Cyprus Airways seeks damages from Turkey

By FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE ONLINE STAFF 22.JAN.09

Cyprus Airways said it wants to be compensated for damages caused by Turkey prohibiting Greek Cypriot planes from flying in its airspace.

Since 1974 the national carrier has been unable to fly into skies controlled by Turkish occupation forces in northern Cyprus.

Cyprus Airways also suffered heavily in 1974, when the Turkish invasion wiped the old Nicosia airport from the map, the airstrip, with an abandoned Cyprus Airways jetliner on the tarmac, has been left to decay in the buffer zone.

"We have taken steps and asked the finance minister to take Cyprus Airway’s request to the EU so that our losses can be compensated," Cyprus Airways spokesperson Kyriacos Kyriacou told Reuters.

It is not immediately clear how much compensation Cyprus Airways' is seeking to claim.

"Clever Buggers"..

Example.. flying from LCA to Moscow on a CY Airway "bus", one has to go "around" TR.. "forbidden to fly over...

On the code share Aeroflot flight - no problem - overfly TR

Flight is an hour longer with CY Airways...

Example two - flying ex LCA to UK... flt cannot overfly TR - long way to go west before northings can be made AFTER TR....

Lots of wasted fuel and NOT very "Green"...

OK. so before May 1 2004, if I wanted to go to Istanbul I was forbidden to go via Ercan / Tymbou by the "rump" RoC - can I "sue" them ;) ?

Why would the RoC think the EU should assist them in their claim - TR isn't in the EU, yet. The EU has said that TR "should" open air and sea access to RoC as part of acession talks, but this is on the understanding that it will (may) lead to TR acceptance into the EU in the future. As a non-EU country to date, TR must have the right to decide who may fly within it's air space. Try flying over North Korea and see if the EU can help you after you've been shot down.

Is not having to fly past cyprus land wait take off again and fly back to cyprus doing the same ?

Maybe turkey should turn round and say, no military fights over its airspace and see what the eu has to say about that !

But it signed a "contract" a convention,( legally binding ) that should allow ALL EU member states access to the airspaces / ports, etc.

And the EU said they would ease the isolation of the TC's if they voted "Yes" in 2004. I know one was a contractual obligation and the other was a political commitment but bad faith has repaid bad faith, by the look of it.
