Hi Riaz

We were in at Oleanders last week and had a fantastic meal. Your new chef can certainly make a very good curry the lamb buhna was out of this world. Will definitely be back in the summer.

Regards

Jim.

We have been going to Jashans for last 4 years and still think it is the best value tastiest curry that we have had here.

I like the Chicken Tikka (large boneless chunks) with a dhansak sauce.

Mmm getting hungry just thinking of it.

Haven't tried Oleander yet but will definately do so - just a shame they are not closer to us .

I am afraid to say that we have been a couple of times (to Jashans) and it has to the worst experience. The last time we went the food was not up to standard. We ordered a bottle of the ole sparkly stuff and to our amazement the waiter, while approaching our table thought it would be a good idea to shake the bottle on his way over. Once at our table, he thought a few more shakes were needed and promptly opened the bottle. Te cork was sent into orbit (we were sat outside) and half the contents of the bottle ended up over us and the food. Just what you need to be sat outside covered in sticky sweet drink, an insects dream come true. Did the waiter appologise? Well of course not, he could not stop laughing and walked off. Did anyone care when we mentioned it? No.

To be honest we have eaten at many Indian resturants over here and there are a lot better than Jashans. I remember the old days when Jashans look classy and even had a guy all dressed up who would come out and meet you (back in 97). What has gone wrong now.

I would like to point out that the Indian resturants in the TRNC are nowhere near as good as back in the UK.

Well you did ask for comments.

I think it would be a good idea if Mr Riaz is looking more often after this restaurant - without him the staff seems to be a little bit lost.

And this a shame because the food is very good and for many years it was one of the best restaurants on the island.

That was unfortunate as I can honestly say we have never had a problem at either Jashans or Oleanders quite the opposite.

Perhaps you should have spoken to Riaz directly as I'm sure he would have been furious if one of his staff was laughing at you and would have compensated you in some way, in fact if he reads your comments I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't offer you something for your bad experience.

I have tried lots of different Indian restaurants in the UK and some are fantastic but many are not, its really a matter of personal ( excuse the pun) taste. In my opinion apart from the quality of the food is the value for money you get at Jashans/Oleander It has to be one of the cheapest places to eat good food in lovely surroundings in NC

Anyway as you say Riaz has asked for comments and has to expect honest negatives as well as positives.

Regards

Jim.

Well unless the food has improved, I would pass on that. The food just tastes like it is made from a jar of Pataks curry paste. The Indian food we are used to is made fresh with fresh ingrediants, not from a jar. We don't even cook like that at home. Perhaps, my partner should come and show them how to cook a decent curry and even how to make naan bread.

It is up to Jashans to show us they have made a difference.

Hi Andy,

Sorry to hear about your experience at Jashans. I must have had at least 20 meals there, eat in and take away and I can honestly say that their curries can not be bettered here!

We had takeaway from Jashan sometimes and I really did not like the food, so we stopped using them.

Sadly Oleander disappointed me too. The food was ok but the service was not good. We went there somedays and got no service at all...we waited, went inside, shouted, went round the back, no-one came so we gave up and left - even though they claimed to be open! I hear they have improved now but I'll take a lot of convincing.

It's Al Shaheen every time for me.

It is true though that the Asian cuisine here is not quite the same as other places. I am told it is because they cannot get the quality and range of spices here, which I suppose is fair comment. It must be difficult to recreate international dishes if you can't always get exactly what you need.

Please please can we have decent size portions of chutney and relish we are sick of asking for more.

We have been to both jashans staff were rude sat 4 of us a table suitable for 2 and the food was mediocre at best.

Olliander was better but chutney and relishes were tiny servings when both places are on form they are good but as is the case with many establishments out here getting it right is elusive.

I have heard the same excuse about not being able to get the right spices to make things properly so many times. So how come we get them and my partner cooks the best curry you would ever taste.

I quite agree about chutney and relish dishes. They seem to guard these with their lifes. Anyone would think they were giving away £10 notes!!

Why no naan bread either. Oh yeah, they will tell you that you cannot get the right flour. Deh... We bought lots of it in the south. With the spices. It's not just Jashans that do not do naan bread, none of them do.

Had meal Sat night in Al Shaheen (think spelt right). 7 people, popadoms to start, main meal + drinks all for 150ytl. Beat that and boy was the curry good. We even asked for something special, a Chicken Tikka Masala Vindaloo hot (which I recommend) and they got it spot on. Perhaps Riaz should start eating in his competitors resturants and see what he has to do.

