Painted as one of bad boys in George Bushe's list of nations he would most like to destroy, Syria has made overtures to be more open and to help to broker a peace solution in the Middle East. I have been in Syria a number of times over the past 5 yeas and found the people friendly and suprisingly a lack of guns on the street, never felt threatened or uncomfatable. I found the people open and willing to discuss the Middle East situation. One example i had a discussion 'inside' the Umyiad Mosque in Damascas with a group of Iranian ladies wearing the Burkha. Repressed gender they certainly were not. Unfortunatley the Jewish controlled American media would like us to see it different.

RE msg 2, deecyprus4 >>> Hippo I have always respected and had respect for Syria..her leader always speaks with wisdom and intellect..just my opinion of course. <<< ===> There are quite a lot of reports from human rights organizations with a complete different look at Syria and its leader now and before him (his father - talking about democratic elections...). But its just the opinion of independent organizations, of course.

Morning DC ...well I don't think the UK can continue to claim the moral high ground on torture anymore either and I personally think the human rights issue is a much over egged pudding in the middle east.

One of the things I love about Limas(s)ol is that it is so cosmopolitan. There is even a Syrian Restaurant - The Syrian Arab Friendly Club - there's one in Nicosia, too Great food - no Sheep's eyes - and good value - if you can ignore the strength of the Euro... In Limas(s)ol the staff were Christian and Muslims and very friendly... As ever, the notion we have about a nation might be more akin to what we read/ hear ( preconceptions ) rather than how we find the people in real life..
