Having a few days in Turkey and need to change £s to tl. Is it best to change money in Girne high street or at a Turkish resort? Any advice would be appreciated.

Sorry! I just re-read your post and realised that you (obviously!) meant Mainland Turkish Resort... I'm afraid I haven't a clue - but someone else might, and at least it's kept the topic to the top! Keith.

The best way is to draw out TL from a cashpoint against a UK Nationwide account.

My Nationwide card is a visa, and almost all the cash point machines in TRNC accept visa cards.

Now believe nationwide have introduced a charge for cash withdrawals in non EEC Countries. If you do this it might be worth checking out as it may prove to be an expensive option.

Karen, As far as I know there are currently no cashpoints in Lapta. The first one is Turk Bank in Alsancak.

Nationwides rules a : Using your FlexAccount debit card or credit card to make cash withdrawals abroad When you are withdrawing cash from an ATM abroad you will be given the cash in the local currency. The transaction will be converted to sterling on the date the transaction is debited from your account, at the rate of exchange applied by VISA. For more information you can view the Visa website. Please note, Nationwide are not responsible for the content or accuracy of third party websites. Both the VISA and DELTA logos are shown on the FlexAccount debit card and cash can be withdrawn from any ATM, bank or building society which display these logos. The Visa charge will apply to cash withdrawals made outside of the Visa Europe region.

Nationwides rules b : Using your FlexAccount debit card or credit card to make purchases abroad When using your card to make purchases abroad, retailers may offer you the opportunity to pay in the local currency or sterling. If you pay in sterling, commission is normally charged on the transaction by the retailer. In countries in the Visa Europe region, we would recommend that the transaction is processed in the local currency as the Visa charge does not apply. However, in those countries where the Visa fee is applicable, we are unable to make a recommendation as we are not able to confirm what commission charges are applied by the retailer. NOTE the information on use of foreign cureny (TL ) so try to buy in TL Nationwides rules c : Visa charge a fee for each transaction and Nationwide currently pays that fee on your behalf. We will start to pass this fee onto you from 6 May 2009 on credit card and from 1 June 2009 on debit card and it will be included in the sterling>

Sorry 13/14/15 slightly off the mark but as a lot of people on this board have opened accounts with Nationwide Building Society mainly to make use of their cash card facility I thought getting the exact information on the new rules might be of assistance. By the way as at today they say: The fee is currently 0.84%. From 1 July 2009 this fee will increase to 1%.

flightholiday the link is here btw http://nationwide.co.uk/current_account/foreigntransactions.htm and as it clearly says "Turkey - No fee charged" Visa does not charge Nationwide for transactions, either cash withdraw or purchase, in Turkey or TRNC and thus Nationwide do not pass this charge onto customers, because there is not one. For converting sterling to TL (in not large amounts) using a nationwide current account debit card on a local cashpoint machine remains the most cost effective method. No charges (from visa or nationwide) and a very competetive exchange rate.

Just to be clear Nationwide has several different cards. Current account debit card - visa badged, no transaction fee for TL cash withdrawals in Turkey / TRNC, or purchases. Cash Card - not visa badged, can only be used for withdrawing cash not for purchases, no transaction fee for local withdrawals anywhere in the world. Credit Card - there is a fee for withdrawing cash with this card (cash advance fee), in any currency. This is not to do with currency conversion but a standard fee that all credit cards have to some degree re cahs withdrawl.