Please note that I do not have an issue with Jashans, just wish all the resturants on the island would make the effort. I suppose they cater for the holiday makers who will not come back often but forget about the regulars who live here. You hear it so often when someone tells you that had a good meal somewhere and you go and it is not good at all. Soley because they are not consistent. In the UK businesses cannot afford to be complacent, so why not here?

Come on guys up the game!!

As I said its all a matter of personal tastes and what rings your bell

But there would be no need to worry about delicate herbs and spices with a Vindaloo hot as its just gonna rip your throat out anyway!!!

There are so many moaners and groaners out there! I think the food at Jashan and Oleander is very good but also very reasonably priced. If you can get a better curry in North Cyprus please let me know! Riaz don't change a thing!!

Hello Johnk49 I have been making curries for over 40 years & learnt from my

Indian husband who learnt from a Pakistani flatmate long time ago! When I am

in my N.Cyprus flat I cook curries at times & find almost every spice in the shops Haven't seen black cardomom yet but you can get coriander, cumin, turmeric, several kinds of red pepper, garam masala (or make it yourself)

Haven't yet found atta (flour for Naan, chapatis) or besan for making pakora.

Bear in mind that European versions of Indian food are a little different from the subcontinent, but both are delicious.

Riaz your curries are the best on the Island. Ive lived here for 20 years and believe me have tried them all. Very reasonably priced, lovely friendly staff, nothing too much trouble. Keep up the good work. Whatever you do you will not be able to make everyone happy. There will always be someone who is unhappy with something but if you look at the % of good and bad comments you are 95% good. You deserve a round of applause. Have a very good season.

good to know which days to find you in which restaurant.

Because you are the heart of the business!

Hello all,

Is there an Indian Restaurant run by Indians around in Kyrenia at all! Would like to eat some proper Indian food from Calcutta, Chennai or Hyderabad. The Pakistani version of Indian foods are mostly anglicised versions of curry and so less in quantity.

Keep me posted!

Cheers

Just for the record. Riaz has kindly invited us back to the resturant as you have probably read above. I have emailed him off his forum to discuss. We obviously will be taking him up on his offer and will give a full, detailed and totally honest review back on here as soon as we have made our visit.

Many Thanks Riaz

We get many of our ingredients from the south side. The 3 supermarkets we go to are Carrefour, Ofanedies (spelt wongI know!!) and the other I cannot remember the name but it is near MacDonalds. You can get virtually everything from these if you cant find it in the north.

Message for Suzan (post No.18)

We are not wingers and moaners and I dont think anyone else is in this thread either but if an owner of a business is brave enough to ask for comments on the forum about his business it is only fair to praise him (which has been done) but to also tell him where things have gone wrong.

Having seen many posts on this forum from business owners and then getting totally slated beyound belief, I think Riaz has come out of this with a smile on his face because the general opinion from everyone has been good and positive.

I will report back very soon.

Hi Riaz

Ate in Jashins twice when we were over in March and had great food and service. The fire was great. We eat and cook a lot of i ndian food so we consider ourselves as a bit of an expert. My only complaint was that when the bill was brought we were asked if we would like a brandy on the house, my husband declined as he was driving but I said yes please! the brandy never appeared! We will be over again in July and we will be visiting again for a meal - glad to hear you are increasing the portions of relishes

Well we finally met up with Riaz at the Oleander yesterday and decided that we would have our meal there rather than Jashans but I have been assured that the meal would have been the same in both places.

How would I describe the meal we had in one word? Fantastic!!

The food was excellent and the service second to none. The staff were friendly and helpful and made you feel welcome. It was a pleasure to meet Riaz for the first time and he is very knowledgeable about the food and ingredients that are used in the restaurant and a very nice guy. I can see why so many like to go when he is there.

Going back to the food, we had Chicken Tikka Masala (hot) and a Chicken Jalfrezi (med). Both of these dishes came with rice, naan breads and popadoms (which we had for starters). Our little one had grilled chicken, which came with vegetables. All the dishes were made with fresh ingredients and tasted very light unlike some curries which can be very stodgy. Every mouthful just melted in your mouth and you could not wait to eat some more. The naan bread is thin rather than thick doorsteps but so tasty and accompanied the main dish very well. If I had to say anything negative it would be the size of the mango chutney portions but you can always ask for more like we did. Nothing seemed to be a problem for the staff. We don’t generally eat desserts but Riaz recommended the Indian Ice Cream so we had one of each, Almond and a Pistachio. Wow, loved it. What a great end to a fantastic meal. We washed all this down with a bottle of rose, which for the record was delivered to the table as you would expect and was put in the glasses rather than on us.

