neilhodgin, re msg 23. More fool you paying that sort of money to watch reserves,a few years ago i was conned into going to watch manu vs arsenal at trafford in the semi final of said carling cup(or whatever) cost me £140 for the trip(discounted price huh)5 hours drive got home at 12.30 ,missed some of 1st half and goal due to traffic and then finally witnessed a farce.

After paying that money Both teams played mainly their reserves ( only manu player i knew was Richardson),in the second half when the subs came on even the fans were singing"who the f**kin hell are you"

If teams like Manu and Arsenal dont want to field a decent team to entertain the fans who have paid good money and some travelled a long way (especially manu fans)then dont f**kin enter the competition in the first place.

You used to have to field the strongest available team, but of course that was when players were men playing a mans game not the bunch of millionare ballerinas who are too busy parkin the Bentley !

football is changing so fast, what with a trip to japan and the usual europe, always challenging for the everything, internationals, you have to use your whole squad. Most on tues were full internationals and it's good to see the future is bright. And its always nice to add to the silver ware we already have this season. You say you were conned into going to old trafford, did someone force you to pay the said £140 or was it you were so excited that the money only came into it after the game, when you realised that you did'nt enjoy yourself?I suggest you set off earlier next time if you don't want to miss anything.I bet you left early as well?

you got a piont there bach but thats how all the top teams treat this competion, sad yes but in the big big world of the premiership the carling cup or whatever its called is treated with comtempt. i think any club qualifying for the champions league should be exempt end of story. but it goes deeper every club outside the top five in the prem are shitting themselves at relegation from it , look what harry redknap as just said about spurs playing man utd sat in f.a cup "we will play a weakend side at old trafford more important game tuesday against spurs in league"

i rest my case

Re msg 27 nielhodgkin. The con i refer to was the fac that i paid good money to watch a cup semi final played in front of 70,000 other gullables hoodwinked into witness a reserves training session !I think you actually know what i meant but judging by the content of the latter part of your post i very much doubt you have grasped the context in which it was written !

PS "I suggest you set off earlier next time if you don't want to miss anything"

If we had arrived 3 hours befor the kick off it is unlikely that we would have missed anything.

PPS. As this was my first and last trip to Old Trafford it generally pales into insignificance as one of lifes experiences and a lesson learnt, IMHO.

Harita, would you believe born and bred in greater Manchester. I come from a family who have been fans of United all their lives and I bought my sons up to be the same and they are bringing their children up to be United fans also. Have to admit though. My sons do not live in Manchester, their only association with it is me.

A Primary Teacher explains to her class that she is a Liverpool fan.

She asks her students to raise their hands if they too are Liverpool fans.

Everyone in the class raises their hand except one little girl.

The teacher looks at the girl with surprise and says, 'Mary, why didn't you

raise your hand?'

'Because I'm not a Liverpool fan,' she replied.

The teacher, still shocked, asked, 'Well, if you are not a Liverpool fan, then who are you a fan of ?'

'I am a Man Utd fan, and proud of it,' Mary replied.

The teacher could not believe her ears. 'Mary, why, pray tell, are you a Man Utd fan?'

'Because my mum is a Man Utd fan, and my dad is a Man Utd fan, so I'm a Man Utd fan too!'

'We ll,' said the teacher in an obviously annoyed tone, 'that is no reason for you to be a Man Utd fan

What if your mum was a prostitute and your dad was a drug addict, what would you be then?'

'Then,' Mary smiled & said I'd be a LIVERPOOL fan

re msg 33. belly, its called rotation. And if you think any of the so called big 4 would field a first team 11 in the carling cup, then it probably explains you paying £140 for 1 game.

re msg 16 - i moved from my home town to live in manchester BECAUSE of United. i spent ten years on the terraces, missing very few games and travelled home and away, uk and europe plus a tour to the states and the 99 cup final. i can count paddy crerand as a friend along with several current players. i dont need to justify myself to any ABU, (thats anyone but united) but happy to answer your question. i was amongst a small group of dedicated die hard reds who created a lot of the songs that are still sung home and away so my concience is clear. i lived on the chester rd opposite the gorse hill ph. the postcode is m16 ora. we would not be the biggest club in the world without support from other towns and cities, tickets are obtainable if you try hard enough. my st was in stretty t2. nuff sed.

