Our new Hotel project will be called The Ikon - It will be an Iconic building but more than that it will pay homage to Cypriot history and to its 'Icons'. Suites will be named after them , i.e The Lionheart Suite..etc etc ,

the hotel is creating a book called 'The Ikons of Cyprus ' , It will be an illustrative book listing the notable figures throughout the history of Cyprus. It Will include a large image and a brief description to who they are and there relation to Cyprus on each page. They will be available in all the rooms for guests to look through and learn something about the rich past of the island aswell as being offered for sale to them and to the public. So far we have identified 282 notable figures. What id like is if any of you can come up with any people throughout its history that we have missed out and should be mentioned....please no obvious ones as im sure we know about them , its the more obscure figures we may have missed out,

Tommy, Eric Seans aka many other names, is/was one of the most notorious posters on this forum. Most of the membership on here couldn't tolerate his persistent comments (often truthful) about the trnc.

I'm pretty sure he's part of the history of the 'new' Cyprus. )

Ok doyen , vamik volkan , mehmet zeka, hal ozsan , ziynet sali and fari censel are also new to me also , the rest i have , i was hoping for some more historical figures going back more than atleast a century , still debating till how recent we should take the book and if we should include some controversial people or not , You seem well read and informed , I want to be unbias and include conytmeporary greek and turkish even british iconic figures , but its starts to get sensitive , if i include , nikos sampson , makarios , etc , who were iconic for the Gc's , i want it to be unbiased , do u think i should take it all the way from the Khirikitians ( Cyprus 1st known settlement ) all the way to today ??

Tommy, if the proposed illustrative book is about listing the notable figures throughout the history of Cyprus, then you must include all the figures that had a bearing on the country as it is today. Otherwise the book will be deemed bias.

Hi Tommy - how about Bill Dreghorn - adopted Cyprus in the early 70's, died in 2002 in his 90's. Lived in Girne and Famagusta and wrote many books about local history, archaeology, geography and geology. Even has a street named after him in Gazi.

=> Yes, you do, Bill. Some - usually young - fanatics in the Rest of Cyprus (RoC) seem to believe everything they read (on this cyprus44 board) and their comments are more disgusting than frightening.

Try this link [ http://www.cyprus-forum.com/ ] and... happy reading! (They have an excellent search facility on that board; may I suggest you try: tommy or ikon ?)

bravo arbee, out of your list I have 6 new ones, the rest i had already, well done mate .. so now i have nearly 300 notable individuals and peoples ,Yes Doyen , its going to be a very comprehensive book but unlike an encyclopedia, will be mainly illustrative , i.e 3/4's of the page an image and a 1/4 of a brief description of them and their relationship with Cyprus on each page , Book will be around A4 size, a unique homage to Cypriot history and quite unlike any other book . Easy reading and great for anyone to get an overview of its rich history and importance to many peoples including khirokitians , minoans , hittites , assyrians, mycanaen ,macedonians, phoneacians, sea peoples , byzantium, crusaders , knights templars , english , romans , egyptians , persians ,Islamic Arabs, mamlukes, seljuks, Lusignans , venetians , genoese , british and more, its so fascinating ,i cant imagine another location in the world that has been ruled and passed through so many hands

u know doyen , ive been trying to find anywhere thats has had as many different overlords/rulers/empires as much as Cyprus has and i cant , it may well be the most jostled over peice of land on earth. The closest i can find is perhaps jeruselem or some other parts of mesopatamia , any historians who know any better please enlighten me , or does Cyprus hold that title ! Another fascinating unique feature ,

re 62

"The closest i can find is perhaps jeruselem or some other parts of mesopatamia"

Geographically Jerusalem was not a part of Mesopotamia 'cos strictly saying its quite far far away from the land between the rivers.

Anyway, Mesopotamia rules The cradle of civilization, as referred to by Isaak Ozimov (aka Isaac Asimov) in his brilliant history book The Near East - 10,000 Years of History.

