog is your best mate when properly trained.

hubby takes our giant schnauzer out , and the locals are amazed and all asking when she will be having puppies.

no chance!

i also think that the over development of areas, has done more damage to the wild life than any amount of hunting.

there is nothing wrong with hunting as long as the countryside managemnet is in place.

in fact if it were here ,imagine what it could do for tourism.

She was 13 firestarter and it was the fireworks that finished her, she had a bad heart and was fainting alot and it was Nov4th 2 years ago that her little heart gave out thru fear, she hated the bangs..I cried for months cos my cat had died 2 months before and I missed them so much but I had them cremated and still have their ashes in a little box to be cremated again with me when I go. :(

Good news for hunters!

Small-game hunting season was opened today.

The hunting of wild pigeons, ducks, geese, as well as woodcocks, magpies and local small birds called cikla and fassa are all up for grabs during the small game hunting season.

Hunting of other animals is strictly forbidden and hunters are not permitted to bring their hunting dogs and leather pouches with them.

The hunting season will be open until the 1st of March; hunters being allowed to hunt on Wednesdays and Sundays only.

Unfortunately Turbo some of them do not adhere to the law of not shooting within 500 metres of properties,so do you think they will adhere to the other restrictions? Many people are constantly on the wrong end of the hunters guns, showered with shott on a regular basis.

Firestarter, don't be goosing the neighbour , not very neighbourly of you,.

You may find yourself turning on a spit if the wife gets you before you get the goose.
