As I reach the grand old age of 52 I am currently planning my retirement in 2 years time with a view on having an active retirement in an overseas country.

There are many factors to consider, financial, health, housing, taxes, location, missing close family or friends by moving abroad, new culture, the list is endless............

My question for those who have retired to NC, what came along that you didn't plan for, consider fully, or misjudged completly e.g costs, new culture, weather was too hot, awful neighbours ...............and so forth?

Thanks in advance, kind regards Tony

You're either going to get a long list from people or virtually nothing at all because each person is different.

We started planning our retirement about 5 years beforehand and things were really cheap then. Prices have increased over the past 2 years to a point where some of the time its cheaper to live in the UK.

The culture. In my opinion you have to remember its their Country and you are a visitor even though you plan to live there. You have to learn to be patient and if they say they'll come, they will but don't try to tie them down to a time (or even a day for that matter in some cases).

Its a great place and my advice is learn to live how the locals live and most of all remember its not the UK.

Best wishes

Karen

This poem sums NC life.

FLY in from England to start a new life,

Escaping the rat race, pressure and strife,

Into a country with days full of sun,

Here in the North your new life's begun,

But as soon as you get here you seem to forget,

The reasons you came on that bloody great jet.

You now have a villa and maybe a pool,

And air con as well to help you stay cool,

But it seems most the time you just want to moan,

It does make me wonder, should you be back home?.

Nothing out here gets done straight away,

But it will be sorted, just not today.

No good you cursing and getting irate,

'Cos someone's not come on a given date,

You're in Cyprus now, it's the way that it is,

No good you getting yourself in a tizz.

And while you're out driving you must be aware,

Just slow right on down and take extra care,

Let all the nutters just pass you on by,

If they're in a hurry for their turn to die.

Indictors, well they are not used,

No bloody wonder we end up confused,

They pull out of side roads with hardly a glance,

Just a small gap and they take their chance,

The only thing that they can all use,

Is the motor car's horn which is always abused.

Now for rubbish, litter and trash,

That covers the land like an unwelcome rash,

You often complain about this and the dust,

And the unsightly wrecks just left out to rust.

They must pull their socks up you shout in despair,

But no one is listening they just do not care,

It's no good you bitching, just let it all go,

Join in with the locals and go with the flow.

We are the guests and they are our hosts

This ain't our country but one that we chose.

Living out here is a real easy ride,

You just have to take most things in your stride,

'Cos when it's all over when all's said and done,

Living out here is much better fun,

So if you don't like it and think this is unfair,

Sod off to England and old Tony Blair.

I've put down the things about which you all moan.

If you don't like it here then bugger off home.

Wonderful poem - thank you, if we do go for NC then its being printed and framed!

I should have pointed out that I have lived in SC for 3 years and other parts of the world most of my life so I don't think I will have any cultural empathy issues. Hopefully.

What I was trying to ascertain with my question - did anything you thought you had planned for and not necessarily specific to retirement in NC, come as a big surprise when you actually moved/retired?

For example, the thought of just spending most of the day with your partner was not considered an issue in the planning stage instead of working all day, but in reality was either an absolute nightmare or better than you anticipated

So Paul Broderick from East Hull - what do you mean by mancs then??

Not us Mancunians I hope!! Perhaps we might start another War of the Roses!!

Seriously though, I do happen to be a Mancunian and a Manchester City fan (there is more than just one of us these days).

Slipped up in the early seventies when I went to Leeds University - but we all make mistakes!!

paul 90,

tony h is a liverpool fan and i just thought it would be funny if he bought his house in cyprus and a couple of mancs moved in next door, pretty similar to a couple of black and whites moving next door to me.whats it like playing on top of an old tripe factory.

I also support Grimsby Town and live just along the coast from there, however I have looked at this thread as I also am really very interested in the resulting answers to these very good questions which pretty much sum up the things that I too would like to know.

Batterboy,

Was the question, "how many town fans are there on this forum"?

Just for you Grimbsy fans..............taken from the Red and White Kop website, enjoy........................................

There was also the F.A. Cup tie against Grimsby. The game was won by half time and the final score was 5-0 to the Reds. In the 2nd half the Kop amused themselves by chanting to the Grimsby supporters ‘Sing when you’re fishing. You only sing when you’re fishing.’ The theme continued as the Kop began renaming many of the Liverpool players. Kenny Dalglish transformed into Kenny Dogfish and Jimmy Case became Jimmy Plaice.

To get back to your original question. Remember that any UK pensions will still be taxed in the Uk and that your old age state pension will be frozen and not index linked.

I have recently been told if you spend 6 months + out of the UK your pension is taxed at 'only' 6 % ??
