Just logged on and saw Wyn's thread re the forum. There were some good points in there so I thought I would comment. What do I find? ''thread closed serving no purpose''. I go to the dog poisoning one to see if any further ideas have developed overnight. What do I find? ''thread closed serving no purpose''

On the wyn thread Suntanman msg 29 and bradus msg 36 were spot on.

I am not prepared to set my alarm at 3am to rush to a thread to get a comment in before it is closed through some nonsensical reason. If you don't like it, don't read it, don't contribute to it.

Mods. please stop closing threads for the above reason. I am sure I can find numerous threads that are serving no purpose. It is very subjective reasoning. If the members don't like a thread they don't contribute and it dies. Delete posts by all means if they breach rules.

You can't stop people seeing 'red' on occasion and 'letting loose'. It's human nature. Contribute to what you want and ignore the rest. grrrrrr

Hi Chessman

I'm sorry you weren't able to comment on the posts you mentioned, but I closed them because the only purpose they were serving was to insult other members (yes, and moderators).

If you feel you have a comment to make about how the Forum could be better run, then please email Izzet with you thoughts. The thread started by Wynyardman should, in hindsight, have been closed down from the start a) because it was against the "Forum Rules" and b) as I posted, it was a platform for the insults to start flying, I therefore believe it really was 'serving no purpose'.

Have a good day

Four moderators were making comments on Wyns thread. Also many members. Some of these members were drawn back to this forum by this important topic.

You are not just closing threads, you are imposing censorship. This is an abuse of power. You are ruining this forum.

Do the moderators not see that. Too many cooks spoil the broth is an old wise saying that comes to mind.

Why close the thread, why not just delete offending posts.

I see puppylover has resigned. Also I believe AJ. If you lose another 10 amongst your number, this board may become half interesting again.

LTD.

Thanks for that, good response.

All in all I think the mods. do a great job. On the Wyn thread, Izzet's comments were spot on.

I would not be presumtious to tell anyone how they they could run a forum any better. I was merely venting my frustration at moderators for not allowing me or other members the opportunity to comment.

I will have a good day, thank you. It's Friday and I look forward to young Bill (No1 Doyen) making us laugh! Try and have a peaceful day.

Geoff & Bill, some post are made to get a reaction, the one in question certainly got the response it aimed to get. I know Jean tries not to be drawn into an argument, but a person can only hold back for so long. I agree with Karen (ltd), it should have been closed as soon as it started. But then members would say that other members are being picked on, the moderators are damned if they do & damned if they don't. I admit I got the hump with the post & did cut & paste from a previous post to prove a point. Let us all get back to civil postings. On a lighter note, I do not have to go to work today so I will not spend all day seeing what is going on here, Jean will have left me a list of jobs to be done. All the best. Paul

I think that you have to let a thread develop.

Someone starts of a new topic. Someone takes offence to that topic (we're all human!) and contradicts the previous post. Someone else joins in and agrees with the first poster. Then someone else joins in and agrees with the second poster. Someone then says "moderators-close this thread!". Then someone will post constructively and will want to keep the thread going. You then have a situation where all hell has let loose. Someone wants the thread shut down, someone is having a go at someone else, someone is trying to get a debate going. What is to be done? I would let the thread run and if someone was being really offensive then I would delete the post. Threads should only be closed when they are off topic or there is a continual stream of offensive remarks. Finally if the persons who actually want to continue to debate the subject matter why not carry on off board?

I agree chessman...."thread closed serving no purpose" is an almost meaningless excuse.

Some of these threads have had dozens of responses including from mods....so how can they be serving no purpose.

However...at least the thread is still there albeit closed.

Someone started a thread late last night titled "Nige is banned".

I responded with some constructive observations, and was hoping to follow up this morning to see what other members thought.

It has disappeared altogether.......no idea who or why!

Yes, it is very frustrating. Mods. are human after all and their views will be subjective and that is understandable. The rules are there for all of us and it would make life easier for them if they just followed the rules per se.

Maybe the mods should just read a post.

If they are thinking of taking action or deleting.

