Folks I have been getting Hints in emails and even in public that if I don't behave I'm gone.. You'll note that Juliet and Pikey have been "quiet" The REAL reason is more to do with my warnings re TV sat cos that pirate TV and charge you annual fees - this seems to be irritating certain folk. So if I suddenly "disappear" - thanks for the "entertainment" - it worked both ways - you'll find me lurking about occasionally Here's hoping for a fair settlement for Cypriots then us - in that order Good luck !

It appears that in stating what you believe to be true, that someone on this forum, in their ignorance, thinks may hurt their commercial interests, has to be silenced. I think that by doing so, that the great British tradition of justice will come into play. Trying to silence someones opinion, whether you agree with it or not will usually backfire.

Let's hope it doesn't come to that. If everyone agreed to the comments the Discussions would become very short and the Forum would be more like a sellers page

Perhaps I'm biased. Mark will know what I mean, but whether you agree with him or disagree, he is does have a great deal of knowledge about Cyprus, be it North or South. I have often disagreed with him, perhaps not on this board, but he always comes back with his valid reasons for the point he has made. So lets keep 6 m's. Paul ps I don't think he has been keeping an eye on this posting, more likely out with his better half.

Hi Folks, wow thanks for ALL the input - and YES that includes DC and Turtle... ! I dodn't bother coming back, yesterday ..I EXPECTED to be banned - and when I logged on on my laptop - which opens the last opened browser windows by default - I realised I WASN'T bannned ... :o I don'T WANT to be banned and I thought being quiet for 24 hours would help the forum admin and I concerned to re-evaluate ..... My good lady was feeling under the weather yesterday and it seemed a good tme to concentrate on her and I didn't watch tv, or the intrnet for 24 hours and saw the GP this am.. !! May be this little "disagreement" was wothwhile... I am REALLY grateful for the responses and I would miss this board. Mark

Its probably easier to use google translate and thats also more fun trying to work out what the original text was meant to be after the computer generated message is translated |

Re msg. 45 Oh, once again "spasobo bolshoI"? OK, it goes this way. Let's look at the "spasibo". Rule of thumb - if noun ends with "o" or "e" it should be neuter gender (moloko, kino, zhelezo). Next, the bolshoi is an adjective and it is masculine. In Russian adjectives vary with gender according to the noun, means you can not mix gender (eh, you know, linguistically;) One more rule, if I am not mistaken, all neuter adjectives would end with "ye". So you say bolshoye spasibo, kakoye nebo golouboye etc. This "ye", being an unstressed vowel, is quite reduced so when said quickly you can barely distinguish between "bolshoi" and "bolshoye". BUT, when it is said honestly and sincerely, you know wholeheartedly (aka ot vsego sertza;), then it could be heard easily.

Messages 54/55 - Interesting points here. I (obviously) speak no Russian. Attended Turkish classes this year (with little success, I might add), but why do we (those of us to have some little knowledge of various European languages) resort back to them. I worked for a Greek shipping company for some years, many years ago, and still retain some of what I learned then (not always particularly p.c.) add that with some French, a smattering of German and some other bits and pieces, and what have you got? Yes, the Internationally recognised "finger pointing and smiling". Beats Esparanto, anyway. PS Mark and proger1 - from what I have seen of written Russian, it bears a very strong likeness to written Greek and I gather some words are very similar??? J

Hi J, re msg 56 When I first moved to Limas(s)ol I couldn't tell the languages apart, but they are quite different - Greek lower case characters, especially :( It is quite easy to learn the Russian alphabet and MOSTLY the letters make sounds and it follows stricter rules that English - Марк = Mark, is easy Жин = Jean - harder.. такси = Taxi So an S = С, P = П Я = Ya Р= R fun, eh ?