Does anyone think the book should keep with historical people , or perhaps also include 'economical icons ' , ' indigenous icons' ' industrial icons' , ' natural icons ' etc , such as the Carretta sea turtle , mouflon sheep , Damascus Goats , Karpazia Donkeys , helim ( haloumi ) cheese , the olive , several indigenous birds and plant species , sea fauna etc ....???

RE msg 60, tommy13 > crusaders , knights templars , english , romans , egyptians , persians ,Islamic Arabs, mamlukes, seljuks, Lusignans <

=> Hi Tommy, buddy, good morning to you! I know very little, I know, but I'm sure that the Knights Templar and the Lusignans were Crusaders. So be careful to give them all their own page in your book. Furthermore some free advice: do employ a proofreader and let him/her start with the title of your book (see msg # 1).

PS. And I'm REALLY interested to know where you think to find the large illustrations to go with the short descriptions...

Thanks Dutch ,,, crusaders will certainly get a few pages as they appeared under different guises on severel occasions in cypriot history . Actually images are very easy to find and copy or purchase from the internet.

Your absolutely right about the proof reader, me and my team have collected most of the information needed , i would definately like to hear from anyone here in trnc who can edit, proofread & assist in preparing it ready for print or anyone with experience in putting together such a book.

Tommy. Your book is to be an illustrative book listing the notable figures throughout the history of Cyprus. It Will include a large image and a brief description to who they are and there relation to Cyprus on each page.

I assume then that you will want to detail notable events that have occurred in Cyprus over the years?

On what notable event will the book end?

Hi dutch , you can read about them in the book , there are atleast 7 different rulers of cyprus who partook in and/or aided the crusades .

Baybars image , yes dutch although i have 99% of images associated with 'the icons' some are more difficult to come by , this link is said to be' Baibars punishing Armenians of the Kingdom of Cilicia in 1266. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:DisasterOfMari1266.JPG , apparently there is also image of him in Al-Zahiriyah Library which he originally built in syria, damscus cant find it on tthe net , but apparently street sellers have postcards of him outside the library i have managed to find out. When i get my hands on it , i could let u know.,

Pay for work i would simply not discuss that here. I would have to first familiarise myself with the going rate before i would go into negotiations on the matter , which i have yet to do ...

And we would have to agree a truce treaty regards your personal crusade against me , then we may talk , lol

Yes Doyen .. very good point and one if been thinking about , I will probably take consultation at a later date on how to conclude it in the most unnoffensive way to anyone and word it carefully so as to end on a positive note. It will be a homage to cypriot history , No additional politially motivated statements or personal opinions will enter the book , Just a collection of unbiased historical facts as and when they occured. Afterall , its a book first and foremost to compliment our hotel concept & design. We are thinking of dedicating a kind of museum/gallery area somewhere off the lobby and have the book displayed in a gallery form , for tourists and anyone whos interested able to walk in and peruse, even considering the aquisition of antiquities on display relating to the different periods of history , peoples etc , have already spoken to antiquities department regards this , but not sure if we will take it that far yet , but it may become a type of museum boutique hotel ...

RE msg 85, tommy13 > Baybars or Baibars <

=> Rubbish, Tommy. Your link (what would you be without Wikipedia, eh?) directs us to this description: "The Mamluks defeat the Armenians at the disaster of Mari, in 1266." So what? I'm talking about Baybars (Baibars) who invaded Cyprus in 1426. OK, forget it. Your new proofreader will correct small errors like this one...

RE msg 85, tommy13 > Payment proofreader. Pay for work i would simply not discuss that here. <

What about things such as the wrecks we have here in Cyprus? Is that something that is of any interest? Such as the WW2 plane wreck east of the castle and the ship thats in the castle which dates way back to 300bc. Not sure if its a road you want to go down or not but should you want any info regarding the underwater side of things, i can definitely do my best to help.
