well not surprised at the princes namecalling our friends from overseas - wasnt Philip ( a greek himself) guilty of accusing some of our friends of badworkmanship on a factory visit a few years ago. Like father like son I guess.

A little while ago there was a conflict between Azerbijan and Armenia. The reporter referred to one side as Azeris. Racialist? I am referred to as a Brit, it doesn't bother me, is it racist to refer to a Turk rather then a Turkish person? Pakistan means land (stan) of Paki (pure) , that is, pure in a religious sense. The shortened version has acquired racist connations through its use by skinhead gangs of the 1980's in the UK. I did see some Asian designer clothing a couple of years ago with the logo PAK1, seemingly worn with pride. See this link, http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2004/feb/25/race.world Lem

Y'know what - bottom line - we all live on this planet, we are lucky to live on this planet, and we will (in all probability, despite our 'intelligence', destroy this planet). We're human, we're us. Shame we can't share this planet... Eventually, this is what will destroy us/it.

Well thank you Karakum5c for bringing some well reasoned argument to the discussion. You have put a lot of thought into your comments and it is painfully obvious that you don't quite understand what is being discussed. If you wish to contribute further to this thread, can you try putting some reasoning into your comments explaining why you feel like the way you do and stop writing in capitals. Lem

| To be pedantic for truth's sake - cad Hewitt could not have been Harry's dad, the relevant dates don't match. Prince Philip was born in Corfu, but his genetic make up is more Dane than Greek. Seems sad that the media is trying to damage the royals, remember they indirectly 'did' for Harry's mum. | Mmmm / GLW215 BBC says it was the IRA - no mention of 'provos'. Murder happened on 27/8/79, same day as 18 soldiers were killed by a booby trap bomb at Warrenpoint. Sad days, glad they're over, well in Ireland, at least. |

With all due respect, Lem, Northern Ireland is a part of the United Kingdom; sterling is their currency, red are their letterboxes, etc etc. As a person from Dublin, Ireland (what is to often wrongly referred to as 'Southern Ireland', but what is the 'Republic of Ireland'), I know nothing of any of these crimes, nor do I want to. In Dublin, (the Capital), we live in peace. And we want to extradite the 'hard-core' folk who try to destroy our Island (by which I mean the Republic; the North belongs to the UK). This is a personal opinion. Y

Prince Charles is accused of calling his Asian friend Sooty!! The fact he has done so for many years and has been accepted by said friend is irrelevant to that pathetic minority!!!!!! As soon as the sad members of the fifth estate find out it becomes a cause for starting ww3. I hope that through this thread that Yvonne has learnt something about the much criticised MM and that we all learn from Lem as a moderator he can be diplomatic and create good discussion at the same time.

A Turkish friend of mine en route to Scotland via Heathrow ran into trouble with a Pakistani member of airport staff, when she said she thought he was "Paki" He was furious, but she had no idea why as she thought it was (it is, isn't it?) just short for Pakistani. I explained to her it was thought to be offensive, but really, why? Calling the Chinese shops "Chinkies" sounds more so but it is almost a kind of affectionate term. The French call us Queen Mother was said to have referred to the Europeans as "Wops & Dagos" and thought the Common Market would never work, or so it is reported.

Tiggy, This was a good thread til you joined in with your usual garbage. The thread still applies regarding name calling. As I previously stated, nobody was bothered for a number of years that P. Charles and his friend used what others percieve as derogatory names. Then someone like yourself suddenly finds this name is being used and wishes to make an issue of it. There is nothing offensive to anybody here until someone decides to print on the front page of a Red Top, then the idiots make it into a major problem. Throughout the world different socities have names for others, the French call UK citezens le Ros Beefs (or something like). I remember from a visit to Australia to see family we were called all sorts of names not repeatable here but they also had names for people from Queensland - bananna benders, those from Victoria were Mexicans etc. Anyone from Canberra should just go away!! Everyone has "nicknames" some better than others. Just accept it!!!!

This "friend" who has put up with being called Sooty may have felt unable or unwilling to challenge the future King, who was able to cuckold his polo pal's wife under his nose remember. Doesn't make it right. Some posters on here are dinosaur remnants of the past, soon to be extinct, hopefully. |

Dear Yvonne - re 29/32 I'm quite sure that you meant nothing bad - I was explaining a possible explanation for Princess Margaret's outburst. The ironic thing is he was in favour of Unification of Ireland and the idiots who blew him up probably didn't realise that ! re msg 30 glw215. I said the Prov. IRA carried out the murder, yes... If you have an alternative opinion, and facts to back it up ... re Tiggy msg 44 - you seem to be the self appointed adjudicator of what should be posted, or not , on this board.. you should perhaps consider starting one of your own ;) .. I can't believe the irony of the "should I resign?" thread passed over such an intelligent head ! You managed to TRY to pick fights with at least three people on this thread.. I wonder why....

