Hi Just a word of warning we have just discovered our house was broken into last night - we're currently in UK - the police etc attended quickly but believe it is the same "gang" who have been doing Lapta etc recently - they would appear to have moved East.

Just thought people should know to be vigilant

cronos - good question and to be perfectly honest, have never been too sure!! Alsancak/Lapta/Karsiyaka all sort of melt in to one to me

Paul reckons that Lapta ends round about The Sempati and that's where Karsiyaka starts??

Anyone got any ideas??

I alway thought it ended where the main road turns back to Lapta, near to the satellite shop and Lapida hotel.

For those who are asking, Lapta/Karsiyaka border is just before the Simena Hotel.

Message 1 Alisun.

So sorry to hear that, having been burgled twice last year in Ozankoy I know how you are feeling. Thank you for reporting it here. It makes us all more vigilant.

What I would like to know is why are there all the 'nit-picking' comments ?

Who gives a flying ----! where the borders of Alsancak, Lapta or Karsyaka are.

I do know that there are going on burglaries all over the island and hope that all of you guys who think that it is worth smarmy commentsare never affected.

I don't think anyone was nit picking, it was simply a question, people on here are getting so touchy it's unbelievable.

Ballyboffin - read message 5. This was a genuine enquiry. OK, not earth shattering, but an enquiry never the less which some felt warranted a reply. I don't think anyone is making smarmy remarks and certainly not under-estimating the distress of anyone who has been unfortunate enough to have been burgled. As hattikins says, some on here certainly are getting very touchy.

Perhaps I missed it. But how do 'they' get in? Windows, doors, (aluminium, wood) or do 'they' have special tools, or is the problem, that the locks are just not good enough?

The signpost where Lapta ends and Karsiyaka begins was knocked down a while back. So for those people who do not venture west too often, the border of Lapta/Karsiyaka is just before the Simena Hotel. Just after the Ak-Tak market.

What would be of benefit to all on this board is getting some idea of the modus operandi of these criminals i.e. method of access, time of day (or night), anyone that had attempted break-ins that ultimately were not successful etc.

If this information could be collated on this board then it may give others a chance to protect their properties.

We could all learn a lot from the people that have been burgled and rather than close this thread down it should remain and should educate all of us as to what we need to do to protect our property.

Any postings that will help us all to be secure will remain and any off topic will be deleted.

Ballyboffin.....get a grip for God's sake !

Don't look for trouble where there is none !

If you read back to my thread I wasn't being flippant or dismissive....it was a genuine, relevant , on-topic comment.

Someone had commented on the recent spate of burglaries in Lapta.....which someone else had passed comment on as they'd heard it was Karsiyaka.

As these two places border each other I suspected that they may actually be one and the same incidents and was looking for geographical clarification.

So...as I said....drop the paranoia and the unnecessary friction, and we may all learn something.

This is a serious subject. We are away from our apartment for a long period of time & the thought that it may have been broken into is not what we want to think about. So information on how these people are getting into places would be important.

This is a serious suggestion for those that live here full time.

Most of the Banks here have Safety deposit boxes available. For those with jewellery that isn't worn on a daily basis, it would make sense to use these facilities.

I have spoken in some depth to Martin at Lambousa Security and I am convinced that his system is well worth considering. I strongly advise people, who leave their homes unattended, to get some form of alarm system fitted before they become the next statistic.

I particularly like the feature of sending text alarm messages to up to 8 different numbers, these could be 1) Your UK home number. 2) Local Police. 3) Monitoring service. 4) Neighbour who lives here full-time. etc, etc.

I have no connection with or financial interest in Lambousa Security, Martin or Gordon Kent.

That is useful thank you cooper! I also agree it would be useful to know how these burglars are getting into the properties. They are obviously targetting properties that are left empty for some weeks, what about light timers that come on regularily so it looks like you are in or friends going round now & again so they can see someone is coming and going from the house? Alternatively house sitters if it's just for a week or so, there are plenty of people here looking for work that would be probably willing to do it for you.

PS Lets all stay calm and be friends I don't think it's fair to criticise someone's question as all questions are valid and as far as the thread going off topic this seems to be something that occurs regularily anyway ;0)

I assume it's those living in NC that are burgled as cash and instant jewelary are what they go for. those that are abroad are not worth robbing as they is nothing to rob in those villas

thats what I hear that thieves look for occupied homes and choose them there is no sense robbing an empty house and risk getting caught

GSM wireless burglar alarms very easy to set up and don't cost the earth. They can use motion detectors as well as door/window contacts. I would go easy on the motion detectors as most of our places are not insect free and they will initiate false alarms. I would also enquire about wireless internet to make sure that they don't interfere with the signal.

