We are sending over a container of personal belongings in March - mainly items that are more than 12 months old and used.

However a few items such as dining table and chairs and Sofa are new and in original boxes.

Please can anyone advise from their own experience or common knowledge if there is a fixed percentage import tax/duty which Customs may apply to new goods (not televisions)?

Thanks in advance.

if they can see that its for personal use and not re-sale, you shouldn't be charged anything ( for my 2 sofas i went to DFS and got a couple of 'Sofa Bags' -wacking great polly bags-free).Generator (well worth bringing at least 6.5 kva), may require an import licence-easy to obtain on arrival though.

Hi Paul and Jubbly.

Although Customs have at times been lenient in the past, they do seem to have become more keen in just the last month. It should be remembered that the Exemption from Duty only applies to USED household goods and personal effects, and it is a concession. Even when Duty is paid most goods are still cheaper and better quality than can be bought locally. If anyone has a specific enquiry please email me and I'll try to help.

Cheers

We also used Jo Valentine last August had not trouble all we had to pay for was for the TV and the generator. We brought brand new cane furniture over still its packing and the guys in the UK just wrote numbers on it and said tell them you brought it at auctions and thats the lot number. It worked. All we had to do in Cyprus was meet Jo's rep who took us to the police station and the next thing we had the container outside our home. Just one breakage of a large jug, they packed everything so well.
