Today, from 6 pm, is your last chance to see new born turtles on the Karshiyaka Beach, when this years last nest will be excavated. An unforgettable experience!

Surprised at cloggies spelling of Karsiyaka on the thread title.

Obviously it's the Dutch interpretation.

Or the phonetic version.

Whatever.

How many languages do you speak?

RE msg 9, newscoop: (...) Surprised at cloggies spelling of Karsiyaka on the thread title. Obviously it's the Dutch interpretation. Or the phonetic version. Whatever. (...)

=> The software on many servers and users' computers in this world can handle the letter "s". This however is not the case with typical Turkish letters (29 in the alphabet) that do not exist in for example the British or American English alphabet. ("i" without a dot etc). The letters "s- and S-cédille" (ş Ş) are two of them. Often these letters are shown on computer screens as strange tokens.

So. That's why it is quite normal and internationally accepted to use "sh" for "s," (s-cédille) in English computer text (not on printed maps and other printed material).

If you write "Lefkos,a" (Lefkoşa) in non-Turkish software it is safer to write Lefkosha - everybody can read and pronounce it. The same goes for Lala Mustafa Paşa (Pasha), Karşiyaka (Karshiyaka) etc. [more]

continued form msg 12.

This has nothing to do with "Dutch interpretation, phonetic version or whatever". Too bad, eh?

Btw. This was a thread about young turtles. But you couldn't resist to write something silly. Sad.

For my interested friend "newscoop", who was so "Surprised at cloggies spelling of Karsiyaka": this link

http://www.html-reference.com/Escape.asp

may give you some idea about the problems with special characters on screens and in text (read the part ISO Latin Escape Sequences).

Hans...with all due respect, you are always the first one to jump on someone when they make a spelling mistake, therefore you ought to take this with a pinch of salt and a laugh...everyone else does!

RE msg 15, daisy_dukes: (...) you are always the first one to jump on someone when they make a spelling mistake (...)

=> Just for the record, because you possibly did not read all posts above: my spelling wasn't a spelling mistake.

RE msg 15, daisy_dukes: (...) you are always the first one to jump on someone when they make a spelling mistake (...)

=> "Are"? Were. It did't helb and me wil not doe it agan. Promi(s)(z)(c)ed.

RE msg 15, daisy_dukes: (...) (...) a pinch of salt and a laugh...everyone else does! (...)

=> I know. It must be my fault. I just lack this "outstanding British sense of humour" (say the Brits).

Have a nice day, Daisy! Don't forget to buy potatoes...

Another nice one, Mrs. Britvic! Though not as good as yesterday, when you found the time to post "I don't know!" in reply to a question. The best I can say about the value of your efforts is that you bring threads back to the top.

P.S. I expect another smart one-liner...

Putting on my pedantic hat your over complicated explanation confirms what I said about phonetics.

As to the "British sense of humour"

You'll never understand it.

Another thing; why are you using a Turkish keyboard?