Haven't any experience of greek since small childhood in Autralia which involved another type of finger pointing (without the smiles) by the greek neighbours kids. I would be surprised to know that russian resembles any other language. Although there are quite a few letters that look the same as english they don't sound the same ex: H is N, B is V, P is R, C is S, Y is U and there are several other confusing things. I think that is what I find the hardest when trying to read it, I know the russian pronunciation of the letter but my brain keeps thinking it in english. That and the fact that I keep introducing german words that I know because they sound right doesn't help. My wife and step daughter have made a rule that we should speak english for them to improve but I think secretly they just want me to stop murdering their language

Proger, Sure, I could. You found it too heavy? "because this is wrong way to say this" I am sorry if I am sound a bit judgmental but that is not the way for (most) adults to pick up a new language. Only babies don't need the rules of the language their parents speak. They simply hear their parents talk and mimic them. But why bother? She calls you haroshee and, believe me, that is all what you need. TheSaints, I believe your mother in law did her best, though as with any education process, while parent involvement is crucial, the role of environment is equally important. "how are we supposed to get it correct". IMO this is truly a matter of motivation, the only thing you will never achieve is a native-like pronunciation. But again, I think it is too rare when mixed couples fluent in both languages, especially if they live in a third culture.

Thanks all - more confused than ever now. I should say that the reason I likened written Greek to written Russian is that, to me, it looks very similar. Also, a few years ago, we went on a property inspection trip to Paphos - just to decide whether we bought in the North or South of Cyprus. Our guide was a very pleasant young Russian woman. On one of our many excursions, she asked me what a theatre poster translated as. I didn't have any idea, but she told me it was a a Tennessee (spelling?) Williams play that, to her, said "The Glass Zoo". I said that I thought it was "The Glass Menagerie. J PS Maqbs of course the easiest way to pick up any language is to live in an environment where it is spoken at all times- and the younger the better. Which is why I don't understand why foreign languages are not taught in schools in UK from the age of 5 - children are like sponges - they absorb everything.

Sorry magbs, I was trying to be just a little sarcastic. In breaking down the refernce to male , female or singular or group construction of the wording you have obviously hit the nail on the head except for one small part. The words were written in english context letters eluding to a cyrillic alphabet language therefore the originator has what we refer to as poetic licence in the textual conversion. Ok, so that was me just trying to sound intelligent (I am sure, very badly) about the fact that you are criticising how someone rights russian using english letters. You are correct however that it did come across to me as too heavy simply because I find Russian a very hard language to learn, maybe I am too old. What would you suggest I do when my new baby comes along, teach them my language, my wifes language or a mixture of both ( not sarcasm, genuine advice requested)

The-Wicks, "more confused than ever now". I"l try to clear it up. You are absolutely right. The Russian/Cyrillic (it was named for Cyril, a Greek monk) alphabet is based on the Greek scrips and 2-3 characters borrowed from Hebrew. . In modern Russian only printed letters look very similar to the Greek upper cases and there are also some unique letters. And nothing resembles the Greek when it comes to the handwriting.

Proger, If you want to grow up bilingual then my suggest is pretty simple. When the parents speak two different languages, each of them should talk in his/her mother tongue to the child. And please, NEVER EVER mix the lingos, that means you should only speak your language to the child and your wife should only speak Russian to him/her. This way the baby can identify two completely different sets of words. Otherwise the baby will mix them too.

Dear Magbs, re msg 65 On reflection, this is SUCH good advice ! ;) Have a client married to a lady from Dagistan - she spoke Russian as a first language.. Dad is a Scot..they live in Limas(s)ol. To hear their - then- four year old speak was "interesting".. combining Russian , English and Greek to construct sentences. His own language !

My concern is not so much what they can understand and talk, I am more concerned with which is better for their education. My daughter now speaks and understands very good English as well as her natural language Russian however her grammar is not so good and she has admitted freely that she is not so good at Russian any more because she thinks in English and translates to Russian which sometimes causes strange speech. I speak English and Doric and a smattering of other languages, my wife speaks Russian and my daughter can speak modern words that I don't always understand what would you suggest the main language for the newbie.

Well done you have managed to get a response once again in favour of your views and comments (not by all).It reminds me of a child looking for the attention they require every now and again when feeling left out with no friends to play with!Well i for one say good riddance and will not miss your biased and selfish views!Especially on the TRNC.As the song goes "back to the ussr!"(hopefully)!
