Hi All, I'm new to the forum but have been reading many negative posts about life in Nth Cyprus. As I have been considering moving to cyprus I would appreciate any advice (pro's and cons) providing it's constructive. Would anyone suggest long term renting as appossed to buying and what are the main problems to buying. I intend visiting in sept and would appreciate your views on the riverside holiday village. Sorry I know there's a lot of questions but I'm trying to get an overall view from residents not just visitors

sharky. Long term rent - 6 months at least - before you commit to anything.

Don't know anything about the Riverside but I'm sure someone else will advise you.

Good luck. Do the research.

sharky - rent first and agree with Turtle's post - Riverside is a good base for having a look around.

As I remember, the riversid is usede for housing casino staff? 6 or 8 of them in an apartment. Mainly Russians and Kazakhs.

Good luck

small pools for the size of complex. When we stayed there was no banister up the stairs so was a big drop if you have young kids.

We stayed at Riverside a few years ago, whilst we were looking at property to buy. It was January/February time and the weather was freezing. The reason we picked Riverside was the fact that a week on half board basis was cheaper than the flights would have cost. It was very good value for money, but I agree not great for families because the apartments (while spacious and being over 2 floors) did not have bannisters on the stairs. Have to say, we found the staff very helpful and friendly. Cannot comment on pools - too bloody cold!!

Riverside is a bit dated especially the reception area, and also the bar is tired looking with a dirty carpet. Whatever you do make sure that your room is not near the avairy unless you want to get woken up at 5am every morning. You will need a car as it's a bit far from anywhere.

I cannot comment on riverside - not stayed there, but i have stayed at the Almond Holiday Village in Alsancak, and i would recommend them, especially if you have a family

I haven't stayed at Riverside for about 5 years, but they did have a regular free shuttle bus to/from Girne that would drop off and pick up at all the Beaches in between. Car hire prices were good at the time - I don't know about now.

The Reception area was like 'Pine City' - very 60's! It used to feature in Green Island Holidays Brochure, so it didn't come as too much of a shock - actually I was quite taken by it...

Could not fault the food, staff or service. The 'Grand Meze' at the weekend was absolutely 'to die for'. I used to avoid the Belly Dancer tho'...

Good pool and sunbathing area.

Massage available, reportedly very good.

Accomodation was perhaps 'a little tired', but perfectly comfortable and clean.

I understand that they can often arrange flight and accomodation for little more than the bare cost of the flight - I know people who regularly use them as an 'overflow' for excess Family!

I wouldn't have second thoughts about staying there if occassion demanded it.

Stayed at Riverside in Feb/Mar found staff & management very helpfull, there is a bus into town, and car hire is cheap, and reception is very nice ,you are not going to live at reception!!! and there are three pools, the only small one is the kiddies pool.stayed in self-catering, we are also thinking of moving to TRNC.

Would definitely recommend Riverside, have stayed there twice now. All the comments about being a little dated are true, but the accomodation is clean and comfortable. The staff are brilliant they absolutely made our Holiday in July last year when we brought the kids.

Hope this helps

Stayed several times at Riverside - good value & nice people and a good base for a look around if you're looking to live in Girne itself or to the east of Girne. Definitely rent before you buy and would recommend you buy a re sale, with all mains services in situ and a kocan to avoid some of the pitfalls you will read about on here. Good luck.
