As if by magic:

The ownership of many properties is disputed across the island, and particularly in northern Cyprus, with many thousands of claims to ownership of properties from people displaced during the events of 1974. Purchase of these properties could have serious financial and legal implications. The European Court of Human Rights has ruled in a number of cases that owners of property in northern Cyprus prior to 1974 should continue to be regarded as the legal owners of that property. Purchasers could face legal proceedings in the courts of the Republic of Cyprus, as well as attempts to enforce judgements from these courts elsewhere in the EU, including the UK. Potential purchasers should also consider that a future settlement could have consequences for property they purchase in Cyprus (including possible restitution of the property to its original owners).

The leaders of both communities have agreed to re-start settlement negotiations. Property issues will clearly form a key part of those negotiations. Until those negotiations are concluded and a comprehensive settlement agreed, the issues and risks identified above will continue to apply and buyers should exercise due caution.

If you believe that Cyprus will be united one day as one island where Greeks & Turks live in peace and prosperity side by side, then you should be worried about your property but there is as much chance of that happening as Scotland winning the World Cup.

Actually I think there's much more chance of reunification, and I follow politics more than football.

Depends on what your definition of 'reunification' is.

Does anyone honestly beleive that a tidal wave of Greek owners will come from the south to there old properties, demand their demolition and sue for compensation from EU & TC citizens.

Israel a country built almost 100% on stolen land, does anyone here believe the palestinians will return with bulldozers and for compensation one day.

Lets all get real the best any previous owner is going to get is very limited compensation because the Greek & Turkish governments are both in the same boat as they each will be liable for large amounts of property they have aquired and not paid for

For Goodness sake they are CYPRIOTS.. not Greeks.. and the properties in Q are THEIRS.. not "their old" properties.

What have the "Greeks got to do with this ....? It is TURKEY that has been found responsible for preventing owners from using their properties at the ECHR.

THAT is getting real..

IF the RoC govt have played fair.. and we will see soon enough a formula will be worked out.

My guess - it will be SIMILAR to Annan - land handed back to the south -with a time period / limit set on freedom of movement, autonomy for TCs, major TR troops withdrawals and a speeding up of EU chapters towards TR accession to the EU.

Stumbling block?... What happens to the GCs' properties where they are constrained from returning..leases may be..

The bottom line in this world is money, not who is in the right!

Politicians will decide what course of action to take for self interest only!

Everyone will agree to a solution which requires them doing very little!

The Annan peace plan or something similar will be the best they will come up with.

Maybe when they're strong enough they will do. In the meantime thay can just lob rockets into Israel, putting the lives of women and chilsdren at risk. Hardly a valid analogy.

Fire Starter,I did consider there are a few such as you, but as the majority of us are on exchange land I left it as "the rest of us" rather than making an essay of the title. Lucky you.

Firestatrter....presumably then you bought Pre-74 Turkish title ?

We did the same, but 2 years later we are still awaiting our PTP and kocan.

How long did you have to wait?

And just remind me....was yours for a purely domestic property or a property from which you run a business?

Thanks.

cronos

we waited 18 months for our ptp.

just chased it up every month!

yes ours is a domestic property, an old village house with 3 other buildings on the land which we are renovating. (the kochan says these are grain stores/barns)

my kennels have been built since getting our kochan not before.

so nothing to do with the kochan or ptp at all.

Our PTP came through recently after waiting patiently for FIVE years. Our property is Pre 74 Turkish Title and over 2 donums. Dont despair!

People are still getting pre-74 PTPs, but it's taking longer because the land is more valuable than GC-owned properties and they want to be more sure about the people who will end up remaining in north Cyprus after all the dust has settled over ownership.

Have emailed to enquire our PTP applications progress and received the mandatory "its with the Military". Have been informed that a visit in person will get a more up to date inspection of your file rather than a click on the computer records,is this correct and if so any directions to the PTP office would be appreciated.Apologies if this has been covered before.