Some of this is political correctness gone mad. If Charlie boy and his mate have nicknames [and do not take offence at the other using the respective name], then why do others poke their noses in?? It is not what is said, but how it is said. One of my business partners is East African Asian, and we constantly joke with each other such as "keep your eyes off the white/brown [as applicable] women. Neither of us takes offence at the other's comments because no offence is meant. It is a JOKE and we take it as such. Equally I have to say that he receives comments from others which aren't meant in the same light, and instantly recognises the difference. P.S. How did this thread get on to the Troubles in NI ?? A lot of bad things went on by both sides, let's sincerely hope all that is now in the past. P.P.S. I have heard a whisper that Prince Phillip is going to be a UN Goodwill Ambassador because he gets on so well with all nationalities !!!

Arthur I totally agree that many people find the namecalling a little fun and we all get banter about our colour/nationalities. We caucasian english are no different. The problem is if this happens in the workplace be warned. Employers have to have policies in this respect and non complaince can mean disciplinary action also an individua can make a case of it for discrimination. Well in the UK of course. So whilst it is sometimes acceptable fun it can have serious consequences even job losses through discipline and compensation for those effected. Keep it out of work and of course off the football pitches.

Dear Dee, re 70 what you might call "rubbish".... we both live in a free country...right?!.. If the original poster asked to end the thread, that would not be unreasonable. Imagine if Tiggy (myself - corrected and apologised for upsetting Yvonne - unintentionally) and you hadn't posted, this topic would still be on thread ... Can we please see how it goes?... if a thread was resulting in rudeness or REALLY upsetting members, I'd agree.. If it bores everyone it would die a natural death, anyway... !

re mess 35: YVONNE read your history books and stand by them. Ireland has 32 counties and always will. Not all IRISH people believed in a violent solution, and the greatest workers for peace on our island were Trimbull and John Hume. Also call me a mick or a paddy anytime, I was brought up with good banter...!

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, well it is not only me that thinks you are full of it. I do not pick fights on anyone. Sometime the truth is hard to take. If a thread starts off on a specific subject I feel it should stay as close to it as poss......nearly always goes off to an Irish slant with certain bigots. I can imagine your voice is as boring as your typing. Is there a need for a barrage of replies to each thread you usually interrupt ? Kindest regards, Padraig O'Connoloin.

This thread should be closed down immediately as all it is being used is by some people to promote racist, bigoted stereotypes and insulting coments while pretending to have a debate.

Dear Tiggy re 78, suggest you click on your own profile..read your own posts and you would draw a different conclusion.. most of your posts are tellling someone they are "boring, stupid, etc.," !! Fairy re 77 .. N.I + GB = UK, OK.. ? .. I refer you to the "Good Friday agreement" and the fact that the peoples of Ireland voted to accept this and Eire removed it's claim to the six counties in it's constitution.

I am sorry but it is out and out rasism, because the person who is so called does not object makes it no less an insult.

The armed forces are full of politically incorrect lads. Many of them are good honest working class lads who just want to fit in with their mates and call a spade a spade, a raghead a raghead and a jundie a jundie. In many cases they risk their lives fighting these people and being blown-up by them on our behalf - they are hardly likely to hold them in very high regard. Many of us will recall that we were happy to call Germans krauts, Japanese Japs and more recently Argentinians Argies. Where's the difference? Thats the way it is in the military and the royal princes are no different than any other servicemen in wanting to fit in and be accepted by their peers. When the chips are down and the bullets are flying you are not fighting for Queen and country - you fight for your self and your mates. It's called Esprit de Corps. I'm sure this view won't be popular but it needs saying IMHO.

Well said TRNC Vaughan, Spot on.! Guess its quite difficult to be politically correct when you are under fire, fighting for the chattering classes back home. Thats when you find out what real mates are, be they Jocks, Taffys, Pakis ,Brummies, Geordies etc.etc. People discriminate, bullets don't. wyn

Point well made Vaughan, and I think we all understand what you say, however the good old 'Love thy Neighbour' with Jack Smethurst will never be repeated on British TV even though its point was to show how bigotted Jack's charater was. Prince Charles has not moved on, allegedly. If he has then good on him. If I called someone Sooty today in the UK I could well find myself in court.

No1 Doyen: "Too many cases of discimination at work in the courts nowadays." Too right, Bill. They should all settle out of court for a tidy sum like I did (for direct sex discrimination against a male). People shouldn't be afraid of using the justice system as long as they know what they're doing.
