Hi Mikelapta and Alexo... COYB ...

Do you remember The Golden Vision... I nearly choked on my coffee last night when I turned on Sky and they were broadcasting it again (in black/white)

Our most famous Scot and a great player would you agree.

I remember a few years earlier Everton were interested in Jim Baxter...

terrific player... but he went to Sunderland instead. Some player.

Joseph,coincidence eh?TV so old here,coronation on tomorrow.

I was in Gladys street end Alex rose to a header,God he could climb, scored I think against his brother/cousin.Unforgetable.

Oh here's a story, went out with a girl from Leicester Uni,a few kisses that's all.

Her mum and me worked at EE,East Lancs Road.

What about a passionate kiss every goal Everton score,?I asked.OK she said.

7-1.Good game!!!

This is nearly as bad as when the geordies start talking about football and relive their memories when they went more than three games without losing way back in 1964.

Another nearly season for a so so team who are there or there abouts. Evertron are a good bet to go out of the FA Cup in the semis and finish about 7th in the premiership, and that is worth talking about.

Hi MikelLapta,

Strange coincidence, my two best pals back in the fifties had parents working at the E/Electric. I am not making this up honest, but their names were :

Mr White and Mrs Green. In those days it was rare for us kids to know our pals parents first names but later on I found it was Jim White, but never knew Mrs Green's first name

The 7-1 you mention was that by any chance v Southampton?

Hi Dodger...

Did that bring back memories.

Jim Baxter today would be worth a fortune, beautiful player.

I would call him the Scottish Bobby Moore, he was so cool on the ball.

Alongside George Best, ability wise, IMHO

Joseph..no against Leicester.I think also Everton were on a roll.Southampton low in division came and won 2 nil,

Hey Geordie,I then moved back to Wales, supported Wrexham.

Went to St.James'Park twice.Once Wrexham beat Blythe Spartans, then beat Newcastle. We had to avoid bricks being thrown at us.

Newcastle fans/supporters the worst I've ever seen!!!We were told by the police to hide our scarves, they rampaged through the streets turning over any car.I got to railway station. With the other Wrexham supporters we were herded like animals ,told by a police officer to keep clear of windows until the train crossed the bridge.

I rest my case.

"we hate Bill Shankly and we hate St.John.......

the boys in the Royal Blue jerseys".

Good memories hey Joseph?

Mikellapta, just thinking of your last post and a song pops into my memory bank I have not thought of for 50 years, way back when us kids sneaked under the turnstyles into the boys pen ...or some fat bloke agreed to let me hide in the back of his coat... boys pen, you have to laugh... I think everyone smoked and had had a beer or two and the average age was about 30

Ah well, back to that ditty I mentioned, it began:

After the ball was centred After the whistle blew...

Alehouse got excited... and down the wing he flew

He passed the ball to Vernon... and Vernon passed it back

An' Alehouse took a flying shot and knocked their goalie flat... etc

Better not write the whole rthing out we'll have some whingers whingeing...

Ofcourse if it wasn't Alehouse (Johnny Morrissey) you would sing Alex (Young) or another favourite player

Remember

Joseph, Mikelapta,

Been a blue for many a year but at the moment I am living/working in Jakarta and will be for the next few months then I relocate to Vietnam but the one good thing about both of these countries is the amount of EPL games that are shown. Every premier league game is shown over the weekend, there are 3 channels and they run almost continuously, one of the blessings about this part of the world, they do have their priorities right when it comes to scheduling the matches.

Dodger reference message 5,

I think you are spot on there, a very shrewd manager as he needs to be, as Everton do not have the spending power of a lot of the other clubs, but what he has he seems to spend well and he has a great policy with regards to buying young players and putting them through the academy with the other lads.

When I first signed for Everton as a young kid we had a match between the probables and the possibles (remember that) I was there like 5 minutes and it was usual to have a game like this occasionally pre season at Bellefield. Looking at the probables there was:

Gordon West ..Ray Wilson.. Tommy Wright.. Sandie Brown.. Brian Labone

Howard Kendall.. Alan Ball.. Colin Harvey.. Jimmy Husband.. John Hurst

Joe Royle.. and (Shirley) Derek Temple

I had guys around me like:

Geoff Barnet..and Andy Rankin.. ??? Scott.. ???? Bennet.. Terry Darracot Archie Styles.. Roger Kenyon.. Joe Moran.. ???? Smith.. Gary Jones.. Alan Whittle.. David Johnson.. Mick Lyons ... myself and a couple of others I can't remember.

The manager (Harry Catterick) had his usual morning chat with Bill Shankley while watching the game. Shankley lived in one of the houses that backed onto Bellefield + popped in regularly on his way to Melwood.

Great memories yet I can't recall all the names

Hi Mikel...

We use to call Mick Lyons Bernie... can you guess why?

Mick was what you would call "true blue" his heart certainly was

Going through the buying process. Bit tough but we are getting there.

When I first joined the forum it frightened the life out of me there was so much negativity, but I soon realised for every negative there was a positive... though the negatives seem to hold sway

My wife is a staff nurse in Fazakerley Hospital A+E.

Pleased to see a good percentage of ' True Blues' are in residence in the TRNC. Watched ( together with another half dozen Evertonians )the tricky blues beat Middlesborough on Sunday ,at the Old Mill in Ozankoy. Now bring on United!!!. Met the wife under the clock in the old Goodison Road Stand, she said I only married her for her season ticket.