Go away and have a cup of tea.

Go back read the post again.

Take a deep breath.

Then act as they see fit.

Obviously all moderators do not act the same way.

Some moderators close threads that other moderators are taking part in.

This cannot be correct can it?

Good points. It appears that, so far, we are all in agreement here. I do believe that if the rules are clear and specific, then all the mods. need do is follow them. Posts can then be removed, hopefully, without a 'song and dance'.

There will be instances, I am sure, where perhaps it is not 'clear cut' but in those circumstances I have no problem accepting the decision.

It has been mentioned several times in the above postings, why cant the offensive or off topic posts just be deleted and let the thread continue, there are definitely enough moderators around to make sure that none slip by.

Come on guys (and gals) dont let the power get to you.

Just delete the post or the offensive sentence and notify the poster why .

Its getting a bit OTT here lately.

Hi all

I have just re-read Wyn's thread and would like to make the following comments.

The thread was started at 18:54 and was finally closed at 07:17. During those times 13 threads were either edited, deleted or were from moderators trying to calm the situation, as insults had started. The post at 05:51 was actually complaining that the thread had been allowed to continue.

I think the thread had been allowed to "develop", and I did more than go away and have a cup of tea - I went to bed. When I logged on this morning I still felt the same ie. it had run it's course and was serving no purpose, which is why I closed it.

Let's get back to more interesting topics - please.

Sorry but I do find this 'interesting'. One of the advantages of being a member here is that I am allowed to introduce topics. If any one else is uninterested, then they don't take part. The point is your views are, as are anyone elses, subjective. So the rules need to be clear to obviate that. Just keep deleting the offensive posts and then the thread will become confusing and die.

I also believe as has been mentioned previously, that the title of the thread should leave no one in doubt about the topic. It it is clearly offensive, delete it from the outset.

I posted a new thread last night entitled "Nige has been banned" which is true. I set out the reasons for the ban as Nige cannot do it himself. He was banned for answering questions on this BB by members about Nige's BB and providing a link (when requested by another member). Got up this morning and my two posts, and cronos's response have gone, disappeared, like magic. I asked in that thread "WHAT RULE DID NIGE CONTRAVENE" AND I will ask again. I just wanted an answer so that we are all in no doubt that there is another rule (as yet to be written) that we must observe. After all it is Nige banned this week for contravening an unwritten rule, next week it could be you or I? I think we need to know chaps and chappesses. Kind regards to all.

Morning Kay......was it just me and you on there before it was pulled?

I'm really struggling to understand the reasoning behind it myself !

Two slightly different takes on a relevant topic, and not a cross word between us....where's the harm?

Morning Cronos. Shucks.... I knew I shouldn't have had that lie in this morning! LOL - Bizzare eh? I cannot understand it either. All I ask for was an explanation as to which rule he contravened???? This is still not clear.

livethedream if you think that was a insult directed at me, i think you have misconstrued the reply it was all in banter, I personally think that there are a lot of people on here that do not like wyn and will knock him regardless of what his input to the forum.

My personal opinion that's all...........

I believe that everyone should be allowed to express their point of view, no one should be allowed to resort to personal insults. Posts saying how bad other members spellings are is ludicrous, and should be stopped. Is it such a big deal . This is not a kindergaten, everyone grow up.

What about banning people for, say, two weeks, if they swear on here. If they get two short bans they are banned completely on the third. Would that work?

hill bill kay and geoff oh i have missed a lot the last i saw was about 10pm so i dont know what hppened after that. However you have all said better than I ever could its absurd. Sometimes I have be followiing something and logged of only to fid it had all disappeared. Wyn was asking a question one we all want answers to, a lot was in banter as they all know each other so well. I am sad puppy lover has now gone but as have said before its a thankless job. If Wyn was rude to someone Im sure it had good reason. Why cant you see who has been loyal to you and make an apology and exeption.

NN

You state in MSG 26 that a post by someone was deleted. As this user is new they have to have their posts authorised by the moderators. I have only just authorised it, so is this a second posting of the question?