I would highly recommend both these restaurants to you all. Those of you that go regularly, I can see why you do. If you have not been yet, please give it a try, even if you have curries at the courtyard and grove. This is different, you will love it. We will now be regulars there too. They also do a take away service as well. We had a good look through the menu and if you do not eat curry, there is a great selection of other dishes from chicken to steak and all at very good prices. Top quality food but not for the top prices you can pay elsewhere.

Overall verdict would be ***** (5 stars) both for food and service. Top Marks.

Well done Riaz. You will be seeing a lot more of us from now on.

I have been living here for over 3 years now and eaten in or had takeaways from jashans countless times and never been disappointed.

All my family and friends visiting us from the UK are always very impressed with the fantastic food and great friendly service. Will continue to recommend people go to either Jashans or Orleander

Keep up the good work, Riaz!

We have eaten at both Jashans and Oleanders and have noticed that the service is always better when Riaz is present. Food is great but agree that more chutney would be nice. We always take our visitors from the UK who love a good curry and all have loved the food.

We love Indian food and like to try as many restaurants as possible when we visit. Our favourite up to now has been Rafters, but if someone could tell us where Jashans and Oleander are then we will try them on our next visit.

Thanks.

We have just returned from a 3 week break in NC and ate at Jashans twice, the service and food was excellent, as I am a vegetarian, they turned one of the side dishes into a main meal, remembered us from the previous visit, and asked if we would like more rice, nan bread etc.

Some friends we met while staying also ate there twice with their little girl and they had nothing but praise for food and attention.

We are hoping, eventually to move (if we can sort out major problems with our builder) to just past tatlisu in Aug/Sept, and would definitely make the trip back to eat there again.

Hi jashan:

We have eaten in your establish 3 times and found your food tasty. In fact we have on my sons insistance had to travel from the Karpas as they enjoy your food.

We eat a lot of Asian food Pakistan, Indian, Kashmir locally in Bradford - West Yorks - where some of the best can be found in the UK.

The only suggestion I would make is for you to have more breads on your menu Chappati/Roti/Paranta etc - as we tend to eat our meals using these without having rice.

I enjoy your lamb with coriander and mint.

Keep up the good work - any chance of you opening up a restaurant on the east coast nearer the Karpas - Bogaz seems to be up and coming - only 30 mins then to enjoy your food!

Been going to Jashan and Oleander for a number of years now. The comments on the chutney and onions are well justified. The food is excellent. Funny how the obnoxious types out looking for a scrounge opportunity come to life with vigour at the sniff of a free night comes along. We have always found the staff to be polite and courteous. More than can be said for some of our illustrious so called moderators. Whinging freeloaders more like. Andy P I’ll interpret myself what the P stands for. Your dire description on your first visit followed by your ‘ass kissing’ I’ve scrounged my freebie, meal now report. Are too far to the extreme. Deletion expected!!

AndyP says: I will not delete. I will leave it here so everyone can see why I have had the satisfaction of banning you for 1 month.

Cyprusgaz

I am not sure what your problem with me is. As i am now getting fed up with the personal bashing you seem to be giving me at every opportunity.

If you would like to meet up and see if you are man enough to say it all to my face, then lets do it!!! In fact, as a moderator I will not tolerate being slagged off for no reason, so consider yourself banned for 1 month.

For the record. I did not go on the forum (at the time not a moderator!!) to get a free meal. I spoke the truth about what had happened one time on holiday over here before we moved here. I spoke the truth as always and excepted the offer from Riaz after we had moved here. I then gave an honest report back to the forum of my experiences after that visit.

Neg Nick's view..

From the midlands - Curry capital of the UK.......

Best curry in the North is Riaz's Happy Vally in Cattlekoy, but the decor leaves a lot to be desired and the food takes bloody ages....

Jashans is not far behind, but if you factor in how nice the restaurant is inside and the outside eating area, Jashans wins by a nose......

Echo what others have said, its a great place & Riaz welcomes you warmly. I too would agree with the small portions of chutneys but you can always ask for more which we have done in the past.

Does Jashams have air conditrioning because I was there in October & it was so hot I kept having to go outside to cool down.

Good food, service. Was worried that when he moved from Endremit that it would not be the same but no worries there either.

