Depend who you are flying with. If you fly with Turkish airlines or Cyprus turkish airlines, you get a transit ticket.

The plain will stop for an hr and continue to Ercan. You may not even get out of the plain, you do not have to get a visa.

If you fly with any other airline, you will have to get a visa, you will have to take your baggage and check in again.

You state you are using 2 airlines unless they are part of the same alliance which Lufthansa and Turkish are. You dont then need to reclaim your luggage if booked through. If not it only costs a few pounds for a visa and the visa desk is quite conveniently situated. The only time you stay on the plane is if you are booked through with the same airline like KTHY/CTA ie. Manchester- Antaliya -Ercan or similar.

Also make sure the 2 airlines are using the same airport, there are 2 in Istanbul.

If changing at Sabiah Gokgen, beware! The visa booth is sometimes not open. There is then a struggle with immigration to get them to call someone to man the booth. They know how to shrug!

PS - even if you are changing flights with the same airline, unless things have changed, you still require a visa.

If you are flying into Istanbul Ataturk airport and changing planes to fly down to Ercan, you DO NOT need a visa if you stay airside. If you go through passport to collect baggage, you will need a visa.