For examples of alarm systems on Ebay (full systems from £99) see the link below;

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wireless-GSM-Burglar-House-Alarm-Defender-EASY-To-USE_W0QQitemZ280334419575QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Burglar_Alarms?hash=item280334419575&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1686%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

In my case, the first time was through a patio door which they forced. Second time was through the downstairs toilet window measuring 40cmx40cm.

It was closed but they forced the catch.

Both times it was during the night while we were in bed.

3 of my neighbours have also been burgled, in one case they entered the guy's bedroom while he was asleep, took his trousers from the chair and stole his wallet from the pocket.

It is scary britvic.

We lock the bedroom door now and have motion sensors, thankfully we have a balcony off the bedroom should we need to escape.

When it happens to you once it is bad enough, but twice in a year makes you worry even more.

I think that I need to apologise for some of my comments on this thread, I saw the 'red rag' when I saw the 'OFF TOPIC' comments about the boundaries between the Karsiyaka, Lapta & Alsancak villages when Alisun reported her burglary in the first posting and the fact the her posting became a debate about that, rather than the fact that she was burgled. Serious subject in my estimation and I felt that it was being denegrated.

I really wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Just returned back to the site and was a little dismayed at the way the posting had gone as I was only posting as a warning to everyone - so Ballyboffin it must be the Northern Irish in us that wants to stay on topic!!! But seriously folks the house is being lived in although we're not there at the moment (although they were out to dinner at the time) - so no nataless they're not just targeting empty properties - in fact as basheer stated they're only interested in jewellery and cash so empty house wouldn't be attractive. They got in by forcing the patio doors so yes the locks aren't sufficient something we will remedy immediately - like many people we have lived in a false sense of security regarding crime in TRNC and my main reason for posting was to give everyone the same wake up call we've had.

I tell you some secret on how to protect your house.

In home base and B and Q they sell these light switches where you plug your light bulb into this device and the light goes of and on or on in the dusk and goes off in the day light. or you can set the switch where the light goes of and on randomly durring the night and no one won't tell the difference if your in or out.

They only only cost ten pounds and they are worth every penny. Extremly good if your away from your home.

If these low life are british and from what I am hearing they are. I hope to god they get caught very soon and get thier just rewards. Its just so unbelievable here. We all want to feel secure. Im just so glad that i have dogs.My guess thy are the same people who brag about the amount of benefits they claim whilst living here

I looked in a few places , do you think he means a timer , ? but he did say you put the bulb in it , and the light comes on and off randomly , the only one's in each shop were ones that came on dusk to dawn with no other option . Well it's too late now . Will continue my search on my return

Thanks , Pat

Timer lights won't put off intruders they will just watch the property and if they don't see any movement they will look closer, you give them light to get in easier and get around quicker as they don't have to find light switches in the dark and they won't let you or the person who looks after your property know that there has been an intrusion.

Even if you don't wish to have an intruder alarm system from ourselves, we do give advice of the best security options for your property and we can do a site visit, but a small fee will be charged.

we got back lastweek from Ozankoy from our holidays & a young lad on a scooter kept riding round about lunchtime till 2pm, i could see he was sussing out the villa we were staying in, so much so that later that evening we went out for dinner, but due to us having a young family returned @ 21:00hrs to find lad again running out of driveway in our car headlights, i think we disturbed the lad as nothing was broken or damaged.

he was about 13 or 14 years old with dark hair, scruffy looking, no seat on scooter!!

it spoiled the last few days of my wifes holls as she was terrified at nights, as it brought it all back from when we got broken into back here in UK.

As crazy as it sounds if there going to get in they will just dont leave anything expensive lying around. A house alarm with a very loud decibell ie siren is very good, in uk you need planing for this but im sure the trnc are not in line with the uk planing procedure, i think only prob could be the power cuts hope info helps as talking from experience.

As someone suggested either on this thread or another, worth having one's camera close by so that if you see someone suspicious - take a picture (like the young lad on the scooter) so that if one is burgled, that would be a good place to start.........if they are innocent, surely that can soon be realised one way or another..........