I agree with your remarks about getting a verbal bashing on here as well, christ what is wrong with these ppl...maybe they are scared of running out of money and having to cut back on the booze

We have been coming on holiday to NC for the last ten years and have eaten @ Jashans in Edremit and in Karaoglanoglu, and have never got any complaints with the food and the service.

We are over in April and look forward to trying out Oleander for the first time, I am sure that it will be excellent as always.

Riaz keep up the good work and is the Happy Valley your restaurant as well or only the same owners name ??

Lived here many years and my partner is half Indian... although Jashans isn't exactly authentic Indian (little is in the Western world) it is still very, very good and by far the best in Northern Cyprus. The little one on the main road in Alsancak is also good... think it's called the taj mahal.

Keep clear of 'light of bengal'... not good in my experience!

Msg 84 you have to be kidding right. That has to rank as the worst place in the TRNC, 4 of us went there a couple of months ago, it wasnt busy we waited ages for our food and when it did arrive it was horrible..not one of us enjoyed it and we left most of it..I wouldnt set foot in their again..not even for a free meal ...YUK

Surely, if you have a bad experience you have the right to complain. How the complaint is done should be the question. If the complaint is put tastefully and in a pleasant manner, then what is there for any one to complain about how it has been done. If something is wrong then surely the owner, especially if he asks (as in this case), should be told what is wrong. If not, how can they ever improve on things.

I would like to point out that my complaint (MSG 4) was not after drinking the place dry and yes we did have a bad experience but since then we have been back many times. In fact during the summer we would eat there at least once a week and sometimes for Sunday lunch as well. So things had obviously improved on the unfortunate experience that we had on the first visit.

We've been to Jashan's several times and always enjoyed the food. But I would love to see Bombay Ducks and Brain Curry on the menu, surely it's not difficult to get sheep's brains here with all these sheep.

Hi Palacerclass , i do'nt necessarily agree with that . There are Italians ,Chinese and other races i dare say , who have a very respectable reputation for the cooking of Fish & Chips . They have sucessful businesses here in the uk as i'm sure else where as well

For what it is worth moderators should be allowed the same freedom of speech on this board as other members as long as they as well as other members post within the rules of the board.

If you think that AndyP has breached any of the board rules then I would only be too happy to discuss these issues with you via e-mail.

Simbas we are not talking about uk,we are talking north cyprus.Having lived here over 5 years its a small community here there is plenty of fish and chip shops aleady to go to,why add fish and chips.Jashans reputation is built on an indian resturant. The only thing when you add something completely different on offer,it may mean your struggling with your current menu.

Hi Palacerclass , yeh i know that it Jashans is in nc . perhaps i misinterpreted what you said " my advice is keep to your food only it does'nt mix " what i was trying to say was i think everybody has the potential of being able to cook good food from other than their own ethnic cuisine sucessfully . It does'nt always come across in the way one wants to say it on board

Been using Jashans & Oleander for a couple of years now & also The Grove which I believe Riaz or his relations own & last Wednesday we had a really good night at the grove where the food was excellant & the music equally so with Anna & a good night was had by all but was very surprised at the end of the night that there was not the usual free coffee or brandy offered & bearing in mind what our bill was We will not be returning to any of These establishments as its not the first time its happened in the last few months & it would seem that complacency is setting in !! Complacency has ruined many !!

why don't you ask before you order your meal if there is any freebies on offer after dinner and if they say no you can just get up and walk out.

you could actually make an evening of this going round and round different restaurant's asking the question?

I always thought the free coffee or brandy was at the owners discretion, didn't think it was a right, I certainly wouldn't discount a restaurant I liked just because I didn't get a freebie at the end of my meal, that would be like cutting your nose off to spite your face.

About Indian Restaurants and just for the record: mr. Riaz Jashan (Jashan's) has taken care of a minor problem in a most generous way. Excellent, Riaz! Thank you. Hans Doeleman

Never had a good meal at Jashans. Had a curry at Oleander b4 it shut and really enjoyed it. Staff were really attentive.

I make a lot of curries from scratch. Thinking of having a curry night up at our villa and maybe making curries to order for people to take home. If anyone is interested email me.

LaptaMike,

Jashans and Oleander were both Riaz's restaurants, both were managed the same way. We on the other hand never had a bad meal from any on them! And the punjab now is excellent as well.

We have been going to see Riaz at many of his restaurants for several years. Whenever our sons and daughter in law come to visit they always want to go there, often choose it for birthday celebrations.

We have always had a good meal and value for money, it's a matter of personal choice isn't it. I would never hesitate on recommending it to anyone. Keep up the good work Riaz.