Hi Rupert, glad you and the lads enjoyed the match Sunday, great result

There are a few reds on here as well, all good lads from back home. Had to laugh last night I called into my brothers (red) cheering Liverpool on v Real and was winding him up about the derby being shown, L'pool v Real as it was hard to decide who had more Spanish players. Had to admit though Liverpool gave them a real lesson, just don't tell r kid I said so

Hi Mike, awrridere laa, yeah have to agree about Saha's misses but don't mind as long as he keeps on netting, it's his fitness that's seems to be the worry, bit of a sick note.

Still, at Wembley so should prove to be a great day... I hope... v M.U.

Speak soon

Whats your thoughts about playing the semi-finals at wembley.I personally dont agree with it as it takes away all the glory of the final,

Hi Paul;

Not sure to be honest, there is no way my lads will let me have their season tickets to try for whatever hairbrained scheme they come with re allocation so I will be stuck in front of tele anyway, but how else do you realise the expectations of the real fans.

Not sure what Man U average gate is say 60k and Everton say 40k and you are looking at 100,000 fans wanting tickets. The only other fair way for me would be semi finals played home and away... what do you think?

I see your team Hull (or are you an exile are having one hell of a season.

I think most neutrals hope you stay up. Your early season form was superb and you set about playing good footy. A credit to you I say.

Mikelapta, Joseph... I'm glad I read this thread because I can give you an update on Mick Lyons! My best friend lives in Perth, Western Australia and his son plays in the under 14's for a team called, (funnily enough), Stirling Lions! Mick is the head coach of the club, he manages the senior side who play on Saturdays, but he makes sure he watches as many junior games as he can on a Sunday. I saw him last year, full head of white/silver hair and he still looks quite fit. Just thought you may be interested!

Hi Bowman... I'm glad you read it too now

Mick was a terrific lad, remember the days when six or seven of the players were local lads in most first division (premier) teams, Mick was a local lad from the Liverpool district and if you ever wanted to know what kind of hero he was to the fans you need do no more than repeat his surname.

He really did have the heart of a lion and he played with that heart on his sleeve. Great lad

Are the team he coaches playing in a pro or amateur league as I could always check it out on the net... Stirling Lions the name of club or just the junior side?

Thanks for the info...

i played for England schoolboys at Goodison 44 years ago. In that team was Alan Whittle and Archie Styles, 2 players you mentioned. Alan was a Scouser and a real comedian who everyone said was going to be the next Dennis Law. He was very good at that age. Archie was a Geordie who played for Everton later and I could never understand a word he said...being a west country lad myself !!

I have always supported Everton since those days and David Moyes has done a fantastic job as manager.

Hi Moonraker,

Great memory to share, you made me laugh when you said you couldn't understand a word he said

I remember Archie, honestly like you cannot understand...injury..maybe.. why he never made it as they say. I recall he played left-half, showing our age, and he had a sweet left foot a la Ryan Giggs. However I'm pretty sure Archie was a Liverpool lad. His cousin ,same surname, used to be a neighbour and his sister married Duncan MacKenzie who is a current neighbour of mine... small world.

Lovely player Duncan, played under Cloughie at Forest, Leeds, Anderlecht before Billy Bingham brought him to Goodison, the fans loved him. I'll check with Dunc when I see him?

Any other scousers you recall from your team?

Hi Mikelapta,

Thinking about Walton area where you lived as a kid... we used to walk from County Rd (runs from Kirkby-Ormskirk) many a saturday morning to the Reo for the saturday matinee... cost a tanner, if you couldn't get in round the back,we'd walk home to save the bus fare so we could get a bag of chips and a jublee... the only picture house where you would find 300 kids watching a movie and about 10 had paid

Wet saturdays we'd do the same but go Queensie (swimming pool) or Nogsey in N'Green cos they had a bigger pool.

Did you ever go on the Royal Iris over to New Brighton?

My big sister would take us kids a couple of times in the summer and once we even went in the open air pool, trying to get your keks down and cossy on behind a towel

Great memories

Hi Joseph,

Duncan Mackenzie was a superb footballer who i watched many times.

The Styles I knew was nicknamed Archie but his real name was Arthur. He definitely was a Geordie and played in Everton's first team when he was about 20ish. He was a left half (midfielder !) . Alan Evans played in our team and when he signed for Liverpool from Wolves was the first 100,000 pound teenager. Our goalie was pretty good too...Peter Shilton !!

Hi Moon...

We definately agree on the names for our left half, I'll ask Duncan when I see him, who I now think does a radio broadcast for Radio Merseyside so no doubt will be working because of the L'Pool and Man U match?

Some result for Liverpool winning 4-1 at Old Trafford

By the time Evans came to Liverpool I was well out of football (injury when 18)

Am I right in saying Beckham is now trying to beat Shilton's Eng cap record?

Can you recall whom you played against, their players, score etc, thinking back to those you have mentioned in your team I have a feeling it was some eleven you were in

Hi Joseph,

I don't think Becks will catch Shilton's caps record. From memory he has just equalled Bobby Moore on 105; Shilton I think collected 125.

We had a very strong schoolboy side and were unbeaten against Scotland twice,at Wembley and Goodison. Wales at Ninian Park, Eire at Northampton and West Germany in Berlin. Some great memories !!

Hi Moon...

As I thought... some team

It's a long shot... apologies in advance... I noticed your age on profile and you are 3/4 years older than myself. I attended a college in Romsey (Hants) in the early sixties and I recall as a 14 year we were allowed to go watch England v Scotland youth match at the dell. (Southampton ground)

I think it was an u18's match...

Couldn't possibly... could it
