| Have to say, very pretty village, but a bit surreal I always think. Not typical Cypriot at all as it has turned into what I would imagine a rural English village to be like - but with the sunshine and beautiful flowers and views. Acacia Avenue, Poppy Steps - for goodness sake! Interesting but not somewhere I would like consider as being good for restaurants or shops. If you have ever watched league of gentlemen - you might experience a bit of a surreal moment there - 'local shop for local people' springs to mind. Whenever we go the place is deserted and you almost sense that the inhabitants have scurried away behind to observe from behind lace curtains, the unwelcome visitors. Very nice to have a wander round, but don't expect to be welcomed with open arms. Never experienced that yet, with the exception of one very nice man we came across one day who was willing to have a chat. But, perhaps we have just been unlucky. Please don't get me wrong I am not trying to be unkind but if you imagine Dibley transported to TRNC, with lots of sunshine and bouganvillea and geraniums then you are not far off mark. |

| Karmi / Karaman is certainly a place apart from the rest of North Cyprus - and an interesting result of 'restoration'. It shows you can restore buildings, but restoring 'authentic atmosphere' is another thing altogether. I'm afraid us Brits are very efficient at moving to foreign climes and re-creating Southend (or South Kensington) in the sun! By all means, see what has been achieved, and enjoy the unique environment. Then, drive out again into the real North Cyprus, before Tubbs spots you! |
