hi

our son will be 18 in september, he wants to learn to drive.

when can he start taking lessons?

i know he can't take a test until he is 18, but can he have lessons before that.

i know the tc kids just drive in the village anyway, but i'm not happy for him to do that.

any recommendations on driving schools?

if he returns to the uk, can he change the trnc licence for a uk one?

(especially not being a tc.)

as he will also have a uk address..

Hi fire starter,

Just up the road that goes to the wednesday market on your left side there is driving school (forgot the name). They advertised a month ago saying all the lessons plus exam and licence would cost 700 TL.

But you cannot change the trnc for a uk one unfortunately.. The uk doesnt accept the trnc one.

A TRNC licence can be used in the UK for up to one year ,it can not be exchanged for a uk licence , not sure what age you can take lessons , but you will not need many as the test is one of the essiest in the world and takes all of fifteen minutes , everyone I know who took it passed , they were aged between 18 & 80 , there are a couple of schools next to the wen`s market

Hi Firestarter,

I passed my driving test here, you can drive in the UK for a year without L plates but after that time you wont be able to drive until you have passed a UK test.

Anybody know about taking the driving test in the south instead - then you would have a full EU licence. I know the test is a lot easier there than the UK, for example only 7 or 8 easy theory questions. They do stipulate that you need to be resident for 6 months, presumably in the south, I don't know if they will accept a Trnc residency.

A TRNC driving licence is valid for 12 months. By that time you either need to have passed the UK test, or have applied for a provisional licence. Obviously if you have not passed the UK test after the 12 months is up, you can not drive unaccompanied.

If you are not normally resident in the UK, the twelve months starts from the date of your last entry to the UK. It is not cumulative. So somebody floating regularly between the TRNC and UK, need never take a UK test.

Frightening isn't it. One of thos people could be alongside you on the M25!