We saved Alex Ferguson from the sack and we were 3 minutes away from doing that in 1990 fa cup final by drawing 3 3 then lost the replay 1 0.

Lucky man utd.Alex Ferguson has been a great manager ever since.

Crystal Palace f.c. the number 1 in South London.

Id rather be in relegation and promotion battles.Where y see the real side of football !

I lived just off the centre of Middleton till I was 13 then moved to Boarshaw. Went to Moorclose school. Didn't know too many people from Langley as that built mainly for people from the central Manchester area.

Just watched Paddy Crerand take a call on his phone-in program on MUTV from a caller in Cyrpus. Paddy remarked that a friend (sounded like a neighbour) moved recently to Cyprus to live and then joked that it was probably to get away from him.

I just then remembered this thread. Entertaining chap but much better footballer than guru. In the 60's the saying was that when Crearand plays well, Utd play well. Every time he joins on the commentary we should have had so many penalties and so many of the opponents sent off. Oh, and our players are never off-side.

Anyway he's a good laugh.

Since the Glazers took over the club by purchasing all the issued share capital of Man Utd plc, it is now in the hands of the Gs' vehicle named Red Football or something similar. I'm not sure whether it exists as even a private limited company. Therefore no marketable (in the sense of an open market) value exists for these.

I did buy those at float and sold with about 80% profit thinking I'd done well, but missed out on the real gains.

Is football the new religion?

A few questions from some one that has no interest in football:

1: how many of the posters on this thread go to church on a regular basis?

2: how many of the posters on this thread believe in religion?

3: does football dominate your life?

4: are you addicted to football and if so what would happen if football was taken away from your life?

5: is there the equivalent of the AA for football addicts?

This should be interesting.

More - even if you could buy any they'd be worthless unless it's a controlling interest as the Glazers could anything they like to swizzle you. And I believe they would. They have a reputation for financial indiscretions (if not utter fraud) as long from my house in Surrey to Manchester!

Anyway, rowlo, what is your interest in this?

AlsancakJack -

I've gone to football matches off and on from c. 1965 starting at Old Trafford during a visit. I'm not the complete fanatic type but I've seen many who are. September gone we (the missus and kids included) booked into a hotel 3 mins from Old Trafford on Friday to watch the Sat. game - my son's birthday treat. Meeting the rest of the fans in the bar on my own I was there for 2 hours chatting away. There's a common bond - MUFC is a religion and not that new.

Some fans stay depressed for many days over a defeat - me? I go and write a piece of software that I'd been meaning to, so as to take my mind off it!

An old man I knew very well in my local died recently - he had the MU emblem on his grave stone just like the one on his wife's!

I contribute regularly to a football forum and I see some guys there who practically live on those boards day & night.

Thanks for your reply and I think you have in part answered some of my questions. Firstly I think everyone has to have a passion in their life and if not then I guess they must lead mundane lives. But the big question is do you regard football as a 'religion'?

I come from Hull but have followed utd since the 74/75 season when they where in the old second division and managed by "the doc".I still say that the side that won the second division that year where the most entertaining team to watch that i have ever seen.Players like Gordon Hill,Steve Coppell the two Greenhoffs,"super sam" and Hull born Stuart Pearson.

It was ten bob to get in "the shrine" then and two pence on the bus from victoria station. We used to buy a two pence platform ticket from Hull Paragon hide on the train then when we got to Manchester Victoria jump the barrier.Worked every time.Still go to a few games now but its not the same at old trafford any more. Two many heavy handed stewards and corporate facilities stopping the true fans purchasing tickets.

But i do still get those pangs in the stomach every time i watch my favourite football team.I dont suppose they will ever go away (i hope not anyway)Back at the top was the original posting which is where utd are,

Don't see myself as especially qualified to answer your question. But I'll make a stab:

Even though I'm no longer what you may call religious, I was brought up as a Buddhist and believe that all religions have a very important role to play in early moral development, teaching you to differentiate good from evil. After that I'm not sure that it has that much value, not to me anyway.

Football on the contrary does no such thing - it almost seems to do the opposite. Sportmanship is almost absent unlike in games such as golf and how cricket used to be. In football it seems nowadays the philosophy appears to be win at any cost and everything revolves around money.

I see no connection/parallel; people use the expression "to do something religiously" and they're really referring to the obsessive/compulsive behaviour but I don't think there are too many people who enjoy/observe religion in that fashion outside of the men of the cloth.
