Hi Caroline,

You are right, if you try & can even speak some basic Turkish it's better than nothing, the more time you spend in Turkey/here & surround yourself with locals/mainland Turks you will learn even more and you're right people love you for trying! Smiles, gestures, common sense and making yourself understood are fine even if you're not fluent! 'Yavaş yavaş' as they say here or in Italy (I am half Italian) 'piano piano si va lontano'...=slowly slowly you will go far! The best way to learn a language is to live it, I gave up on the courses and also teach myself! It's easy to get lazy here as there are lots of English/English speaking people but I think it's a great language & fun to learn...well, I love languages!

Anyway, good luck with the flat hunt, am sure something will come up!

Hi Nat, Yes I am self taught .... So of course My Grammar is poor, then again i never claimed to be a fluent speaker , But trust me I can argue with the best of them in Turkish , I taught myself a lot of Turkish writing , though just from the small Dictionary , I worked full time Nat in Textiles so not much time .... But in my line of work I know all the words and I communicate very well ... It has been around 3 years 6 months since I was last there in Turkey and more since being in Kibris en son lol ama benim Turkce fenel degil ya saka saka ... insan cok mutlu ben Turkce konusiyor gulmek ... sorry I speak better than write... thanks NAT For your vote of confidence much appreciated !! and why the lady above had to make that comment ben Hic Bilmem ! Hic hayret bey sey ya LOL XXX THANKS NAT
